Think about your avatar

Oh, and don't go spreading that male thing everywhere. My fellow lesbians would be pissed.

Let me test that theory: Sandia, as a fellow lesbian, are you pissed that Never is an effeminate male?

OK, I'll stop. In my defense, let me just say that I think that I'm getting drunk on the intoxicating irony of which Lord Luncan is a veritable fount.

I beg your pardon LordLukan, we are discussing avatars. I’ll ask you to stop straying from the conversation.

My avatar says that I’m a cold-hearted yet feminine person who is completely apathetic to the rantings of five-year-olds in men’s bodies but does take pleasure in watching them make complete and utter fools of themselves

I have stated it many times. Someone else just did. Maybe you do not have the mental capacity to grasp it. I can not say it with any more clarity. Maybe you should cease asking, re-read, and (God Forbid) THINK.....Maybe then the light of wisdom will shine on you.

Name calling? LL I am surprised.
Insults wrapped up in clever words still mean the same thing.

Now, I’d like to make it very clear that I’m not talking to any one poster, nor am I pretending to hand down commandments from the mountaintop. This is just my opinion:

If you plan to engage in serious discussion please be aware of your avatar’s ability undermine your credibility.

To go along with that; remember that your avatar both serves to identify you and to color your post. People will make unconscious assumptions about your attitude and personality based on everything from the subject matter of your avatar, to its style, to even the colors it uses.

While sexual imagery is expected, crude or highly explicit content can cause negative reactions. Just because you have sex with your genitalia doesn’t make genitalia sexy. Remember, the vast majority of content can be aesthetically pleasing and arousing, or ugly enough to make a viewer grimace.

If your avatar is a picture of a real person or a character, please be aware of associations people have with that person or character. A good example would be that of the gentleman who unknowingly used a gay porn star as his avatar and then became quite upset when men started hitting on him.

These are just a few of my thoughts on the subject of avatars. Feel free to disagree or offer your own. Or talk about what you think of avatars in general." Unquote

Never states clearly this is her opinion.

Now this is my opinion.

When I first posted to this thread my response was light hearted and flippant. But as this thread has progressed and others posted their thoughts or insight I began to seriously think about what Never had originally said.
Now my opinion is I thought that I based my opinion of someone solely on their words not the av they are displaying at the time.

When I think about it in depth? When you open a thread and have avs turned on? My eyes are attracted to the image of the av. Does that affect in any way what I perceive about the poster in a subliminal way? Possibly.

Another thought? One of my favourite avs is a lovely sexy woman with barely anything on by Carlos Cartagena. My reasons for liking this particular av was because she is cheeky like me. (Her butt is showing) Someone who is new to the board or does not know me may see that av and think? Sexy av, she writes erotic stories etc. Their first impressions of me are my av and then my words. Could that little picture influence them to think I am a certain way?
Now that I think about it? I got more PM’s from men when I used that av than I do with my ‘fun’ avs. Now on the board I openly state I am married. I flirt and tease but I do not engage in anything else. Yet the PM’s I got from new people or men who I had no interaction with were full of sexual innuendo and invitations to play with them.
Food for thought? Yes indeed. So even though my words are not full of come hither, guys I want to cyber fuck with you etc that particular av gives a different message.
When I used the same av again recently? I got a few comments very quickly. In conclusion? I am still pondering the issue.
Again this is my opinion only. And it was an interesting exercise, Never. Especially reading what other people think. :)

I almost feel shameful at the way I’ve allowed this thread to stray from its original point. Almost
I’m glad you found this to be an interesting exercise; the interplay between words, images, and reactions has always fascinated me. I think you give an excellent example of how even the simplest of choices can change another’s perception, and thus treatment of you. Thank you for sharing.

Damn. I KNEW there was a reason why I was less pleased with this AV! ;)

Tortoise, you've scored twice here. Once with the constipated squirrel, and now again with the "intoxicating irony."

I wanted to let you know I appreciated them. "Veritable font" was a bonus.

Can you not stay on topic?? Slow class graduate??

On the contrary, Oh Lord, that question cut to the very root of the topic, but your cognitive processes have obviously deteriorated to such a point that you are completely incapable of comprehending a single thing that you read.

Try and follow me here. I'll keep it simple: In creating this thread, Never neither said nor implied a single thing that you have accused her of saying.

Like I said earlier (to intrigued): any criticism at Lit is name calling. She said I was wrong. People start threads and can not intellectually justify them. I speak to one's mental capabilities, that is name calling.

You have proved my point in more ways than one.

There is a "fake" intellectual depth here. It is really no better than a common chat forum.

One guy took great delight in checking my spelling, but never spoke to the thread's topic.

Another was oddly fixated on the fact that I had consumed 5 beers since 4 PM EDT. (Yet I am still here and he has pushed off...so much for mental strength and clarity).

I still can not fathom your point. I have tried. But, I do not call "names."

I am reminded of this story about Leonardo trying to teach a sparrow the political systems of the ancient Greeks.

LOL

You rock.

It was fun for a while, but his lordly skull seems to be thickening at an ever increasing rate, so the game is losing some of its savor.

I admire your patience and wit. Inform Ginny she’s to provide you something exceptional in bed tonight.

The only problem I've ever had with avatars (*carefully puts on flame-retardant suit*) are the super sexy women avatars.

To me these seems slightly (okay, really) silly. It almost projects a sort of sad hopefulness the way some women represent themselves (I'm sure incredibly beautiful in their own natural way) with outlandishly sexy and exaggerated images. Perfect breasts, long legs, flowing hair. All I ever think is, "come off it, you don't look like that." To me, these images are all interchangeable and show no real character.

It also in my mind puts them in a certain category. In my mind, there are two groups at Lit: the ones who are here for serious talk and occasional silliness, and the ones who are here for flirting and around the clock silliness. The sexy woman avatar says to me, "I'm here to get sexual attention that I perhaps don't get in real life, and I'm going to do it with this image that looks nothing like me, except for maybe the hair color."

Now I know that every poster with a sexy woman avatar is not like that. I'm just saying what the avatar says to ME.

What does my avatar say? HellifIknow.

Add me to your fan club. I put you on my buddy list as a cumulitive result of all the remarks you've beaten me too ;)

I'm not going to read all 16 pages of this thread, but I did want to say that I agree with Never's original statement.

Oh, and I think she rocks.

Oh, and I want her.

I have a picture of my tit that I love. Artistically, the lighting and contrast and form are beautiful to my eye. However, when I've used it as an av, I just can't stand to see my words next to it.

Remedial reading is next door----->

Avatars are meaningless. That was my first response, And my last. The words and deeds outweigh a small pic in the left corner of a page.... Unless you are a vacuous nebulosity with no focusing skills. (Did I get the spelling??)..

You are just pissing on my leg and trying to convince me it is raining. We are not amused......

And still you fail to directly speak to the topic. I never disabused NEVER. This thread was not designed to disabuse the Earl of Lucan. It was to discuss avatars. Remember?? Or am I drunk?? If I am, I will be sober tomorrow and you will still be struggling to recall the reason this thread was started....

I rock?
How flattering.

Actually, I was wondering if you could send me a picture of yourself? Something I could show to my friends.. my conservative friends?

I wish you’d make up your mind about whether you disagree with me or not LL.

It could be that I have been awake 23 hours..but you have chosen to believe I am "drunk." Do you so easily buy into rumours??

I refer you to the many answers previously made to this now tiresome querry. I think avatars do not have any salient meaning. They are interesting, but unimportant when really attempting to get to know someone.

You are merely playing games. You have no actual interest in avs. I have only stated my position 100 times.

No, I am not playing games. I am waiting for you to provide one bit of evidence to support the claims you’ve made about what I believe.

Please show me where I said, or implied, that avatars have ‘salient meaning’.
