tips for post-drinking morning

Hi everyone,
So last night I went with friends to a bar. I ended up having two ohranj cosmos, a gin martini, a tequila shot and a mojito and a shot of Baileys. At the time they all tasted great (except the gin martini)....

BUT this morning, I'm not feeling so hot. I'm not sick nor am I full out hungover. Just very tired, slightly queasy and a general feeling of "ugh"-ness.

Any suggestions on how to make this all better?

thanks,
d.g.

PS Since I'm going to work now, I'll most likely on see this after work, apologies for no posts until tonight... :) thanks!

drink loads of water. as much as you can find. alcohol is a diuretic, which means that you experience all the wonderful effects of dehydration.

please note that caffeine is also a diuretic, so that morning cup of joe isn't your friend today.

i'd recommend getting some food in your stomach as well. maybe a bagel.

How to get back your balance after alcohol indulgence...

Yep, fluids are necessary, and while that warning about coffee is valid that doesn't mean you can't have any, particularly if it's part of your normal day, just that you need to be sure to balance it with water or juice(s).

Getting some solid food in you is a good idea, too. Since your system's a little out of balance I'd suggest bananas (for the potassium) and then moving on to something spicy, like mexican food, to throw a little kick into your metabolism. A walk to get your blood circulating...

A long steamy hot shower can't hurt, either.

another vote for carbs and fluids... water or good sports drinks... and just time to let your body regulate.

sucks though, doesn't it. sorry you have to cope with it.

Waters definitely the way to go whilst your drinking alcohol.....for years I've always drank water throughout the course of an evening in addition to the copious amounts of alcohol consumed - I'm Scottish what can I say !! - and for the most part it helps.

One of the girls at work who likes a drink on a night out was always complaining that she was always ill the following day, last night out we had we got her drinking half pints of water with every alcoholic drink...next day she felt great and no being sick...more than could be said of the two girls she was sharing a room with that night *lol8

When you are feeling like shit the next day I agree with a previous poster, a combination of a nice hot shower and actually going out and getting some frash air definitely helps but I think when you get to that stage it's different strokes for different folks, everyone will swear something or other works for them.

I've also toyed sometimes with the supplements you get when you've had the runs, replaces vital body salts etc...can't swear it's helped any more than simple water though.

The non fun alternative I guess is to abstain but thats anathema to us Scots....apart from the puritans amongst us that is !!

My foolproof cure, counterintuitive as it sounds, is to eat something healthy but with a bit of fat or grease in it, like a hamburger with everything on it. Regarding the potassium thing, you need something significant in your stomach to get the juices working again. A banana and bagel alone aren't going to cut it. Maybe add some scrambled eggs and fried potatoes if you can't handle a hamburger with everything on it. But the greasy food thing works like a charm every time. That is, when I was drinking like a fish ... don't do it anymore. :D

Take a b-complex supplement for an energy boost. And as much water as you can handle. And some fresh air. You'll be right as rain in a day or so.

thanks everyone for your suggestions! I drank tons of water all day, had cereal for breakfast with some advil, and was back to normal by lunchtime. I guess it's getting through the first four-six hours of ickiness thats the hard part :)

On a side note, next time, I do plan on trying to drink tons more water along with my mixed drinks.

thanks again,
d.g.

I also suggest eating a bunch of carbs right when you get home- like pasta or popcorn. That's if you're not too drunk or already too queasy. I'm not sure why it works, but it works for me and the people I was informed by!

Good Luck next time!

have a glass of chocolate milk before passing out...always works for me
You don't think that's what's making you pass out, do you? I mean, if it's the last thing you drink and all you gotta be at least a little suspicious, eh?

A recomendation from me...

Try to drink 2(or more) glasses of water prior to passing out. I know i've had trouble doing it before, as i've been too drunk to remember :D . Anywho, i've noticed that anytime i drink 2 or more I feel 1000% better the next day. Also, if you have multivitamins, the B-12 helps you too.

Another thing that i'll try to do is have a water after every couple drinks while I'm out. Hydrating myself while dehydrating myself. I've had numerous friends give me hell for drinking water while out, but i tell them to shove it and then buy me a drink. :D

Best of luck to you. The best cure is prevention.

everybody already mentioned most of the important factors. Water/rehydration and eating. Simple breads are good such as toast or a bagle. These will help absorb and digest toxins and chemicals left in your stomach the next morning. Also cardio excercise (whatever you can handle) is great for making you feel better. Hangover's are caused mainly from dehydration, elevated blood pressure, and elevated blood toxicity. Water helps dehydration, an anti-inflamatorry such as Advil can help with the blood pressure, and sweating can help clear out toxins in the blood (hence why people usually smell like the alcohol they drank the day before).

Glass of water before bed can help alot. While drinking water as you drink alcohol is good, most will get pee'd out whereas a tall glass of water before bed will help you through the sleep and waking. Still, both helps the most. Ibuprofin, Nsaid, or Tylenol, can help before you go to bed too. taking 1 or 2 small doses (pills) can make your next morning alot easier to deal with.

While all these things help the day after, the damage has already been done, but they still help speed up your recovery. No such thing as a magic bullet formula for the next day as like I said, the damage has been done. Time and proper treatment the next day heals all.

Taking tylenol is NOT recommended for those that drink alchohol. Especially after binging.

"Severe hepatotoxicity may occur after ingestion of as little as 4 g (8 extra-strength caplets) in 24 hours when combined with alcohol."

Motrin isn't really recommended either.

uhm

NO, not good either

it's best to avoid OTC meds all together if you've been binge drinking

Bayer is hard on the stomach lining, as is alcohol, could lead to ulcers and such if done on a regular basis
