This name must die

I don't want to buy into the existing controversy on this thread with the singular exception that my experience/knowledge base confirms what Cat has already stated. I understood what Dove was referring to when she used the term 'Tribal Elders' from her opening post, perhaps it's because the term is also used here in reference to Indigenous Australians, the Aborigine . Generally implies not only older people but also people of wisdom supported by the Cultural Community to offer as a guiding body across a range of responsibilities.
I did a bit of googling to learn about the situation here in the U.S. As part of an extensive Q&A on the subject of Indian identification and rights, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (an agency of the U.S. government) describes it this way:

"Most tribal governments are organized democratically, that is, with an elected leadership. The governing body is generally referred to as a "council" and comprised of persons elected by vote of the eligible adult tribal members. The presiding official is the "chairman," although some tribes use other titles such as "principal chief," "president" or "governor." An elected tribal council, recognized as such by the
Secretary of the Interior, has authority to speak and act for the tribe and to represent it in negotiations with Federal State, and local governments. Tribal governments generally define conditions of membership, regulate domestic relations of members, prescribe rules of inheritance for reservation property not in trust status, levy taxes, regulate property under tribal jurisdiction, control conduct of members by tribal ordinances, and administer justice."

I could find no mention of "elders" in the Bureau's piece. However, according to the Cherokee Nation website, the "Tribal Council consists of Tribal Elders and State Clan Chiefs."

Assuming that the "council" referred to on the Cherokee site equates to the "councils" mentioned by the Bureau, it appears that Tribal Elders in the U.S. wield tangible political power over other members of the Indian nations they represent. All of this explains Dove's comments: "i receive tribal funding, and funeral pyre rights. And in doing so; since i do not live on the reservation; i have to follow certain rules that the Elders have put into law for all of us that do not live there. Unless i want to take the chance of having my funding taken away; and more importantly for me; the right to be allowed to have my soul sent up to the Greater Spirits through use of the funeral pyre."

People are getting more worked up about this than I would have imagined. Yeah, I figured out she was talking about Native American elders, but I didn't see why she should have to disappear because of it. Okay, so they told her to do it because they felt it was disrespectful. I don't see why this has gotten so big. Like I said, I think the Taliban comment would have been rude except Betticus said he genuinely didn't get it. I'm not saying Dove got upset over nothing, but why are we still going on about this?
I still don't "get it", in the sense that I don't understand voluntary allegiance to authority figures who persecute on the basis of lifestyle/sexual preference.

My reaction to the Elders' threat to ostracize Dove is the same as my reaction to the Catholic church's ostracism of gays, or similar persecution waged by any ethnic, religious, community, or government leaders. I think it's disgusting and morally repugnant, and I don't respect it at all.

I wonder what "regulating domestic relations" means? Is that taking care of domestic disputes, or telling you who you can and can't marry, etc?

Probably means that they can perform marriages, divorces, etc..

It may be her local tribe but it is Indian. Yes, she is Cherokee, it's one of the things that made us "sisters". She's been taking classes on learning the language and getting more involved with her tribe. This is very serious to her. Maybe some dont mind, but maybe her tribal elders do.

So, it is Cherokee. Funny rules I guess. I know too many Cree here would scoff at such rules.

Yes, Xelecbes; or however you spell it; that name is on google. But did you explain to these people that if you checked the site listings where the name was it comes back to either gaming sites; such as Pogo, Shockwave, etc...or a readers board that shows posts that i have made on one forum, LITEROTICA.

No you did not. So your opinion means JACK SHIT TO ME!

My grandmother was full blooded Cherokee. i follow a lot of my tribal ways, including going thru the proper ceremonies to be given that tribal name.
The Cherokee will tell you(those that TRULY care about their heritage, anyways) that there are certain ceremonies that do not get discussed, due to the fact that those ceremonies are very private and personal to us.

i receive tribal funding, and funeral pyre rights. And in doing so; since i do not live on the reservation; i have to follow certain rules that the Elders have put into law for all of us that do not live there. Unless i want to take the chance of having my funding taken away; and more importantly for me; the right to be allowed to have my soul sent up to the Greater Spirits through use of the funeral pyre.

So, that is why i removed the name. If you don't like it, i don't give a shit!

GET IT? GOT IT? GOOD!!!!!!

Sorry if I put you in such a rage, just that many here were not aware of your circumstances with your family (tribe... ugh, hate using tribe in this forum, can we call it family here?). It would have probably been better to just omit the fact that it was "tribal leaders" here.

Too many who use these boards are into roleplaying right on the forum so I had to raise flags.

Please accept my apology.

I happen to think that using the potential loss of your funding or rights to have you change a screen name is an abuse of position. Something I would expect more out of an extremist group like the taliban or a cult. I never said that you were in a cult or a member of the taliban.

Yeah, that is a bit extreme. If my clan-chief said I could not use Macalister or any of my given names on this forum (to be draw as close of an example as I could) or else I would lose my funding would be a gross misuse of authority on their part. No matter how much I enjoyed eating haggis on Robbie Burns day or joining in on the pyre festivals, I would not stand for such abuse.

I shall ask some of my Cree friends. I know there are some corrupt band-chiefs out there. One of the many reasons why so many come to my city.

*nod* I knew what DOS was talking about. I think her name sounds Native American, so if I hadn't seen any of her posts, I would have thought that is what she was referring to.

*shrug*

I did not pick that up. However, most native names used here are "Running Bear", "Singing Beaver" or something along that lines. That or something like "Amiskwaskahegan".

this is the thread that never ends,
it just goes on and on my friends.
some people started posting here not knowing what it was,
and now they'll keep on posting forever just because... (repeat)

Last post i am going to make on this issue, and then i would like to have the whole thread just fade away because the old name cannot die here until this thread does.

Seri, i was not pissed at most of the replies. Just of the two who made the comments of "Taliban" and "cult".

As bunny said, until i cleaned out all the info in that names profile, it was clearly mentioned that i am Cherokee. And i have commented in different posts about my Cherokee heritage and ways.

The reason i even made the thread was to let those i consider friends to know what was happening and why, and so that no one here could claim i was trying to pull something over on the forum, with changing names to hide (or not hide) something.

So, with that being said; i appreciate the "welcome backs", accept the one apology; and wish this whole issue to be dropped.:rose:

Given that you inferred that you would want to cut the skin off of the top of my head don't hold your breath hoping to ever find some kind of apology from me.
