earlier this year I was in on the formation of a new team for the West Palm Beach Co-Ed SlowPitch Softball league.
This was the first time many of us had played any kind of ball since High School. We were absolutely terrible, but we kept at it.
In our first game we played a team called the GT Bombers, ranked second in the League. It was humiliating, they beat us 32-3. That was the first in a string of six losses.
We played and we practiced. We did drills and we spent extra time at the batting cages. Because I split my time betwen Catching and Right Center Field I took some of my batting cage time and cranked up the pitching machine to fast pitch and caught the balls.
Tonight we went up against the GT Bombers with a string of six straight losses under our belts.
They laughed and they joked as they came up to bat first. They started wondering when their first three batters were either struck out or played out at first. They really started worrying when we came up to bat and got five runs right off.
We played clean and they complained about every call. They started to play a bit dirty, standing in the baseline, throwing their bats, etc.
It was tied at the beginning of the last inning. We held them with one run even though they tried several nasty plays on us. Then we came up to bat. I was hitting fourth and came up with bases loaded. I got a nice double. The next batter up took the balls and walked. Next batter hit a single and I was waiting on third. The Catcher had been making some comments during the game, especially to my wife who was playing for the first time. The ball was hit and I was off, the catcher stepped up onto HomePlate blocking it even as the Ump. was telling him to clear the plate. As I came up he took a swipe at me with his glove, (and if you've never been hit in the face with a Ball Glove I can fill in a blank. It smarts.) I hit him with a body check hard enugh his ass bounced off the Back Stop, clearng Home for the next two runners.
Oh we won 25 to 17.
It was a fun night.
