this is so sad

without a voice to keep them connected, they would soon lose each other.

I can hope so poop on you debbie downer. :)

Maybe the pod would recognize her distress and watch after her. It's not unheard of in real life.

how can they watch her if they can't keep track of her? in the ocean, you need only be a few metres away to lose visual contact.

do they capture adult animals this size? i thought they just kidnapped immature animals?

catching it would be hugely traumatic and dangerous.

OK I admit I don't know the size of this whale but Seaworld moves adult whales all the time.

I got curious, so I went and read about poor 52 Hertz, as they call him or her. It turns out the OP has a bit of conjecture in it. There are whales with songs that range much higher than 52 hertz, so it's hard to claim with certainty that no one hears the poor guy or girl. Also, his or her voice as been deepening over the years. Finally, it's not a sure thing that he/she's a one-off; one thought is that he's part of an as-yet-undiscovered variant of balene.

Still, really interesting. Thanks for posting.

ones that are already contained and used to human contact.

this is like... oh, look! a lion! let's put it in the cat carrier, stick it in the car and take it for a drive!

:( I don't think dolf is a debbie downer. :) But I do get your point.

^This thread is an eye opener and a thought provoker.

I've fucked you.

it seems healthy. maybe the 'sad' bit is a human projection.

Hmmm, downloading data. Processing, translating using human parameters and definitions.

Process complete.

I believe you are quite probably correct.

Not being able to communicate to your own species sucks.

Being isolated from a species is actually quite common in the animal world.
They don't have any need to look after injured pack members or ones that challenge for alpha and fail.... those get kicked out of the pack/group and live solo. You see it with all different animals - from meerkats to lions.

Being isolated from a species may be quite common but I disagree that whales do not look after other isolated or injured whales. Including individuals or pods.

You might not consider it a need but I think it is proven that in the animal world animals want to help and do so for the most part.

i wonder if there is any way to alter her pitch through some kind of underwater sound filter in a backpack.

edit. frequency. that's the right word. i think. i just listen to the noises.

Pitch is frequency. Just wanted to point that out.

Anyway... back to whales.

Strictly speaking, that's not exactly the case, but close enough for jazz. Frequency is a measurable faculty of the physical world: literally how many times a wave completes a cycle in a second.

Pitch is a perceptual phenomenon that lives solely in the domain of cognition. There is a VERY close relationship between frequency and pitch--waves of different frequencies trigger nerve firings associated with different pitches, and those pitches relate to each other in a manner similar to the frequencies--but they're not truly the same thing.

/nerd moment

wait. so would it have been pitch or frequency in the sentence?
