Hi Naughtygirl

I generally don't give advice on things because I've never stopped smoking myself and people don't listen to me for some reason anyway.....but I found that slowing down during sex helps some....

I quit 10 years ago this July, but I used the patch. Afraid I don't have much to say other than to encourage you and others who are trying to quit.

Some things that helped me:

1. Change habits. For example, I was so used to having a cig with my morning coffee, I thought I would have to quit drinking coffee! Turned out, I just put my make up on and did my hair while drinking coffee. After eating, I never stayed at the table - always got up and did something like dishes or even going for a walk.

2. Environment. Turn your home into a "non-smoking zone" if you haven't already done so. Stay away from people when they are smoking. When eating out, always ask to be seated in the non-smoking section. (Something we don't have to worry about here in California - every place is non-smoking)

3. The 3 day rule. The average person can quit if they can steer clear of cigerattes for 3 days.

4. Think of benefits. Your dental hygienist won't have to work so hard getting all that tar off your teeth. People will actually be ableto smell your perfume and not your addiction. That person sitting next to you won't have to hold their breath. Your lungs return to their normal, healthy, pink state in about 10 years. (okay, maybe that seems long, but it is a benefit!) Within a relatively short time, you will find you breath easier. You will get over colds more quickly. You will truly be able to enjoy your food as your sense of taste returns.

5. Support. Tell the people around you that you are quitting and need support. Don't be afraid to ask for it. If you need to have a hissy fit because of the addiction, find a friend who is sympathetic and won't mind you bagging on him/her.

6. Seek out help. There is help out there, if you ask for it. Call the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association. Both organizations have free literature along with tips and ideas of how to quit smoking. Be certain to tell them you are pregnant and if there are any medical concerns. They can provide you with a lot of information and it's usually free. Also, your doctor should be able to offer you help in this. Doctors are typcially very aware of products or tips or other helps to get patients to stop smoking. Check your local hospitals. Many have free seminars on how to quit smoking, and you might meet other people in real life who can be a network of support as you all quit.

You can do it. I've known more people who have quit smoking in the past 10 years than have taken it up. Once you get to the point where you no longer have to dish out that kind of cash, fuss with lighters and/or matches, worry about where you can smoke and where you can't, and not having to deal with people looking at you as though you were a lower life form, you will find that living smoke-free is better. Far better.

And the biggest thing? Make this a life-long thing. Don't quit just because you are having a baby and it's a medical necessity. Quit for a lifetime. You can do this.

Good luck!

Thank you SexyChele...great tips. I have already started quite a few of them, over the last 2 weeks I have started to change habits and my house is a "non-smoking" zone. I dont smoke in the car anymore, thats a big one for me too.

Thanks again!

Hey NG....been there and did that! I quit 5 years ago and never looked back....I smoked all day one day on a long drive from upstate NY to home near Philly....then got home and put them away. About a week later I got a phone call from a friend who was in Med school who told me that it's only the first 2 weeks that are the physical addiction...after that it's all in your head. That was all I needed to hear...I was halfway home....and no one could ever make me do something I didn't want to do, and I just made up my mind I didn't want to smoke anymore....

Not that it's any advice on HOW to quit, but maybe it will help in some small way...hope so....good luck darlin!

I can't believe the price on those damn things! They were only $1.75 a pack when I quit!

Keep us posted on how you're doin, and ya know everyone on here will be your sponser when you feel like lighting up!

Yes, thats what I heard. although hearing 2 weeks is discouraging...I keep reminding myself that 3 days isnt too long to get through, but thinking of 2 weeks is a bitch! (excuse my bluntness.)

But what is keeping me focused is the health of my baby. So whether its 2 weeks or 3 days, no matter...I JUST NEED TO QUIT completely.

I have had 5 cigarettes so far total today. I have been averaging that. Just having a hard time giving those last few ones up.

Thank you Muffin for the encouragement!!!! :)

You can do it girl, I know you can! When I was quitting, I used to go around smelling everyone else's...believe it or not, it actually helped.....I think because each day that I went without them I realized how bad they smelled....I know their a bitch, but cold turkey is really the only way...everything else is just another crutch! You'll be fine...wait till you finally stop....you'll be able to smell them on everyone...I can smell someone smoking sitting at a traffic light in the car in front of me......I swear!

I'm heading to bed....I'll check in with ya tomorrow...stay strong, for the baby AND for yourself!

Try making those last 5 a day hard to get to.

1. Don't keep them near you.

2. Don't keep them all in one place.

3. Make them hard to get to by putting them in places that you have to walk to or open multible items to get one.

4. Let everyone know your trying to quit and have them distract you when you go after one.

5. When you feel the craving for one make yourself wait another half hour before you go to get it. Many cravings die in half an hour.

6. EAt when you get a craving but eat things like carrot sticks or apples. Any fruit or veggie that crunches and needs lots of chewing.

7. Look for the things that trigger your cravings. Like one with your morning coffee or one after dinner, and exchange rutines until you break that habbit. Such as one with morning coffe, fine have a cup of tea. Still good caffene but fixed different and tastes different. Breaks the rutine.

There are a lot of things that can be done and not all of them have to be big things. Many times it's the little things that matter.

I gave up smoking just over 20 years ago. At the time I was smoking almost 5 packs a day. I quit cold turkey and may I say it was the hardest thing I've ever done. And there's no telling how long the craving will last. Different people have different reactions. It may only be a day and it may be weeks to get past them or anything inbetween. Just hang in there and don't give up hope. You will win this one because there is more then yourself counting on you.

I can too... I can smell the cigarette in the traffic... I start to look around, it can be the car behind me... this is no shit... Cigarettes were $1.76 for a pack of 25s when I stopped... that was in NSW Australia in 1985.

Oh good, I thought it was just me! I can smell them in traffic too...they truly STINK! WOW 25 in a pack...damn, they didn't want to get people hooked or anything tho right? I remember my dad telling me when he was in the service, they used to come around and hand out free cigarettes to everyone, whether you smoked or not...knowing that if you smoked once, they had you!

Thank you very much for the info, Miles! I will check that out today!

Today, armed with a bag full of peppermint sticks, I go cold turkey (again). I have appreciated all the support, encouragement and words of wisdom from y'all. :rose:

OMG SD - that's what my brain looked like too...wowowow....quitting smoking is hard but you seem to have the incentive to do it...and we are all behind you.

this might help....

I quit on January 1st, this year...at 11:36 pm...LOL I remember exactly! I cut up drinking straws the same size as a ciggie..and just packed them around with me everywhere! this helped greatly with the hand to mouth habit. I do feel so much better now...I still miss it, but I know I can live with them. GOOD LUCK!

LOL @ Studdog :D

I have been smoke free for 14 hours and 29 minutes. :D:D:D:D:D and I keep thinking how amazing that is for me considering I have been awake the whole time. :D :D :D

The ticker on silkquit.org really is helping. Everytime I think I want a cigarette, I think about how I have to start the ticker again. and being the type of personality I am, I don't wanna start over, I just want to add more time. Who would have known! Thanks again Miles!!!!!

I have had cravings all day, but I feel strangely calm. Its hard to explain. It just feels like Im going to do it, you know?
