Lord of the rings is full of troll types. The film is winning everything and Ian McKellern - the lead actor - has just been on BBC saying that New Zealand - where it was filmed is the best place on earth.

It's an excellent film made from an excellent book. It deserves every award it gets. Brilliant acting and special affects. Filmed in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I havn't seen the movie, but the books were among the finest examples of literature I have ever read. Don't blame Tolkien if you have a problem with the movie, he's dead and had nothing to do with it.

I've no problem with Tolkein - or the book. In fact, I had dinner with him once and he signed a copy for a girl-friend - whom I have lost touch with. That was in 1972. She was really erotic and a good writer too. Wonder what happened to her.

No the thread is a compliment to New Zealand but I expect they're all asleep there just now.

Nah, the kiwis aren't all asleep. There's a few of them hanging around here somewhere. Mad as hatters, the lot of 'em!

:D

Jeez, must have been nice, I wish I could have met him.
My grandfather knew him (or says so, anyway, I wonder sometimes), and he gave me a bunch of old framed prints by Tolkien, as well as original editions of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, both signed. (And written on some weird paper, I don't dare read the things for fear of wrecking the pages, I had to go out and buy some new edition versions to read)

I only met him because he came to dine at my college - his brother was a Catholic priest in Stoke on Trent - both very humble types.

As for cherrylips - any advice on the best way to eat a kiwi?

With lots of tongue action.

:D

At least that's what I've been told by the kiwis.

As one of LITS (crazy) Kiwis I accept your compliments on behalf of the 3.8 million other (more normal) New Zealanders. The movie was filmed in various locations spread throughout the country, the majority of it, the hills and mountain scenes being filmed around the Queenstown/Arrowtown area. Yes, it is true, we are lucky and blessed to be living in Gods Own little corner of paradise.

I have to differ on one point tho. I think that Elijah Wood is the Lead Actor. Frodo is the main character, not Gandalf

I stand corrected on the lead actor bit. As I say, I am quite ignorant about the book and the film.

As a Scot I'm also sorry about New Zealand's recent cricket results.

Well, the series is tied 2-2 with the deciding game today (Tuesday) in a good scotish city , Dunedin. Hopefully we can pull off the series win. If we dont, well never mind. Its been good exciting cricket and theres a test series to go yet, so we maybe able to salvage some pride. Can I ask you to translate your sig line? I'm dying to know what it says.

Representing one of the 3.8 million normal kiwis, I say kia ora. Hello from the land of the long white cloud, fresh air, honey and green green grass. :)

Who can answer this simple Lord-of-the-rings trivia:

What is the continuing line to the song sung by pippin in bree that begins "We are the boys from down on the farm.." ;)

Here's hoping that LOTR cleans up at the oscars. I agree that the movie deserves every award it gets, and probably will not get all the awards it deserves.

But I am a big Tolkien fan, so I might be a little biased.

Now if only we could get PJ to do a movie on the Silmarillion and the heroic events of the first age. That would be something!

Your nearly encouraging me to read The Lord of the Rings. Actually, I do admit to listening to its radio adaptation.

For Draco, the sig. is about "saying all those little things which are not worth saying, but really deserve to be heard."

No doubt I'll catch the cricket when I waken up tomorrow - "the early bird catches the cricket" - an old Scottish saying.

There's nothing terribly erotic about the Hobbits - or is there something I've missed?
