I'm kind of conflicted. The vast majority of us probably have nothing to fear, yet we don't like Big Brother watching our every move. Same with cell phone pings.

And yet:

"According to the charging document, a license plate-reading device located near the synagogue recorded a vehicle shortly before the crime occurred and again minutes afterward.

Law enforcement located the vehicle on Tuesday in the city of Clifton, which is located just northwest of Newark, with the hooded sweatshirt consistent with the one observed in video of the crime spotted on the front seat along with what appeared to be "white cloth items" and "bottles of unidentified liquids," according to the charging document.

A search warrant was executed on the vehicle Wednesday, with law enforcement recovering the sweatshirt, white gloves and a mask."

If it is located on public property, like the thousands of other surveillance cameras and instruments, there's nothing you can do about it except complain to your local authorities. As in public spaces, one has no legal expectation of privacy, at least in the US.

i have no problem with this information being collected. It's a tradeoff: it can be used for good and doesn't make a snatch of difference to our daily lives so long as we're not under investigation for stuff... it can even be used as evidence to validate innocence by supporting an alibi. Of course, as with anything, there's the potential for misuse and it's the spark of plenty of films/novels, but in reality, no-one really gives a shit where you are unless there's a need. It can even help locate you if you are missing or in a dangerous situation.

They’re used on toll roads, and folks don’t need to fish for change any more.

There are many ways for tracking people. Cops run plates all the time to get people for stupid shit. As with all info, making sure the system isn't abused is most important.

I remember the inconvenience of tolls on my last trip. This time I may make a detour, partly to avoid tolls and mostly to avoid Chicago traffic.

Cameras in the public square can be used for so many good purposes that the faint worries about “Big Bad Brother” watching seem petty / contrived.

*nods*

I read a couple of articles on the epidemic of shoplifting. Some are done by individuals and more by organized criminal crews. The cost of retail theft is passed on to the consumers. If license plate recognition technology can help to lower the price of consumer goods, it will be a worthwhile trade.

Or prevention/arresting for any other criminal activities which will saves cost on either goods or enforcement thus lowering taxes or cost. .

If you don't like to be under surveillance, move somewhere remote, stay there and you're not. It's a simple choice.

You can't have 1st Amendment rights for an individual to film in a public area and not allow the Govt or any business to film.

If the technology is there, they will use it. Plates are issued by the state, not protected in the Constitution.
Smart criminals have always and will continue to use fake plates when they do crime.
The stupid will be caught with, or without, a plate reader.

They need a mind reader to figure out,
What the heck were you thinking?

Just like Racial Profiling and proactive stop and frisks and Broken Windows policing.
You have to pay the price to both fight crime and be in public. Right?
Maybe you can just walk, but DRAT! Facial recognition.
And if we all move to remote, desolate Canada.
Then that's where the criminals will be.

There may be some privacy issues, but for the most part it's a security device to track and hopefully stop criminals. What's the difference if you write down a license plate number with a pen and paper of a suspicious vehicle, and letting a piece of electronic read it for you?

....

Plate readers can be used to identify which vehicles are on the false plates and also to find the correct plate for those vehicles.

Any tool that can be used will end up being misused. <shrug> The authorities have been after something like this for a long time. Back in the 70's there was a proposal to have a magnetic strip built into every vehicle and then 'readers' would be strategically placed on various roadways. That idea got nixed. So now they're going with the vehicle equivalent of facial recognition.

Infrared turned a man's (traditional generic use ladies) castle into an invasive, searchable place/event in the war on drugs, which has been a pernicious evil since its inception and roots in Prohibition. We're not searching your premises, we're just observing hot spots where you might be growing pot. Then we'll get the search warrant, or just bust you and plead probable cause.

I don't want to be harassed and arrested over something my doppelgänger does any more than I want to be if someone steals my plates and robs a bank or pot dispensary.

And so it begins:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was once one of the most trusted institutions in the nation. FBI agents had the image of being honest, upright, patriotic, and not only not corrupt, but not corruptible. Beginning late in the Obama administration and accelerating sharply during the misrule of Old Joe Biden, however, the FBI took its sterling reputation, stomped on it with muddy shoes, tossed it in the dumpster, took it out and set fire to it, and threw the smoldering remainder into a vat of raw sewage. The survey site Statista reported in August 2022 that “Where 57 percent of U.S. adults said that the FBI was doing either an ‘excellent’ or a ‘good’ job in 2019, this fell to 44 percent in 2021.”

The FBI has, in these dark days of Biden’s handlers’ regime, become synonymous with corruption, partisanship, and dirty dealing. Nor is there any relief in sight; instead, it’s likely to get worse: not only do Biden’s handlers have no intention of reining in today’s rogue FBI, but they’re rewarding it with a massive new building.

“Massive new building” is actually an understatement. Your taxpayer dollars are set to be used for a staggeringly massive new FBI complex that will be double the size of the Pentagon. If you have ever flown into Washington, you can often see the Pentagon from the air and get a clear idea of how immense it is. Now the feds will have a playground that makes the Pentagon look like some third-tier accountant’s cubicle.

Give them the space for more tools. What could possibly go wrong? Can you say "Surveillance State?"

No not like racial profiling/stop and frisk, those are two different things. No idea what broken window policing is, never heard of it.
You have to pay the price to both fight crime and be in public. Right?
Yes there is a price to protect people and property, I am in favour of tools that make it cost effective.
Maybe you can just walk, but DRAT! Facial recognition.
Everyone has a camera these days, public places have CCTV, stores have CCTV, I don't care, I am not shy, nor a criminal.
And if we all move to remote, desolate Canada.
Beat you to it.
Then that's where the criminals will be.
Criminals are where the opportunity is. The harder it is for a crime to occur, the less likely a crime of opportunity will occur.

Give me a P, give me an A, give me an R,give me an N, now an O, add an I, finish with D, what do you get...... paranoid
