Points to anyone who gets the above reference

personally, I don't see much diff between

bab 5---nightwatch
nazi germany--ss
us--office of homeland security

please define what wars we've been involved in that were just

and what are the just or acceptable reasons to go to war?

and out of curiosity, do you espouse these or are you trying to play devils advocate

the last year ended up mostly filler...what hapenned was that after hearing the show was going to be cancelled after year 4, jms sped up the story line and cut a lot out (the minbari civil war, etc) and then when it did get renewed, he had to do some stuff. Also, claudia christensen leaving the show fucked up a lot...Ivanova was supposed to fall for byron, which would have led to a much better storyline.

No, I'm all for war, most times.

Revolutionary war was just. So was the Civil. I don't know much about WW1, but WW2 was to stop a madman. Vietnam, well, we shouldn't have gotten in there, since it was really no skin off our noses.

You don't seriously expect him to know the answer to that, do you? :p

Remember, bird, question too much authority, spend the rest of your life at minimum wage. Your choice.

I've got all the answers; just ask, I'll be sure to tell you so. ;)

There are just somethings I don't question for convenient's sake.

are there right reasons?

is any war just?

As I said, I'm not anti or pro war. I weigh each side, hear all the arguments, and never make a decision as to how I stand. Mainly for these very reasons. There are no valid reasons for war, yet at the same time, there does come a time when striking first can prevent bigger problems down the line. I can see both sides.

Is any war just? Well, I do believe that self-defense is just. Turning the other cheek is a great virtue. But the big kid on the block can only take so many strikes to the cheek before he breaks the hand that strikes him. I would prefer a peaceful resolution myself. But yet, the realist in me knows that won't come to pass. Again, I'm stuck in the middle.

But, if my wife does go to war, I'm here for her above all else...my country will just happen to benefit from that.

Revolutionary war, perhaps.

Civil War...we could have let the south go it's own way. And as McPherson and Foner have pointed out, there were key moments when the war could've been ended earlier as well as the piss poor way the gov't handled reconstruction which festered war time hatred some of which persists today.

WWI we didn't really need to get involved with...the excuse used was flimsy (the sinking of the lusitania which our govt maintained was a passenger ship, but which historians later proved was doing a gun run to England to supply them with arms).

WWII's "mad man" came to power only b/c of the situation the allies set up after WWI with the unreasonably harsh demands made on germany. We set up the political climate for Hitler to come to power. And PS, we didn't join the war b/c of hitler...we joined it b/c Japan bombed us. That we eventually demonized hitler is merely to our credit...before we were in the war, we pretty much ignored him and his 3rd reich.

Vietnam was none of our concern. It's laughable really...what you had a was colony (vietnam) fighting to be free of it's imperial power (france). Considering that's how we got our start, it's ironic that we would get involved, or stay involved even after france had given up, under the idea that we were fighting the spread of communism.

Korea...no real good reason,

Iraq (take one)...no good reason beyond it might affect our oil prices

Iraq (take 2)...see above (and the fact that shrub's been hunting for a reason to go in since before 9/11 happenned)

War threads should be contained and unceremoniously deleted by the moderator, unless it's about wars that happen thousands of years ago; those are cool.

Well, we need the oil. Are you willing to bike to work every day? Probably not. I wouldn't be. They have something we need. That's what it comes down to in the end. We need it, they need our business. Other, past societies would just go in and take it all. They're lucky, really.

No, I take the subway to work.

War is not a good reason to further our own greedy desire for something we overconsume in the first place.

Of course you don't question my authority, you're a well trained little birdie.
