Trolls

Question: I have a troll who constantly visits my stories, giving them low ratings and flaming comments. Don't get me wrong, I understand that my stories aren't for everybody, and that's cool. My feelings aren't hurt in the least bit that this person doesn't like my stories, but it's getting out of hand. I'm sick of having to constantly delete nasty comments left by said troll. Anyone have any suggestions?

Oh geez, I SOOOO wish I knew what to do to help you there cuz that's absolutely fucking infuriating. I just have a pet peeve about spineless people (ie. gossips, people who act big on the internet).

I'd recommend PMing Laurel or Manu to see if there's anything you can do, if no one else gives you a better suggestion. If all else fails, take out loan from bank, track down troll, and make troll soup?

You could leave your own public message at the end of the story 'outing' said troll. Wont stop troll from being active, but might make you feel better!

I'd say turn off public comments and accept email feedback. I get nailed for a lot of different reasons not related to my stories. Just don't put any stock in the ratings. All heated feedback is not bad. I started a thread in the AH about Feedback I'd like to share. If your story is good enough to get someone upset, then you did a great job. Most won't read through if they think your story suck.

Do you want to know what I like to do to trolls?

I click the mouse and open the folder where I keep my "special" application programs. I scroll down the list until I find the one I'm looking for: Revenge.exe

I activate it. The window pops open. The program springs into action.

"SEARCHING FOR IP ADDRESS..." the computer displays.

"IP ADDRESS FOUND"

"TRAPPING MAC ADDRESS..."

"USER IS ON-LINE... COMPUTER LOCATED"

Oh! "Mister Negative Feedback" is about to find out that he messed with the wrong guy! The specially designed virus I just launched against his computer is about to teach him a lesson he won't soon forget!

The greasy bastard is sitting in front of his computer in the dark. He is reading some sleazy i-Porn website. I can't tell exactly what it is but I can see that there are pictures of farm animals and body parts covered in excrement... Really sick and twisted stuff!

His screen blanks out and my face appears.

"I'll teach YOU, ya' freakin' TROLL!!"

He blacks out.

A few minutes later he wakes up. He is naked. He is strapped to a gurney. I am pushing him down a long, dark hallway. He can not escape. He tries to question me to find out what I'm going to do to him but I do not answer. I push him through a set of squeaky, double doors into a large, empty room.

Standing there, in the middle of the room is one of my most favorite fictional characters, Mistress Stephanie. She's wearing the same black leather outfit I always put her in when I write stories about her.

"My creator tells me you've been a bad boy!", she says to the troll.

She cracks her whip in mid air. The troll is too paralyzed with fear to move, much less protest. I give him a patronizing look and pat him on the top of his balding head. I blow a kiss to Mistress Stephanie. She smiles back at me. I walk out of the room.

As I walk back down the hallway, I hear the troll start to scream.

"That'll teach you!" I say over my shoulder. I walk back to reality and sit back down in front of my computer.

"CTRL-S" I type.

"Save As..."

I think for a moment.

"Troll Bait.doc"

I press return. I shut down the computer. I brush my teeth and go to bed, happy with the knowledge that I have vanquished another troll!

I had a story that I knew was going to get killed by critics, but I had to finish because I had so many requests from kind readers. I spent a lot of time making it the best I could, then I posted it (after getting it by a half-dozen prereaders who were all authors). Immediately I started getting really bad annonymous posts that didn't address the story, just said I sucked or lecturing me about how to get a high score (of course they all posted annonymousy).

I decided to see if any of the had any courage, so I turned off the annonymous voting, and low & behold . . . the only people who posted comments said positive or constructively negative things. No more flaming. I turned the Annonymous voting back on eventually, but the trolls went to find someone else to annoy. People shouldn't hide behind Annonymous to act like jerk-offs. It's one of the downsides to this site. But it also goes with the territory. You have to decide what you're willing to put up with.

Please don't get me started... I've had hell with one in particular today that condemned my newest story without even reading it... He/she/they/it do it to every story in the R/N/C catagory... STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!!!

Suggestion for trolls:

Send them my way. I like them. I collect them. I put them in little habitats and feed them ridiculous fanfiction drivel to keep them fat and happy.

Next time you have a troll, post a public comment in return : "I dare you to go tell FallingToFly" that kind of crap, Tinkernuts!"

I'll take them from there. As I said before.... I actually like trolls.

I used to be incensed by the old anonymous feedback. Now I just let it wash over. There are far more appreciative commenters out there than Trolly. This is a favourite of mine that I received, and I keep it up on the comments board for my own amusement. The poor sad bastard who posted it must have a shit life, whereas my life is pretty damn good.

If it's any consolation, I believe the good people that run the site make a sweep of all the stories at intervals & weed out those lonely ones left by trolls, if the overall scores are otherwise consistent fours & fives.
