Topics for weekly discussions

I'm still not clear on this.

who's the committee or persons who picks this topic of the week? Are they appointed? And by whom? Are there term limits? Or does it change weekly and new people get to pick?

 someone is picking what we get to discuss?

That's my question, yes. Why are would we be posting topic of the week suggestions if someone is not going to pick it?

But as usual, my questions will be ignored... except by you. ;-)

Still working out a way to work this part of the plan.

well, since we now have two mods who don't like me or my posts... I'm guessing that any of my ideas for topic discussion will never fly.

Are you going to appoint a committee or board of directors to decide this?

My suggestion would be to let FungiUg pick the first topic. And then he passes the pick for the next week along to someone else who is active on the suggestion thread. Then that person picks, and passes to someone for the next week.

hey...can we start our own thread hijacking committee...and maybe give classes on how to hijack? :) Hmmm they might move a "How to hijack a thread" thread to the how to forum. we would have to falsely name the thread to throw em off...

I am going to assume this is humour as I support your posts often and openly. Add to that I am not someone who as a moderator or person favours anyone, friend or otherwise, nor do I expect Marquis will as a moderator either.

That seems a good plan which would work the easiest and smoothest. Thought briefly of having a majority vote from those wanting to participate or have a deciding factor, but can see that may create problems though maybe not insurmountable once we get sorted out and in some pattern/rythme. I have been busy with other things so haven't had time to think too much on it or discuss with Fungi, but will.

LOL I want to be part of that commitee! :nana:

I have to say this because its starting to annoy me now. Unless i am misunderstanding what is being said here im reading this as "we will choose the discussions on this forum, and you will post to them" uhmmmm at the top of my screen it still says freedom of speech and i think trying to control the direction the board takes is BS.

I could be wrong, but the idea I got was to make sure there was a new discussion once a week. I think they were trying to think of a way to liven up the talk. But you don't have to post to it, or anything like that. It's just so that at least once aweek we have something new to talk about.

It's not about controlling the board. People are free to start 193,393 other discussions a day if they wish and never even open the thread we are discussing.

Umm... I think maybe this was intended not to replace the current format, but in addition to the threads that the forum members would normally open or contribute to. Sort of a "Let's keep going with what we have, plus have a Topic of the Week selected from suggestions from the members to look at and discuss in depth" thing.

I'm not sure a "Topic of the Week" is really necessary, since most posters here tend to bring up and discuss whatever interests them to the extent of their knowledge, passion or curiosity on each particular topic... but I don't foresee it stifling input or the creation of new threads. If it does, I would hope that it would be dropped quickly into the barrel of "Well, it seemed like a good idea" oblivion. I certainly would not want to see any evidence that it decreases the number of threads created and discussed to the extent that members want to discuss them. If that were to occur, I would be one of the first to suggest that the experiment be dropped.

My point is this, if you have interest in a topic you can click on start a new thread and begin discussing it without needing permission or approval from anyone. Why not pick threads that ppl have already started and make them the hot topic of the week based on the replies or create a thread to vote for the hot topic of the week and pick which should be voted on by the amount of replies and or views.

I think the idea of having a Topic of the Week is excellent (in addition to any other threads members want to bring up, of course)! Many interesting subjects for discussion have been mentioned. I also like the idea of the rotation of who chooses the topic. In spite of the fact that many/most/all of these topics will have been discussed before, it invites new conversation and communication on the board. Isn't that why everybody's here? :)

I think this weeks topic should be how to determine the weekly topics.

If you turn it into a contest you aren't going to get the same level of participation from those who voted for the losing topics. And do you count the number of people who replied, or the total replies?

Use the KISS system.

Have we ever gotten into it before?

That was my understanding as well. I have never known Fungi to try and stifle the number of discussions, or the diversity of topics....usually fairly easy going and comments if he has a point to add or not if it doesn't interest him at that point....or as is often the case with most of us, if he is busy with life. I actually saw it as a huge positive in that it was an addition to the usual number of threads, and a scheduled thread per week so even in those slower times (Christmas etc.) there is hopefully something happening. It often happens also that people like time to think about a topic and then comment and as Fungi suggested, this gives that opportunity without fearing by the time they get back to it most will have commented and moved on. It also helps with the problem some have expressed in the past that they want to start a thread but at that point in time are in a topic drought, or for some, don't feel confident opening a thread of their own choice. Is like most things IMO, will need time to settle and have the wrinkles ironed out through experimentation and trial. and hey, Fungi has been absent too much these past months so perhaps this will give us a guarantee of him dropping in more often!! :D

I second this one!! Specifically how to and what some find the *most* humiliating. I'd like some new ideas everything now and then. And I certainly wouldn't mind sharing some of my own ideas. ;)
