 Yikes! Brits, we need that scuba gear we loaned you. Also the big boats.....

Floods, heat plague parts of U.S.

FINDLAY, OHIO — Residents hoped to return to their water-soaked homes Thursday after heavy downpours brought the city's deepest flood waters in nearly 100 years.

Governor Ted Strickland has declared states of emergency in several northern Ohio counties, where flooding forced at least 500 people to flee their homes and was blamed for at least one death....In Findlay, firefighters and a volunteer armada navigated boats through streets awash in waist-deep water Wednesday, plucking neighbours and their pets from porches. Many rescuers showed up with canoes and kayaks wanting to help....

The Blanchard River was two metres above flood stage Wednesday at Findlay, the highest level it has reached since a 1913 flood, the National Weather Service said....It said small streams and creeks had begun to recede, but Findlay Mayor Tony Iriti said the earliest residents will likely be allowed back to look at the damage will be Thursday afternoon.....

Flooding also continued in northern Iowa as thunderstorms dumped more heavy rain across the already water-logged region Wednesday. Three subdivisions along the Des Moines River near Fort Dodge were evacuated, and crews used rocks and sandbags to shore up a levee that had begun to give way, officials said.....

Thousands of homes were damaged in Wisconsin and Minnesota as the storm swept through. A preliminary survey by the American Red Cross in Minnesota identified about 4,200 affected homes, including 256 complete losses, 338 with major damage and 475 that are still inaccessible, said Kris Eide, the state's director of homeland security and emergency management....

Meanwhile, a storm packing heavy rain, winds and lightening battered northern Illinois...The National Weather Service said about a 130 to 190 millimetres of rain fell across Chicago and surrounding towns, and winds reached more than 80 kilometres an hour in parts of the city. The storm was moving eastward toward Indiana....In Oklahoma, which recorded a gust of 132 km/h and 280 millimetres of rain, some 300 homes and businesses were damaged in the Kingfisher area and in Caddo County in southwestern Oklahoma, officials said. According to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, 2007 is so far the fourth-wettest on record in the state, with an average rainfall total of 812 millimetres, more than 200 millimetres above normal.
So, I'm seeing all these AH folk on rafts, still typing away at their computers. Chime in folks and let us know you're okay...or in need of rescue. Cat's got his scuba gear on and he'll come and get ya!

We're fine. It's dry as a bone here in southern Illinois, which is good considering I can't swim. There have been several heat related deaths in the area, though and it's terrible. But, don't worry about me, I've got ice cubes down my blouse.

I'm waiting for other countries to offer Disaster Relief. I won't hold my breath.
Uganda sent the UK disaster relief in the early 1970's when we were entrenched in the 'three-day-week'. We've never forgotten, we've never forgiven.

Commiserations to all those suffering wet or warm, UK is unremittingly damp and grey in our corner.

Dear Mr. Chernoff,

I would like to inform you of a disaster that is happing right now and has for the past few days. The middle of the United States is currently inundated with torrectial rains and flooding. Lives have been lost and property damage is uncountable.

Please, if it wouldn't be too much of an inconveince in your busy schedule lying to congress and avoiding responsibility for everything hat occurs on earth, inform FEMA that they have an important job to do in the midwest.

Also, if it wouldn't be too much stress on you and your more important work, we, Americans, would appreceiate it if you would make, at least, a tiny effort to avoid another Katrina-like performance.

Thanks you,

J Jackson.

You forget, Jenny...you're a black "slut." No one's going to listen to you ;)

The entire state of Ohio is not drowning, you'll be glad to know. Only parts of it. I do need rescued though, from boredom and complacency. And the heat and humidity. I'm also having a drink or 5 or 6. Anyone care to join me?

Can we still bring the scuba gear?

Indiana is mixed right now. Some flooded areas, some not. My area is not too bad, a county over though it's very rough. It takes folks a couple years to get the financial assistance they're promised. *sigh*

Hey, your letter must've got his ass in gear, cause I saw him on NBC Nightly News and it looked like he was actually in the midwest.

I do not want my sister to go back to TN. :( I heard there were 50 heat related deaths in the U.S. this past week and the majority were in TN.

I think it's supposed to cool down a bit over the weekend. :)
