Avaline ~ cloudy paradise

Avaline stirred from her Zues induced slumber. She had known that he had weaved a healing magic over her and that she know awoke fully recharged and ready to partake in her job of watching the others.

She waved into the air, a silent greeting to Zues, and Hetta, knowing they were both watching her. Zues came down to her side, and smiled softly.

"Fully recovered are you?"

"Yes, thank you. They tend to run a person ragged you know."

He laughed, and then sat down on one of the clouds he called forth. She took her place by him, and stirred her finger into the cloudy mass below him. Soon the earth appeared and they watched in silence as Lily greeted her brother Jake.

"You think she'll try and bring Jake and Michiko together?" Zues asked, with a smirk on his face.

Rolling her eyes, she smiled, "You know that isn't the plan."

"I know, but they don't know that."

He smiled, and disappeared leaving Avaline to watch and wait. She watched Lily and Jake, then she watched the group of travelers making their way across war torn Germany. Sighing she watched the rest of the players move slowly toward their goals.

Her eyes only seeing the wind and snow of Greenland, unable to see Richard, Wyn or Scytherin in their quests. Zues still hiding that from her. "Please let him be okay, please let him prove his love for me, and not...." She rubbed the tears from her eyes, and sighed. Avaline would know if he was changing, she'd feel it. She returned to other things that needed her care, and she descended to earth to ease the suffering of the lost infants that had not yet found homes. Her mind never far from her charges.

Michiko couldn't help but notice the hand on her shoulder, looking down at it and then Lily, smiling. She watched Lily walk out and then went about dressing. She put on the jeans and shirt, looking down at her bare feet with a frown. Once she was done, she came out to see what was going on. Lily's brother then got to see the cherry blossom, herself. She brushed a stray lock of hair out of her face and bowed her head, "Hello, Sir."

She noticed a mirror in the room, looking in it and staring. A blush came to her cheeks as she admired herself. These clothes seemed to fit her, and the tight fabric hugged her body in all the right ways. She heard a growl, trying to find the source of it, which led her to her tummy. She then rubbed her stomach, looking to Lily, "Is there more food?"

Lily giggled at the beautiful woman asking for more food. "This way both of you." She looped her arm into her brother's and hauled him to the table. "Jake, meet Michiko, and Michiko this is Jake."

She nooked the food, warming it to the proper temperature, and brought out the jug of milk, and orange juice, before sitting down and eating with the other two. "Jake is my twin brother, the one the Goddess found me as my "perfect" mate."

"Well, I am perfect," Jake said as he winked at his sister and took in the lovely woman that was now his favorite peice in the room to look at.

"Michiko is from Japan, the year 1877, and she's a Samurai," Lily smiled at her guest, and the crack of thunder filled the air.

"Japan, cool," Jake replied, as he downed some juice. "Sis did you sleep alone last night?"

"Huh?"

Jake looked at Michiko, "She is scared of thunderstorms."

"I slept alone, and rather well thank you." She hadn't even worried about the storm, perhaps she had been to tired, from traveling, or it was the orgasm she brought herself to, or it was the fact that there was someone in her apartment with her. She hated being alone. Whatever it was Lily was grateful for it.

"Michiko needs some clothes, and I so, don't want to stay home in the apartment, rain won't kill us. If Michiko is up for it, will you drive us to the mall? I want to take her to Victoria Secrets."

"Shit, I'll carry her to Victoria's in a blizzard!" Jake grinned, and imagined the Japanese girl in the skimpy numbers, that he fantasized about on his numerous conquests.

Lily rolled her eyes, and swallowed her milk. "Michiko, would you like to check out the city?" She was surprised at how she really wanted Michiko to enjoy her visit in the city, perhaps she was on her own quests, and fixing her and her brother up would be an idea job for her. Surely she could do it better then Avaline.

She moved from her chair, and stood behind Michiko's back, her chin propped on the woman's shoulder, "What do you think?" her breath caressed Michiko's ear, "Want to hang out with me today, try on a few naughty things, and make my brother drool?"

Michiko ate quietly, listening to both of them speak. She didn't really offer any input, mostly because she didn't have a clue what they were talking about half the time. This Victoria's place must have been special if Lily's brother was willing to take her there through a blizzard, though she knew it was an attempt to boast about himself. She smiled, this Jake seemed to like her, as did Lily.

She wasn't entirely sure what she was supposed to do, the ask given her was very daunting. A soulmate could be anyone, anywhere, and, from what she had discovered, anytime. But she would do her best to find Lily someone she could be truelly happy with. To be honest, she had been unable to keep her eyes off Lily, she was beautiful Michiko felt the stirrings of interest in her. She wasn't sure if it was just the case of nymphomania she seemed to have or if it was something more, but she decided not to dwell on it.

It was then that her train of though was broken by Lily's head resting on her shoulder. She looked at her and smiled, nodding, "Yes, that sounds enjoyable," She would by lying to herself if she said she didn't want to go. The chance to see Lily in these 'naughty things' seemed irresisteble, and she'd probably find herself drooling alongside Jake.

Lily squeezed Michiko's shoulders, and then moved around, gathering the used dishes, and headed back to the kitchen. Soon she was back with the other two, and her eyes were moving between Michiko and Jake. Sighing she wondered if her brother found the woman more interesting then the woman found him. "Well, I think we are ready to go."

She grabbed her purse then stopped. "Shit, you'll need shoes." She looked around, and dug under her couch, and pulled out a sneaker. Then she ran into other rooms, and soon had its mate, and gave them both to Michiko. "Hmmmm... we'll get your own shoes too." She grabbed another pair of shoes, and showed Michiko how to put those on as well. "If I'm right, you would be a sandles kinda gal, in Japan, but these are ten times nicer!"

Lily stood up and waited for her brother, and Michiko to accompany her to the door. "Jake will be driving us, and though it will seem very odd, it will be safe. I'll sit in the back seat with you, and if you want feel free to hold onto me. I've been in your shoes," she laughed at the pun, "before, and I know your probably a little scared."

Eddie and Raven in Wichita

Eddie didn't figure it out at first. The words were jumbled in his head, and the speech had this odd familiarity to it, that sent a chill up his spine, but it wasn't until Eddie saw the other look at the waitress that it all came together to him.

She was a lesbian. The word new and foreign in this age. Of course she wasn't from this time frame. She was way ahead of her time, accepting love from another woman instead of another man. Most people in this day and age wouldn't respect it, or understand it. He was from the big city though, and had seen those understanding couples himself.

"I know what you mean," He gave Raven a wink, holding her hand in his own. Her goddess, the other waitress. They would need a really good present for a lover, a perfect lover.

"All right. Do you know what your "goddess" likes? Any interests or anything? Anything we can use for a good gift... maybe a porcelain doll or some kind?"

Lily, Jake, Michiko - 2005

Michiko put the shoes on, feeling rather comfortable in them. She gave them a workout, walking around in them for a moment before nodding and following Lily and Jake outside. She could only stare at what she saw: buildings. Big, big, buildings that reached up towards the sky. She moved close to Lily, looking back and forth with wide eyes, part of it fear, the other wonder.

When they stopped, she was looking at what appeared to be some form of horseless carriage. Lily got in in the back seat and Michiko sat down next to her. She waited for Jake to get the horses, but instead he got in himself. She leaned over and looked to see what he was doing, a little peice of metal sticking behind some sort of wheel. Then the metallic contraption roared to life and Michiko, the brave samurai, grabbed tight to Lily and didn't let go.

She was pressed close to the rather lovely woman, blushing and looking up into her eyes, "What.. what's going on? Why is this moving without any horses?" She looked out the window, seeing the speed they were going at, and she closed her eyes, resting her head on Lily, "I've never seen anything like this! Is this some sort of magic? How can all these carriages move without horses?"

It seemed that she held herself close to Lily for some time before they stopped. She shakily got out when Jake and Lily did, looking at the building they began to walk towards. It was big, though not as tall as the others, it was very wide. She hurried to catch up with them, "Does Victoria live here?"

Lily stopped and looked at Michiko. "I'm sorry. I didn't explain the car ride very well." She touched Michiko's cheek, and caressed it softly, then smoothed back her hair. "That was a car ride. Jake drives a bit to fast, but those are cars." She pointed to the smaller of the vehicles, "those are trucks, and those are motorcycles, very dangerous, but ohhhh my God they are fun!!"

Looping her arm through Michiko's, she walked beside her. Lily dismissed the feelings she was finding as she pressed closer to the woman, perhaps this was her missing half, her best friend. She hadn't had a woman as a close friend, since her one friend when she was younger, having a friend to share secrets with would be nice.

Jake walked behind the two women, and admired how well, Michiko filled in the jeans she was wearing. He pictured the Japanese girl naked, and felt his jeans tighten, "Ummm... Victoria's right?"

"Yes, dear... to answer your question, Victoria Secrets is a shop, a store where we going to make Jake drool!"

They walked through the mall, and paused every once in a while to show Michiko the sites as well as answer questions. Soon they were inside the store, and Jake was holding things up for the women to try on. Lily pointed out the manniquins to Michiko and explained what everything was.

Michiko found herself in a dressing room with Lily, having asked Lily to stay close, for both their safety. She was staring at herself in the mirror, dressed in a black henna corset. Samurai didn't wear lingerie, and they didn't cling to women because they were scared of a car.

The next outfit was a pair, matching ruffled black thong and panties. She had never worn a thong before, and she couldn't believe how small it was! "Ok.. Well we need to find someplace warm, but maybe this will help some." Taking Raymond's and Aidan's hands once more within my own. Concentrating upon drawing the warmth through my own body. Feeling the warmth spreading slowly from the bottom of my feet through my legs warming me up until I feel the warmth leaving my clasped hands. Into the mens hands, adding warmth for us.

When I feel that I have expended enough warmth I drop my hands looking about us once more. "Well that should help with that for a few minutes, but we really need to be moving. Lets see what do I remember about the history of this place and time.."

Looking about us once more I notice the what I had thought was empty streets really weren't. The people were just hiding within the trash and debries laying about. Pointing out the people to Raymond and Aidan, moving towards a smaller group. We needed clothing and perhaps these people could help us, if we didn't scare them half to death first.

Well so far this was going quite well...he seemed to understand and be okay with what I was telling him...as farfetched as it was...and the smile and wink affirmed that he understood it all very clearly.

Holding his hand he seemed like such a nice guy...I cant understand why I would need to find out if he had true character....it seemed like he did. Maybe there was a mistake in what they had told her...shrugging it off she smiled back at him.

"Well as for the gift...I mean she is a 'Goddess'...I mean she can have anything she wants and desires...I am really not sure what she likes or what would be suitable for a gift to present to her...a porcelain doll just does't seem right somehow...it has to be like...really, really good...you know?"

"Is there anything like really great that is available at the moment..something so very special or unique?"

"Thank you so much in agreeing to help me with this...you just don't know what this means to me...alot truly."

Lily turned around, from her corner of the dressing room, and looked at Michiko. For a moment she just stared, then her voice came back to her. "Stunning," she whispered, and found herself blushing. She wasn't supposed to be the one enjoying this, Jake was, but of course he couldn't come in here with them. But still, she tried to move around Michiko, and bumped into her.

She dressed back into her regular clothes after putting the undergarments in a bag, heading back out.

They paid for the lingerie and after a bit more shopping, Michiko decided the best thing to do was confront Lily, "Lily? Could you help me find the.. bathroom?" Lily would walk her to it and then Michiko would lean in, looking at her and whispering, "Are you attracted to me, Lily? Please, be honest," She smiled disarmingly, resting a hand on the woman's arm.

She wasn't entirely sure how she would react to either answer. If Lily wasn't attracted to her, she would leave it at that, and do her best not to seem so forward. If she was? Well, Michiko would do whatever Lily asked, even if she didn't want to explore the feelings any further. She had to laugh in her thoughts though, was she making these women attracted to her? Or was she just in the right places at the right time?

Lily blushed profusely, "Michiko, I'm not really ready to answer that. Your a beautiful woman, and any man, or woman would be happy to, well... be attracted to you." "Michiko, let's go back out there and get you a few more things... shoes, and clothes that you will like. I really am not ready to discuss this with you. We just met, and well... I have only been with a woman once, and I'm just coming out of a broken engagement, the third in three years, and ... " Lily sighed, "we just need to go."

She pulled the bathroom doors open, and headed back to her brother. Lily hadn't meant to let her feelings show, and now Michiko was probably disgusted with her, and she had probably lost a good friend.

"Oh, don't worry," Eddie said, as soon as she smiled at him. Eddie bit his own lip, unable to see that sparkle in her eye. She was absolutely beautiful, especially with that smile.

"I'm here to help," The other waitress was helping the only other couple here in the room. She was young, with short blonde hair, and deep green eyes. No wonder Raven liked her so much. If she wasn't taken, Eddie would probably want her for himself.

"Does she know anything about this yet?" Eddie asked, turning back to Raven, "Have you told her, or are you just going to surprise her with a gift? Do you know anything about her? The more we know of this Goddess, the more we can dsign a gift for her. Like, if you know something she doesn't have, or something she really desires. That would be a great place to start."

Michiko understood completely. Lady Achika went through the same thing when she lost her husband, she felt obligated to find a new man to take care of her, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. She frowned, watching Lily's hurt and pain. And when she left the bathroom, Michiko hurried after her. She rested a hand on her shoulder, turning her around and giving her a hug.

She pat her back, completely platonic about it, "Don't worry, it was wrong of me to be so forward. I will be the best friend I can be, Lily," She pulled back, smiling at Lily before hooking her arm around her's. Walking with her back toward Jake, "Where are we shopping now?"

Wyn was grateful for Richards’s warmth and the blanket he draped over them leaning back against him she relaxed, letting him help her work the circulation back into her body, and smiled as Scytherin joined them by the fire.

All three of them gathering warmth from the flames. Your welcome Richard.. I am glad you’re both here too. If it weren’t for the two of you I would probably be a frozen statue by now. she said.

Looking into the flames Wyn enjoyed the feel of Richards hands gliding over her body and breasts, a shiver went thru her body this one not due to the cold, as her nipples hardened hidden under the blanket, Wyn new it wasn’t the time or the place for them to do much more than that though. Looking at Richard and Sytherin her eyes reflecting the fear she felt flow thru her body she stood ignoring the cold and begin checking the robe she was wearing.

I lost it. I can’t believe I lost it, the broach the goddess gave me it was my only way home. Where did I loose it the only place I’ve been was home and then here. she said looking at the others she sat back down curling up in Richards arms for warmth a worried frown creasing her brow.

Lily smiled at Michiko, and tried to ignore the heat of her skin, next to her own. She knew deep down she wanted Michiko to be her friend, to be something more, she wouldn't make her friend try something like that. Not everyone was okay with that, and she didn't think it was right for her to try and make Michiko think that it was something she should consider. Lily herself hadn't considered it until Michiko. She knew this wasn't normal, and she was going to do all she could to find her soul mate with Michiko's help.

"Shoes and clothes, Saks!"

"Oh fuck," Jake muttered. "I hope you brought enough plastic to pay their prices."

"I'm teasing, Jake," Lily shot back at her brother.

"Hey Lily! Jake!"

Lily stopped, and removed her arm from Michiko's. She smiled, and introduced Michiko to the man that had called out her and her brother's name. "Michiko this is William, or Bill... whatever you want to call him."

"Bill," Jake nodded then looked over at the man Bill was walking with. "Tim," he nodded his head stiffly.

Lily didn't like Tim, there was just something about him, she never cared for. "Michiko, this is Tim."

"We're on our way to Sears, see you all later," she grabbed Michiko's hand and tried to hurry away, "Tim's an ass, but Bill's sweet." She stopped again when she heard, "Hold up we'll come along." She sighed and rolled her eyes to the beautiful lit ceiling. "Great," she muttered.

Richard is no longer alone... Wyn is with him, in Greenland

"Oh, hun. It's ok..." Richard curled up with her. He had to get out of his own robes, naked with her under the covers. They had no useful clothing, and the robes were soaked with snow melting, it would be no use to wear them. Warm skin ran along warm skin, and Richard could not help but nuzzled up next to her.

How long has he been without a good woman to cuddle with? Avy? No, she didn't count. She was a whore. A loving whore that gave him a wonderful fuck, but nothing more. He had not laid with a girl like this, stroking her cheek gently, presshing his body into hers in years. He missed it, he needed it, his body craved for the attention.

Richard kissed her forehead, soft and warm. So close to a woman, smelling her, taking her in. It overloaded his senses.

The people let them stay, and gave them food. There were new clothes too, once they were ready to move around once more. All of them furs, mostly seal or sea lion. The blanket that Richard covered himself and Wyn with were the same material. These people lived by the sea, that much was apparent, and with a monster cutting off their only supply of food and survival, these people were powerless.

Richard called out to the man he thought was the chief, and asked him to explain further.

"What is the monster, where did it come from? What does it look like, and most importantly, where can I find it?"

He was positive this was the monster he had to defeat. Best to get it overwith, before the three of them froze to death.

Michiko would wait until a better time to talk with Lily, now was their chance to shop. They went all over the mall, shoe stores, clothing stores, etc, etc. She found a nice pair of sandles as well. She liked the shoes, but she preferred her older footwear, even if these weren't exactly the same. She even went back to Victoria's Secret to get an outfit that she had seen: chantilly lace brazilian panties, a chantilly lace demi bra, and a black lace jacket.

She promised that she'd pay Lily back though, if she could. After that, they headed about. She went into some of the weirder stores, intrigued by everything. She looked like a child in RadioShack, all wide eyed and amazed by it all. She had never seen a T.V., CD Players, or the like, and it probably confused Lily. Michiko would have been frightened by all of this, if it hadn't been for Lily, staying close by.

Lily continued to hold Michiko's hand, she had become quite comfortable with it, in hers. A few people had stared and commented, and will Tim had made some offhanded comment, Jake had told him to pipe down.

Jake had watched the two women interact, and now he wondered if he had missed the problem of Lily not meeting her soul mate all along. He never thought about Lily wanting to be with anyone other then a man, but it may have been the missing link in her chain.

He wondered about that now, as he walked behind the two women with Bill and Tim. "Hey, guys let's head over to the diner then the bar." He called out to Lily, and Michiko.

Lily gave him the thumbs up, and she and Michiko climbed into the backseat of the car. Tim and Bill told them they'd meet at the bar later, but not the diner. Lily rolled her eyes at the idea of spending more time near Tim.

Before long, the two women, and Jake were walking into the mom and pop joint, and sitting at a checkered table cloth. Jake had taken it upon himself to sit across from Lily, and Michiko, allowing the two women to sit beside each other in the booth.

When Lily gave Michiko the menu and described for her the various foods, she blushed at the electrical shock her fingers recieved when the touched Michiko's. "Choose whatever you want, and if you have any questions. just ask."

Looking at Eddie with his dark eyes and most killer smile, Raven couldn't take her eyes off of him. She forgot about her lemonaide ...her newly acquired job....her surroundings for that matter. His wavy dark hair and broad shoulders ....she sighed within herself...hoping it was not too obvious to Eddie what she thought...much less felt.

"Well...she is a goddess as I said and she is most beautiful...yet she has many faces to her...like they all do I am sure....ummm...as for what she likes or doesn't have....she can and probably does have everything she could ever want and if she doesn't nothing could stop her from getting it I am sure. Her desires...wow....I really dont know that much about her ...she is mysterious and intelligent , cunning, yet kind and generous...loving....helpful and if need be ....she can be downright ruthless and nasty as well."

Pausing for a moment she broke her gaze from his eyes and looked down noticing that she was still holding his hand...hers looking so small amid his. But it felt very nice and....safe.

Suddenly she senses tension...looking at Eddie she knows it isn't coming from him...she looks towards the kitchen and the front counter and sees the Darlene and the boss looking her direction...yup...thats where it is coming from...closing her eyes for a moment she hears and feels their thoughts....oh great they want to can her already she has taken too long on her break...slipping her hand out of Eddie's...she whispers to him ..."I have to go....wait for me okay?"

Needing to soothe these two so that she can aleast find a place to stay and have a little money in order to find this gift for the goddess and to be able to live for a while ....she walks sheepishly towards the counter.

"I am so sorry...I never meant to over step my break time,....I was only asking that nice young man if he knew of any places to stay that were reasonable and close by...."

She sends her thoughts of desperation and hopelessness and her situation to the two before her and thinking of her sisters...brings a glassy sheen to her eyes as tears brim in her eyes and threaten to fall at any moment. She knew it was not very nice ...but...she may end up working till dark and would Edddie wait that long...I mean how much lemonaide could he hold or take in one day....it was worth a shot as sneaky as it was.

It worked...Darlene cooed over her patting her hand and the boos came up to her and smiled and softened a bit and told her ...to see if the nice young man could help and to take the rest of the day off , as long as she came back in tomorrow to continue. And offered additional help if they were unsuccessful in finding a place for her for the night...as was nodded in agreement by Darlene.

"Sweetie if you haven't found anything by tonight...you just come to this address and I will be more than happy to let you stay as long as you need to okay?"

She handed Raven a slip of paper with her address and phone number on it and turning to the boss and whispering the two of them handed her some money folded up and closing her hand around it ..saying to her..."Dont you worry sweetie...we have all been there and know what it is like...you take care and we will see you later."

Raven removed her apron and followed Darlene to the back to get her little bundle of things. She gave them both Darlene and the Boss man a hug and walked back to Eddie. Smiling brightly at him...she said in a low voice...just for him to hear....
"Let's get out of here before they change their minds."

Monster Mash

Zues looked down at the ice capped landscape of Greenland, the creature slept soundly in the caves of Pardonia. He sighed then looked to Hetta, "It's not time yet."

Hetta agreed concerned etched her face, and she looked over to the place where Avaline was working. "I know..."

Zues had been about to awaken the beast, and allow it to become the next creature on Richard's quest to immortality. Now, as he watched all the lives unfold beneath him, he felt a weight on his shoulders.

"Why would he wish to..." Zues knew, and he looked over to Avaline as well. "I will miss her smile."

Hetta opened the books of life, and made the first letter of the fair Goddesses name. The Silver "A" glistened in the light, and she knew when she looked at Avaline's face, that Avaline had felt the draw of the name upon her immortal soul.

Zues watched as something that he could only describe as shock crossed Avaline's face. Zues felt anger replace his disappointment, and turned to the creature he had allowed to rest.

With the raising of his staff, he summened the beast, and he watched it rise in fury. The creature stood 12 feet tall, and his body was as white as the snow that incased the land. His body was thick with muscle, and his teeth were sharp and pointed. His eyes were the color of the bluest parts of the ocean, and his fur covered body was speckled with the fresh patches of blood, from previous kills, and caked with the hard specks of kills from long ago.

Zues turned his back to Richard, and cast a protective shield around the villagers, Wyn, and Sytherin. "I'm sorry Avaline," he whispered, as he saw Hetta close the book on the first letter that had been scribbed in several thousand years.

"Now what?" she asked her husband.

He lifted his hand, and waved her away. His mind conjuring up images of the smiling face of Avaline.

Lily, Michiko, and Jake - 2005

Michiko had enjoyed her time with Lily at the mall, holding her hand tight. She felt strange, awkward even, in this position. Michiko was a warrior, a skilled swordswoman, who now felt like a mere novice with Lily nearby. She was in a time that had all but forgotten about her way of life, and she would have to learn to adapt to this new place if she was going to help Lily. Lily was helping her do that.

When they were looking in the menu, a shaky breath escaped Michiko's lips when they're hands touched. It was different from holding her hand, it was a brush, a soft gliding across the skin. She smiled, her hand resting on Lily's and giving it a soft squeeze. When Lily looked at her, Michiko smiled, but there was something in her eyes, a knowing look, but an understanding one. It wasn't condescending or fearful, they both felt the electricity run through them at those faint touches.

And she then turned back to the menu, "I'll.. have a.. what is this again," Pointing to a picture and waiting for Lily's answer before responding, "A Cheeseburger and.. umm.." She thought back to what Lily had called them eariler, "Fries!" She smiled back at that Lily, that sweet Lily before resting her hand on her's, her fingers slipping between Lily's, intertwining.

Eddie and Raven

"Ok," Eddie said, as soon as he got outside. He swept Raven up in his arms, and gave her a wonderful smile, "This is excellent. I think we are on track. Now, I need you to do something for me. We need a base of operations. A motel, hotel, something that is big enough for two... if not three of us. Just in case someone wants to have a little privacy, you know what I mean?"

With a little luck he could get these two lovebirds together in one night. It would all depend on the other waitress. Raven looked more than ready herself.

"Get anything you think we need. I'll stick around here and do a little research. I'll meet you over at that general store in about an hour, ok? We have a plan, we're about to find our gift, and by tonight, I think that little Goddess of yours is going to be very happy."

Eddie gave her a warm kiss, affectionate and friendly. He could not help but linger though. The feel of a woman in his arms, her warm lips, her deep taste. It gave him absolute confidence, and he knew he lingered too long.
