I recently changed doctors and the new one told me that apparently my uterus was tilted backwards instead of forwards. While that may not be totally uncommon she told me that in some cases it might cause problems, especially during pregnancy. Anyone who knows more about this??

I have a titled one .. to the back ... the only time it ever was a bother .. was having an IUD placed in ... I would not recommend it! The pain ... holy friggin cow!! (And, thanks to my positioning, the thing didn't even go in properly). (it's out now!!)

Anyways .. that's my dealings with mine. So far so good with everything else though.

I would really research this prior to getting opinions here. 9 times out of 10 everything will be okay and your pregnancy would go smoothly but there is still that 1 chance. It is highly rare but your uterus could stay in it's position and not revert. Meaning, not move into the abdominal cavity as it should. Then it would have to be reverted another way. If it isn't in the position that it needs to be during a certain stage of pregnancy, the pregnancy would abort and if it didn't abort, there is a chance that the uterus could rupture and other things.

Even though this having a retroverted uterus is common, there is still a chance that an issue could surface. Again this is rare but it is a possibility ....

Being totally honest here, my doc told me my uterus was tilted to the left and that it was normal.

Still sometimes I have pelvic pain on the left side.

and sometimes during vaginal sex.

I have this and it wasn't any big deal for me in terms of getting pregnant, carrying babies, or having an IUD inserted. It's important to remember that the vast majority of women who have a retroverted uterus don't even know about it and do just fine. It's like being left handed. That having been said, it's helpful to let your doctor know if you're having any gynecological procedure. Other than that, don't worry until you're told it's an actual problem.

I have this. My first pregnancy went perfect. My second one had some complications..I had a low lying placenta. BUT I was told that was not related to my uterus at all.

So from my experience...It didn't really cause me any worries.

My uterus is retroverted. I had two normal pregnancies and both children were delivered vaginally. I did have some trouble becoming pregnant however, so I tried lying for a while after sex with a pillow under my hips (to let the sperm run up and backwards). That worked within six months :)

Thanks for all the great replies and sharing your experiences!

I didn't think too much of it when my doc told me and assured me it wasn't a big deal and that a lot of women had this...but then I read some articles on the subject and got worried.

I've never had any problems so far; no special pain during my period, excessive bleeding, or pain during vaginal intercourse ( though for some reason doggy seems to be just a tad more comfortable) but the thing with the not-rightening-possibility during pregnancy really had me scared. I'm not pregnant at the moment and don't plan to become pregnant in the near future but it's still good to know that other women with tilted uteri didn't seem to have had issues in that department.

Thanks again fo putting my mind at ease :rose:

My cousin has a tilted uterus and has had 4 healthy babies.

I have a heartshaped, or bicornuate uterus, which the two halves of the uterus did not fuse completely making it two-halves, in stead of one. So chances are that I'll have trouble carrying a pregnancy to full term. This is the condition when they often stitch the cervix closed. Having said that - there is always the chance that everything will go fine!

Awesome response!!!

Another place for great information is on http://www.obgyn.net. They have a Women's Health Forum where you can post questions to MDs. Great source of information. The address for the forum is http://forums.obgyn.net/womens-health

I am guessing that your new doctor is not an OB-GYN specialist.

A retroverted uterus is a normal variation of the position of the uterus and has no bearing on the ability to get pregnant. During pregnancy, the retroverted uterus enlarges and moves into the abdominal cavity normally and it there is no longer any "tilt" to it.

The uterus can be in any one 3 positions, tilted forward, completely straight or tilted backwards. These are all variations of normal, just like some people have eyes set closer together than others. Most women have a uterus that is tilted more forward.

It used to be thought that there was an association between a "tilted" uterus and infertility but that has been proven to be untrue.

Some women have endometriosis which may pull the uterus into a backwards tilt and in a case like this, it is the endometriosis that may cause fertility issues. Endometriosis usually causes very severe menstrual cramping and other problems.

If you are not having any problems, don't give it another thought (or worry) and chalk it up to an old-tyme doctor but you should see an OB-GYN specialist if you have concerns.

Hope that helps!

I recently got told the same thing. I have had three children. No trouble falling pregnant, no problems during pregnancy, no problems during birth and no problems since. (the youngest is now 8)

I have the same pecularity and I was told that although uncommon, there was nothing bad about it...

position discomfort?

My wife has always told me her uteris is tilted and that certain positions were uncomfortable during sex. One in particular is doggie if her chest is on the mattress. She is OK on all fours but with her ass way up she doesn't like the angle. Anyone else have this problem? She had our two kids with no problems.

My uterus was tilted as well, and doggie style was and still is my favorite, but I enjoy some pain with my sex. So yes, being tilted can cause discomfort in some angles.

I also didn't have trouble getting pregnant, but STAYING pregnant was a problem for me. After two healthy babies I found out I had cancer of the uterus. Not that it had anything to do with the tilting, it's just a coincidence as far as it goes.

Now that I no longer have a uterus, I miss the pain!
