our cable system has something called music choice... kind of like satellite radio for your tv, except there aren't any talk channels. which is fine with me. it doesn't matter if they're left or to the right, I don't care what any of those people have to say. I wanna rock! but I digress...
while the songs are playing, they show pictures of the artists and post little "fun facts" about them. it came in handy when I was doing the trivia all the time, because it helped give me ideas for questions. for some reason, tho, they never have any info about the band rush. when they play a rush song, they show pictures of the band, but they only have fun facts about general music stuff. "avedis zildjian was an alchemist in the ottoman empire and created his first cymbals in 1623." that kinda stuff. but I digress again...
so I turned on the classic rock channel today and they were playing we will rock you/we are the champions by queen. one of my all-time favorites, so of course I had to stop and listen. and one of the "fun" facts was "freddie mercury of queen died of AIDS-related bronchopneumonia in 1991."
1991? it hasn't been that long, has it? that can't be right. but it is. it's been 19 years since freddie died. wow. then I checked some facts. stevie ray vaughan died in 1990. bon scott died in 1980, for god's sake.
do I have a point? probably not. just the musings of a bored old man on a cold winter's night. probably spurred in part by the general dread and humbuggery I feel this time of year and partly by the death of chris henry of the bengals...
time marches on. some of us get old. we all die. it's that time of year when the pop culture machine pays tribute to the artists/celebrities that have passed this past year. if I have a point, maybe it's just that in this time of remembrance it might be nice to spare a moment for some of the people who have gone before.
who do you want to remember? I'll go with freddie.
my melancholy blues
