Something worth bearing in mind is that the taxes apply to imports, whether on components or finished product. There is no provision for those taxes to be reclaimed.

So if a company imports components from China and assembles a product to be exported (maybe back to China), the taxes are not reclaimed on export. The American company is stuck with them.

This is a direct attack on US industry, aimed at forcing manufacturing jobs to go overseas.

Yep. That thing with diamonds is a classic example. Those things move around and they are small air-freightable high-value shipments. And as the article said, 90% come from India as the finished product and 27% tariff. They ain't gonna be coming no more, and there goes 3000 jobs certifying the things.

I keep vacillating between Trump is a Manchuran Candidate paid by Putin (perhaps with Ukraine he is) or just too ignorant and stupid for words, and he believes his own bullshit. I'm opting for the second, and unfrtunately it will take crashing the US economy to convince his supporters otherwise. I have no idea how we will emerge from the other side of this. I can't see him being removed before the damage is done, and after it's done, who knows.....

Anecdotal fun fact: My partner's company has factories in China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Her clients include Walmart, Amazon, Auto Zone, etc. - heavy hitters.
Walmart told her yesterday that they will not purchase anything out of their China factory.
