Throw away your Oil of Olay

Heard on the radio this morning that an exhaustive scientific study found that couples who have sex at least 3 times a week, on average look 10 years younger than those who have sex twice a week or less.

Damn, why couldn't I have participated in that research?

This smells of poor study analysis to me.

Several years ago, there was a study published by some British researchers who compared life span in 2 groups of men: those who had frequent, regular sex and those who did not (I don't remember the specific frequencies they used to put men in one group or another.)

The data showed that men who had regular sex lived longer than men who did not. Of course, the media jumped all over this and the results were widely published.

Upon closer scrutiny, however, someone pointed out that the two groups weren't only different in the frequency of sex. The researchers failed to consider more fundamental issues that might cause men to both have less sex and live shorter. For instance, men with clinical depression both have less sex and live longer than men that don't. But this in no way means that the sex is responsible for men living longer. This is what is called a "confound" because it causes us to question whether or not the results of study are actually meaningful.

To get back to the study bring up, I suspect couples that have more sex may be healthier mentally and physically than those who have it less frequently (and that is what's responsible for them taking better care of themselves). Of course, I have no data to prove that, but you should always cast a skeptical eye at science.

That's the great thing about science. It doesn't even trust itself.

Yes, it certainly could! And you're absolutely right that we don't know which is cause and which is effect.

And that's precisely why the results of such a study are confounded. We simply can't figure out what conclusions we may safely draw from the data.

Studies like this are the worst kind, because they lend a false sense of understanding. We tend have great faith in science, and believe it's conclusions. But all science is not created equal. It's up to skeptical minds to continuously question.

Whispersecret: Judging subjective appearance here would certainly be problematic. Another potential problem with the study.

And what about the problem of ethnic/racial differences?
Aren't Asian women supposed to have especially young-looking skin?
