Trump Cuts Off His Nose To Spite His Face

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

The Fake News hates me saying that they are the Enemy of the People only because they know it’s TRUE. I am providing a great service by explaining this to the American People. They purposely cause great division & distrust. They can also cause War! They are very dangerous & sick!

Some American media outlets are declaring they have had enough of the president's rhetoric — which they decry as dangerous — and are pushing back Thursday with an unprecedented and coordinated editorial campaign, led by The Boston Globe, which declares that "the dirty war on the free press must end."

The New York Times' editorial page editor, James Bennet, told his newspaper that "our publisher has put a stake in the ground on this issue, and at a time when newspapers around the country are under real commercial and political pressure, we think it's important to show solidarity.

Every participating newspaper in Thursday's campaign — which includes large and small newspapers across the political spectrum — will write its own editorial, not necessarily using the same rhetoric as the politically left-of-center Globe.

"f you're a true conservative, you're supposed to respect American institutions like the free press, the judiciary and law enforcement that have stood us so well over the centuries. And he's just tried to tear them down," Allan Lichtman, a professor of history at American University in Washington, told VOA. "And that really is, hopefully, not a new normal, but certainly something we haven't seen for some time in America."

A central pillar of President Trump’s politics is a sustained assault on the free press. Journalists are not classified as fellow Americans, but rather “The enemy of the people.” This relentless assault on the free press has dangerous consequences. We asked editorial boards from around the country – liberal and conservative, large and small – to join us today to address this fundamental threat in their own words.

"The press was to serve the governed, not the governors,” Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black wrote in 1971. Would that it were still the case. Today, the only media that Trump’s movement accepts as legitimate are those that unquestioningly advocate for its leader personally.

Indeed, it is not just that the president is stoking domestic division for political and personal gain, he’s asking his audiences to follow him into Fantasia. “Just stick with us, don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news,” he told an audience in Kansas last month. “Just remember, what you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.” George Orwell put it more gracefully in his novel “1984.” “The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

It is an essential endpoint to Trump’s deluge of dishonesty that he now contests objective reality and urges his supporters to do the same. In the first 558 days of his presidency, Trump made 4,229 false or misleading claims, according to a list compiled by The Washington Post. Yet among Trump supporters, only 17 percent think that the administration regularly makes false claims. “Alternative facts” have become de facto.

When the president himself repeatedly attacks the press in this way, it is no wonder that a nut like Alex Jones has escalated this attack to a call to arms.

It is unfathomable to me that most of the Republican leaders continue to stand by and shrug off or make excuses for Trump's behavior, while courting his support in the primary elections. They are deeply complicit in an extremely dangerous attack on the first Amendment.

Or are you bummed Pres Trump just doesnt take it like most GOP?

leftwing groups have also called for violence

When the president himself repeatedly attacks the press in this way, it is no wonder that a nut like Alex Jones has escalated this attack to a call to arms.

It is unfathomable to me that most of the Republican leaders continue to stand by and shrug off or make excuses for Trump's behavior, while courting his support in the primary elections. They are deeply complicit in an extremely dangerous attack on the first Amendment.

Are you another of those posters who support Trump only because it annoys people you don't like? Or do you honestly believe that a free press is dangerous to America?

In debates that took place after their books were written, Aldous Huxley insisted to George Orwell that at some point in history, people would willingly allow themselves to become cultish thought slaves because of the easily exploitable portions of the human brain and the general trend toward materialism and consumerism.

Orwell had always emphasized the physical coercion factor.

Neither what you quoted nor anything else posted here has related any of this to Hillary Clinton. So, your post just shows your juvenile bias and inability to be relevant to the issue being discussed.

Like Putin, or Stalin, Trump knows he doesn't need to convince his base that everything he says is true; just that everybody else is a liar, including the press that fact-checks him. Because when people believe that the real truth is unknowable, they grow cynical, and prefer to tune out and believe no one.

And so we have "the enemy of the people," a phrase straight out of George Orwell's dark imagination. But the real enemy of the people is never a free press, which holds the powerful accountable. It is a government that wants to be the sole arbiter of truth.

As the president plans a return to his Central Jersey golf club this weekend, an activist group is nearing completion of its herd of 'Baby Trump' balloons.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for Friday to Sunday, signaling the president will pay a visit to his Trump National Golf Club here.

We've received the first shipment of two and will be receiving four more by the end of the month," Girvan said, adding he plans on partnering with other organizations and lending the balloons out.

The two balloons, however, will not be flying this weekend, Girvan said. He said he expects them to take off at the end of August.

"I am looking forward to getting them out, not only in Bedminster, but across the country so we can start having rallies and actions prior to the midterm elections," Girvan said.

(Orange Cheeto-lini) started early on Saturday by whining that social media sites are “totally discriminating against Republican/Conservative voices.”

He also stated that “Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump Administration, we won’t let [the supposed discrimination] happen.” Which would seem to imply that Trump intends to press for some sort of law or regulation that would prevent sites for blocking hate speech and calls to violence.

Trump confirmed this impression in follow-up tweets. He first repeats his claims that CNN and MSNBC are “fake news,” but then brags about how he generously “do(es) not ask that their sick behavior be removed.” Having taken a bow for not completely eliminating the First Amendment by exerting government control over all public speech, Trump then … insists on government control over all public speech. In a statement that’s a fair Twitter match to his post-Charlottesville “good people on both sides” statement, Trump declared that “good and bad” voices are being removed from social media, and again suggested that he would somehow take control of the situation to force sites to stop removing hate speech and calls for violence.

"...the only person who benefits from a media environment where it’s impossible to tell the difference between the truth and lies is someone who lies all the time."
