Trashing a CPU, how?

Take your hard drive and hold it close to a big magnet... We had one of those suckers at work to wipe out video tapes.

Won't work -- a degausser used to erase video tapes isn't strong enough to get through the shielding of a harddrive's case. Disassembling a harddrive and degausing each individual platter would work, but if you're going to that much trouble it's easier just to mangle the platters and dispose of the pieces in widely separated locations.
