Alright, I know as a writer who's gotten her share of both positive and negative feedback, as well as one who's been trolled, that I'm supposed to let the trolls' comments just roll off my back, and generally I'm pretty good about it. But GEEZ!!! OK, fine if someone thinks my writing is drivel or my words are trite. Whoopedy-doo if someone finds my sex unoriginally boring or outlandishly offensive. That's someone simply expressing their opinion about my writing in the (usually) anonymous troll-like way. However... I received feedback on my latest submission that was just mean and personal!
A lame assed story from a lame assed cunt and her faggotty [sic] boyfriend. Take this drivel and shove it up your fat, bead filled ass, along with your "black, strappy heels, you miserable, disease infested slut!

This is from another Litster - probably a Playgrounder - who's read mine and DJ's thread (he wrote a short involving beads). OK, the snide comments about me bug me, but the comment about DJ really burns me up!!! (And I know he'll be just the opposite.) It's personal AND chickenshit, because this individual doesn't have the balls to address it by name or publicly.

OK. I'm done with my rant.

I'm new to Lit, so I haven't been trolled too much. Well, I got this one in the mail

Your score is for interjecting politics into an erotic forum.

The Lit folks did their troll correction at one point, and the score jumped up a point and a half (about half the votes were troll votes) -- but it has been sliding back down. Of course, this piece also seems to be too subtle for a lot of Lit readers. I guess I misjudged my audience.

I got one that wasn't a troll vote, but the reader said he loved my story and gave me a 75% instead of 100%, because he wanted to see what I did with it next . . . except it was a one chapter story with no reason to continue. People never fail to amaze me. It's funny that some people will read your posts, then go flame one of your stories. I'm not sure I understand, but it is what it is. Just delete it if it bothers you, but don't change anything to suit an idiot. Even acknowledging him/her is giving them the attention they crave.

I got one today that said; "that was a good story, but I don't like gay sex action so I'm giving you a 4.00"

Ugh. I still remember that one story I wrote (my second one I think) got me a comment that used the "N" word.

ETA: Actually it was a long and poorly spelled email.

But the really strange thing was that there was no gay sex in the story. :p

Just remember that when ANYBODY slags someone off on a message board for ANY reason, the only reason they're doing it is because they know you can't do anything back to them. They're like the teenage boys on games forums that flame each other from the safety of their keyboard. If they were standing in front of you they wouldn't say a fucking word. You know it and what's more they know it. There's nothing smaller. Especially when it's just a pathetic personal attack and not an actual comment on your story as that one seems to be.

This is too funny! I just submitted a humorous piece where I mention the possibility of needing a support group or hotine for Lit writers...
Of course, it will take over a week to post right now, but hmmm.. I guess great minds think alike! LOL

I don't think the idea of anonymous feedback is a good idea. If someone wants to comment they should have the balls to do it signed in under their posting name. Anonymity brings out the worst in people.

Anon.

But the thing is, they could have several alts, or even one mean posting name. Either way, it's a fake name behind the posts.

Doesn't matter-- if it becomes obvious that one or three, or ten names regularly post trolling comments, it becomes easy to brush them off... And easier for the admins to track ISP's.

I have an aquaintence who posts her meaner comments under an alt. At this point most people know it's her, so it doesn't matter either way, but people do treat it like a seperate person. Even if you do it under your regular ID, it's not like you're signing your name and address to it. The only way it means anything is if you care about the stories you write, and use your name to make comments. Most of the really mean ones in LW aren't annonymous because the morons enjoy seeing people discuss their zingers (and those comments are rarely if ever made by serious writers).

That's right. It isn't a cure-all, but it does do something to curb casual nastiness.

He, he, but do you really have black, strappy heels?

The best way to deal with this is to try to imagine this guy as he wrote that, imagine how fucked up his life must be to try to get enjoyment form writting that. Is he really talking about his wife or girlfriend? Maybe his daughter or mother? Did he ejaculate on his keyboard with his final exclamation mark?

That always helps me.

Also, some of what I consider to be the most positive feedback, without specifics of course, is "read your story, wanna cybersex?"

It wasn't a public comment (I don't have those turned on); it was done by email. After forwarding it to Jim, I deleted it. I don't like keeping negative mess in my box.
