Got me thinking more about the Beauty and Beast fairy tale...
Though Beast was "hideous" (or in some versions just animalistic), he was obviously not without means. He was a provider and a protector. How much unsightliness can a princess stand or trade for the intellect and security?

What if he had lived in a cave...?

He would have been ridiculed and belittled and certainly in no position to find "his" beauty.

But was he hideous in fact ? or not fitting of the norm for the period, a social recluse rather than deformed beast.
