Today vs. History

For an aspiring researcher in the hard sciences, I believe there is no better time than now. There are probably no great surprises to be found in the body of scientific information of the past. And the pace of investigation and innovation as so accelerated that one could become disoriented even slightly into the future. There are great things to come this century, and I feel so fortunate to have been born when I was, to be able to witness them.

Yet you used your uninformed, low information right to vote, to put in office the biggest threat to the efforts and sacrifices of your ancestors in our history. Get a clue.
She voted for Bush?

Exactly. It's funny that I keep seeing people that write books like "The End of Science" that claims that new lands are diminishing not just in square mileage, but in returns.

I think it's a common theme in the unimaginative, and I feel sorry for them.

For me, this is awesome. There is just so much to do and so much to see.

And anyone who still has a mind to can do what's necessary to travel to those far off lands. It's a shame Americans don't travel abroad at the same rates as Europeans, and commune with those in say the outer villages. We could do so much to combat the Ugly American stereotype. When I traveled abroad I traveled alone, and followed the most conservative advice to maximize my safety in a developing nation. But I realized, this time laying over seats at the Seoul airport like an uncultured American, that I could become addicted to international travel, and on my next excursions should do what I could to integrate.

I think like you say there's a misperception science discovery is coming to an end. The science has become so abstruse and specialized it's easy for the lay person to feel disconnected. When someone thinks about evolution, probably they are wanting to know how one species, one kindom leads to another. Probably they are thinking about abiogenesis. An answer involving genotype frequencies is not satisfying. Similarly for physics. They want to hear about cosmogenesis and where humanity belongs in the grand scope of being, not the peculiars of Higgs coupling and inertial mass. But it's a real problem for science advocates if their science becomes too far removed from society and loses its value. It's a special problem for foundational physics, which is struggling to make genuine theoretical advances.

I'm all for travel, but I've traveled mostly in the U.S. because I would like to get to know my own country, and it's wonderful.

I don't really care much about stereotypes because the only people who deal in them are wrong on both sides, being one or picking on one.

Development of computers was essentially creation of an entirely new realm of experience (yes, okay, a lot of it is porn, but...) and wasn't predictable. That's what's interesting about reading history or living it. I may not be the one to make the breakthrough, but I can predict with fairly decent accuracy that they will happen and that they're happening now faster than in previous history.

We need some level of breakthrough on energy management to develop the facilities that are created to test underlying tenets of physics. So that will happen, but right now the costs are prohibitive. We'll get over it. We've got a problem, enough smart people are frustrated by it, we find a solution. Maybe not soon, and can't predict when, but that's the way history progresses.

The prurient interests were always there with us since the days of stone tablets and scroll parchments. Generational tech leaps just helped make it more accessible, which has shaped its creation and content. Call it Dirty Design Within Reach. ;)

I bet ukiyo-e prints were like the adult image Tumblrs of their day.

It is my contention that TODAY...is a great day. Not for each individual alive right now and their particular circumstances, but for the statistical gains that we've made in culture, in science, in medicine, in art.

The liberals and post-modern apologists seem to have gotten a tweet this week telling them to spew the "world is better than its ever been (and of course its because of us)" crock this week. Third time I've seen it on various sites.

Um, sorry, but things are basically over for humanity. At least in the western world. Maybe a grand coalition of China-Russia-Islamic World can someday overrun the west and save human civilization from degenerate cultural barbarism and societal decay but at this point but I think even that may be impossible. It may be too late to save humans from reverting to a cultureless pre-animal level.

In art???????????

Seriously, of all the cultural degeneration post-modern art is the most obvious pile of crap of all. If I was to give one area where humanity has degenerated the absolute MOST I would point to art, not just paintings and sculpture (which is crap) but in music, tv/movies, architecture, etc. Its all become the most vile and horrifying garbage. It really should be called "anti-art." That what the modern art movement was really trying to do, create art that actually destroys art. Like the guy, Duchamps I think (have to look it up), who signed his name to a toilet and said that made it "art" was really trying to do. Destroy art by making a mockery of it.

You're either no longer hiding from your performance artistry, or you've become a bitter, curmudgeonly recluse in old age. Usually I lean towards performance art, but sometimes you hit the paleo-con philosophy so squarely I'm forced to second guess. Either way, you're a one man institution. Bravo!

Human life is effectively over. Liberalism has destroyed all that was good or provided purpose or meaning in life.

Once the demonic force finally succeeds in eliminating "gender," we will even sink below the animal level.

I think the more simulation material is available, the better. Real Dolls? Great! Porn? Sure. Video games? Definitely. Gives people the chance to do what they want to do without having to find another human being who may not be into being stored in a closet, objectified or killed.

I also think ibuprofen is a huge deal. Think of all the low-grade anger and pain that's not inflicted on others because it's not there.

That's so sweet. You think I'm part of some political organization intending to make your life miserable.

Things are over for you, but that's not all of us.

And a political organization didn't do this to you. You did. So I'm guilt free.

You are clearly someone who is an excellent judge of beauty and what it takes to create it and promote it in the world.

Look it up.

Oh, stop it.

Do us a favor. Next time you're jerking off to Limbaugh, make sure there's a noose involved.

I'm a huge fan of Shark Week. That's art. And definitely performance art when some dude is in a shark cage and a 30 ton female pregnant shark has its way with the cage.

Go shark!

We have more spare time, more access to materials and training and exposure to different methods.

Art is more accessible. So some of it sucks, it always has. Move on to the next piece, you won't be able to get to all of it in a lifetime.
