They Had a Dream

Too many colors...

;) ;)

We see this intellectual conceit in most of the compelling issues of the day where the academic faculty types ignore real Science and like Canute impose common-sense straight-line Socialist Math to complex and chaotic systems and try to force climate, people and economies to behave the way that they have always dreamed they should...

Then the walls, come tumblin' down...

As usual, plain English, please. Thank you.

Obamacare is not "on life support", you stupid son of a bitch.

That's simply wishful thinking from the fucktard right.

You really can't form a single sentence without as schoolyard insult replete with misogyny, racism, antisemitism, homophobia, or denigrating special needs kids, can you?

"Making right-wingers cry."

You seem awfully sure of the wounding capacity of your scant quiver.

You seem to be the one whose antennae doesn't pick up all the channels.

But he is amazing to watch in action. He's in perpetual campaign mode. He even campaigns against his own policies. It's like he never took the oath of office, let alone responsibility. To the casual observer he appears to be the candidate running for office that is going to cure all the wrongs that have erupted under his watch. And in reality he's not only NOT cured any of the wrongs, he's busily been creating some new ones. Thank God he's term limited, but he's going to leave one hell of a mess behind.

Ishmael

He campaigns daily to fix the problems that he himself created, 'cept he makes it sound like someone else created them..... The people applause.

Care to list any specific problems you feel President Obama has created?
Or are you just spoutin' glittering generalities and general butthurt.

I refuse to dumb it down. I spent months and months trying to have an adult conversation with you and it all boiled down to one final exasperated gasp proclaiming that the sole political litmus that you cherish above all else is the sacrament of abortion. If you know someone is pro-life, whatever the issue is, you treat all their points of view as dead on arrival, a veritable lie that must be argued against even if on some deeper level you actually agree. That POV must be defeated because it might lead to one abortion not being performed.

You have thusly reduced yourself to more polite, but just as dogmatic, shadow of ThrobDownSouth, a true yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye Democrat.

Could be worse.
You could have elected a Tony Abbott.

The only thing that elects a Tony Abbott is an opposition which has, for whatever reason, ruled against the will of the people creating a mistrust and a willingness to actually listen to the opposition and discovering that they just might not actually be Satan here on earth.

The author spent a lot of time on that. But I think it can be distilled down to considerably fewer words.

"You cannot cure an injustice visited on one innocent individual by visiting an injustice on another innocent individual. Any attempt to do so is merely playing a sick game of 'victims musical chairs.' And if you attempt to apply this 'cure' on a group level you are sowing the seeds of civil discord."

Ishmael

We've said that very thing many times over the years, especially when discussing the new implied "rights" of the SOcial Justice mentality.

Grampa Syphillish

Even shorter Ish-paraphrase: "Two wrongs don't make a right, for non-whites anyway. Anything before modern history (defined as January 20th, 2009...the rise of the Negro Usurper) simply does not matter."

I think the conclusion is the money quote:

It may very well be the case that African Americans will never, no matter what policies are enacted, catch up economically with whites. Even assuming that invidious racism were an entirely negligible factor, it is likely that economic development will tend to proceed along broad racial channels if, for example, people of various ethnicities tend to largely marry within their ethnic group, live in neighborhoods largely populated by co-ethnics, and engage in other social-sorting behavior that is racial at its root but not really what we mean by the word “racism.” If that is the case — and it seems that it is — then initial conditions will be very important for a very long period of time.

And that would be true even if there had been no slavery and no discrimination. Imagine, for example, that rather than having been brought to the colonies as slaves, the first Africans to arrive in the New World had come as penniless immigrants in 1900. If their incomes grew in the subsequent century at the same rate as those of white natives, then a century later they’d still be as far behind as they were when they arrived. Income gaps have been closed and closed quickly by some immigrant groups — notably European Jews, Vietnamese immigrants, and Indian immigrants — because their incomes across the first few generations grew much, much more quickly than the native rate. And though the hostility that often met these immigrants is not comparable to the experience of slavery and African Americans’ subsequent repression, it is worth appreciating that Jewish and Asian immigrants have not always been welcomed with universal warmth. The black experience is unique within the context of American history, but it is hardly unique within the context of the experience of other racial minorities in other societies throughout history.

Mr. Coates is largely correct about the past and is to a degree correct about the present. About the future, he is catastrophically wrong. The political interests of African Americans, like those of other Americans, are best served by equality under the law. The economic interests of African Americans, like those of other Americans, are best served by a dynamic and growing economy, preferably one in which the labor force is liberated from the dysfunctional, antique Prussian model of education that contributes so much to black poverty. The people to whom reparations were owed are long dead; our duty is to the living, and to generations yet to come, and their interests are best served by liberty and prosperity, not by moral theater.

What I found interesting in the link you provided was the reference to the Prussian model of education, which takes us right back to von Humboldt.

We also see him weaving is some Rand and echoing that which I have been saying for some time, that our academics have been leading us toward, in the name of Social Justice, is a new tribalism complete with Witch Doctor and the blind hatred of Capitalism and thus the individual and individual liberties.

"Once that fact is acknowledged, then the case for reparations is only moral primitivism: My interests are inextricably linked to my own kin group and directly rivalrous with yours, i.e., the very racism that this program is in theory intended to redress. Mr. Coates also, I think, miscalculates what the real-world effects of converting our liberal conception of justice into a system of racial appropriation might mean. There are still, after all, an awful lot of white people, and though many of them might be inclined to make amends under some sort of racial truce following the process Mr. Coates imagines, many of them might simply be inclined to prevail. The fact is that the situation of African Americans in the United States has improved precisely to the extent that whites have begun to forgo tribalism and to genuinely commit themselves to the principles of liberalism, the long march toward a more perfect Union. The alternative — a system of exclusive interests in which black and white operate effectively in opposition — is not only morally repugnant, but likely to undermine the genuine political and economic interests of African Americans."

You mean like the racial 'quota' system?

Ishmael

And Warren-style, well there might be one drop, who are you to say there's not?

;) ;)

*chuckle* I'd love to see a US census come out with 99% of the population checking off 'other.' It'd drive the politicians bat shit crazy.
