Trump Is Caving To China On Tariffs.

Trump's latest little rant n Canada. He really is an economic illiterate. What he is calling "Support" is actually called 'trade'. It's how importing and exporting works. No-one has any idea where he has pulled this 200 billion fromexcept maybe from out of his ass. Aside from oil, which Canada sells us cheaper than we'd get it anywhere else, Canada is a net importer from the USA.

"I put tariffs on Canada, they’re paying 25%" Trump is totally delusional. Somebody needs to sit him down and explain how tariffs work. If USA puts on a 25% tariff. Canada does not pay it. The US consumer does. And Canada imposes a cuntervailing tariff.

Car manufacturng is split across both sides of the border and if you look at finished product, USA takes 1.5 million vehicles from Canada and Canada takes 1.6 million from USA. Canada will end up manufacturing vehicles for themselves and not importig from the USA at all. All this is more of a lesson to diversify themselves away from reliance on the USA as a trading partner (and a strategic ally) for Canada.

And just yesterday Bessent was up in front of everyone calling for deeper collaboration and mutual respect. Sorry Bessent, before that happens someone is going to gave to duct tape Trump's mouth and take the pen away and we know that ain't happening. Maybe resign now and avoid being the one to take the fall for the Second Great Depression.

Trump's a fucking idiot, the new saying on the street is "it's time to move on". Referencing the feeling after you break up and realise there is no going back.

Fuck Trump. I want Carney tearing up NAFTA....Trump can start his negotiations from square one. This time, we don't leave lumber out....fucking US tariff was 14% now it's at 34%. So when you wonder why the price of new homes is climbing....remember Trump's favourite word..."tariffs".

Trump: all of these countries treat us so horribly

Also Trump: we hold all the cards

China says Trump lied about tariff talks.

Beijing said on Thursday that any claims of ongoing trade talks with Washington were “baseless”, a day after Donald Trump suggested there were active discussions with China about tariffs.

Asked on Wednesday if his administration was “actively” talking to China, the US president said: “Actively. Everything is active. Everybody wants to be a part of what we’re doing.”
Pushing back at these comments earlier today, He Yadong, a spokesperson for China’s ministry of commerce, said:

There are currently no economic and trade negotiations between China and the United States.
Any claims about progress in China-US economic and trade negotiations are baseless rumors without factual evidence.

China is happy to embarrass the Imbecile in Chief. 😆

It is totally unnecessary for China to hold early Tariff discussions with the USA. Tim Cook, the bosses of Ford, GM, John Deere, IH Case, and many others all recognize that their future is international and not stuck with Trump in the 1950's. The South and East Asian markets comprise 3.5 Billion people. The American market just 330 million people. BRICS is a bigger faster growing economy grouping than the G7 nations. China holds most of the cards. Emperor Xi will hold talks with his Asian neighbours first, and almost certainly the EU, before even considering any discussions with the USA. Trumps best contribution would be to just shut up.

The White House has put itself and the country in a bad situation but doesn’t realize it yet.

Around April 10th China to USA trade shut down.

It takes ~30 days for containers to go from China to LA.

45 to Houston by sea, 45 to Chicago by train.

55 to New York by sea.

That means that there are no economic effects of what was done on April 10th until about May 10th.

Around that time (it’s already started to happen) trucking work is going to dry up. Warehouses will start doing layoffs because no labor is needed to unload containers and some products will be out of stock, reducing the need for shipping labor.

All this will start in the Los Angeles area.

After about 2 weeks, it’ll start hitting Chicago and Houston.

Let’s say the White House, after 3 weeks, changes its mind, on May 31st.

“This isn’t working out like we thought it would. Tariffs back to 0.”

Let’s say China says “bygones be bygones, we’ll go back to how things were”.

Let’s say every factory in China that got screwed by their orders being cancelled says the same thing “no problem, we’ll make and ship”.

The problem is, even under the most favorable conditions of China and the factories restarting economic ties as though nothing happened, it will be at least another 30 days before economic activity is revived.

And that’s just in LA.

In Chicago/Houston, you’ll need to wait another 45 days.

New York, at that point, will still be getting containers from before April 10th, they will then have 50 days (May 31 minus April 10) of zero economic activity at the ports, in trucking of Chinese goods, in warehousing.

The whole situation is a bit like lockdowns. Once you shut down, it takes a long time to get economic activity back to where it was, if you ever can.

And again, this assumes, that China and its factories, which make things you can’t buy elsewhere, will start right back up again as though nothing happened, which is unlikely.

It’s almost like we’re speeding towards a brick wall but the driver of the car doesn’t see it yet.

By the time he does, it’ll be too late to hit the brakes.

Trump casually announced at a press conference this morning with the Prime Minister of Norway that discussions with the Chinese are underway.

You'd think that would cause a stock market boom right away, no?

No.
The Devil is in the details, of course. (And also in the White House, and in Tel Aviv, but I digress....)

Q: “China says it’s fake news that trade talks are happening.”
TRUMP: “Well, they had a meeting this morning.”
Q: “Who is ‘they’?”
TRUMP: “Doesn’t matter… We may reveal it later… As usual, you’re reporting wrong.”
*ENDS PRESS CONFERENCE*

Xi will talk to the SE and E Asian neighbour nations first, then expand to Korea, Japan and even India. In a reasonably short time he will engage with the BRICS nations, the EU and eventually if Trump behaves himself and shuts up, there might be some talks about talks. China will not engage with the US quickly, that would involve too much loss of face. Xi will take his time and wait for ordinary Americans to feel the pain. Eventually with USA consumers both Corporate and personal screaming for a result, Xi will cultivate the role of benevolent Uncle. Then negotiations might start but only when China wants to.

Heard it today spoken with a great deal of irony. China says Trump's claim that the two countries are working to quickly end the tariff war is, wait for it, FAKE NeWs.

Unbelievable! The Chinese are turning Trump's favorite words against him. :giggle:

LOL. I love it. Who says Winnie the Pooh has no sene of humor

And the order cancellations on US exports pile up.....slapping on tariffs is a two-way street

It amuses me that Trump whines about this. He's going to be whining louder than a Boeing engine firing up by mid-to-late June as the ramifications of his tariffs begin to strike home and the serious job losses begin to kick in. China has a lot more tolerance for the pain this is going to cause than Trump does.

Boeing has backlogs which they can likely redirect these too, but this will damage Boeing in the long term. What interests me though is how he thinks Boeing can default China? That's weird.

It sure seems like trump is deliberately fucking things up under the guise of America First nonsense. Is he going off Project 2025 script?

Wow. Trump’s interview in Time magazine is complete gibberish! They posted the full transcript, which is 100% rambling nonsense. It’s a must read.

“I’ve made 200 deals.” 😆

Your trade adviser, Peter Navarro, says 90 deals in 90 days is possible. We're now 13 days into the point from when you lifted the reciprocal, the discounted reciprocal tariffs. There's zero deals so far. Why is that?
No, there’s many deals.
When are they going to be announced?

You have to understand, I'm dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We're meeting with China. We're doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I've made all the deals.
Not one has been announced yet. When are you going to announce them?
I’ve made 200 deals.
You’ve made 200 deals?
100%.
Can you share with whom?
Because the deal is a deal that I choose. View it differently: We are a department store, and we set the price. I meet with the companies, and then I set a fair price, what I consider to be a fair price, and they can pay it, or they don't have to pay it. They don't have to do business with the United States, but I set a tariff on countries. Some have been horrible to us. Some have been okay. Nobody's been great. Nobody's been great. Everybody took advantage of us. What I'm doing is I will, at a certain point in the not too distant future, I will set a fair price of tariffs for different countries. These are countries—some of them have made hundreds of billions of dollars, and some of them have made just a lot of money. Very few of them have made nothing because the United States was being ripped off by every, almost every country in the world, in the entire world. So I will set a price, and when I set the price, and I will set it fairly according to the statistics, and according to everything else. For instance, do they have the VAT system in play? Do they charge us tariffs? How much are they charging us? How much have they been charging us? Many, many different factors, right. How are we being treated by that country? And then I will set a tariff. Are we paying for their military? You know, as an example, we have Korea. We pay billions of dollars for the military. Japan, billions for those and others. But that, I'm going to keep us a separate item, the paying of the military. Germany, we have 50,000 soldiers—

I’m just curious, why don’t you announce these deals that you’ve solidified?
I would say, over the next three to four weeks, and we're finished, by the way.
You’re finished?
We’ll be finished.

And ignored by China, Trump is falling bacl on another attack on Canada.

What part of "Canada doesn't give a fuck" has he failed to understand. Everyone I know in Canada (okay, that's a dozen people) is boycotting everything American. Canada is so done with us. They'll make nice, like Canadians do, and turn to the EU, China and elsewhere.

They are a resource-rich nation and there is a market for their resources elsewhere.

when there is no thought out plan or goal, anything and everything looks like a reasonable target. absolutely no substance in his commentary.

Nothing, and it's becoming obvious that the best thing to do is just ignore him and sit it out until the whole thing collapses. It's going to throw us all into a recession though, but these things are cyclic. We have corrections periodically, and they're needed as a corrective measure for economic excesses. The longer you postpone the reckoning, the worse the correction is.

Oh well. I have lots of rice and lentils in the basement. LOL.
