The realization had come to her days before...maybe hours...maybe weeks. She had lain unmoving since she felt the last one in the forest had fallen. When she had felt its presence leave the enchanted place she had felt her heart crack apart in her chest. The little female creature had grown weak and weary and resentful of her long years passed and the years to come. Resentful of her inability to keep track of the time that had passed since she had been born to the planet through the touch of the unicorn's horn to the river she called her home.

She had felt the moment the forest had begun to tremble with rage and the weight of anxiety that remained the in flow of the water and the dance of the flowers in the breeze. No mortal animal dared approach her in her solitude though she felt them watching her and felt the desire many of them to console her in her grieving state.

Even when the trees whispered urgently of coming danger she remained motionless.
So there she lay, her bare form pressed against the rocks, skin shimmering in the sun.

The unicorn had warned her, so had the trees. There was evil in the forest where she lived. The only danger was no longer only the sexual predators of dwarf clans or giants the mystical beings were not alone . Man had long since found the enchanted place and begun twisting away its purity.

Still, she did not hide, the river nymph cared not for her fate consumed by the evil that had entered her precious sanctuary. Someone had slain the precious creature the thought alone was so overwhelming to her she could not find the will to move from where she lay now. What danger could the forest bring to her, she was dead inside she believed she could feel nothing ever again.

The tears would not stop as the kept rolling down her cheeks. The emptiness she now felt was painful, tearing her heart slowly into pieces. The trees had warned her, the animals had warned her but everything was as it was always until the humans came. Twisting their evil into their magical world, leaving their dark evil footprint wherever they stepped or touched.
She thought she could survive it, they had before, but this was unimaginable pain. Wherever she dared look evil was there, working its way into the pulsing life of nature.
Lying here on the damp earth where she had fallen, the leaves and roots slowly twisting around her over time, the small animals approaching slowly but then retreating after failing to console her.

'My soul is broken. My heart is broken.' she muttered over and over, her body lying there motionless. With every new dawn she could feel the magic slowly draining away, the life of the forest weakening, why did she have to suffer? why did they all have to..?

She knew the moment the unicorn was slain, the pain ripping the screams from her throat as she collapsed, crying with emotion then came nothing....nothing was left to feel but the tears kept falling.

'Sisters....' she whispered, closing her eyes hoping that some day soon the life in her would go like it had with the last unicorn.

Kevin Hornsford

He had been tracking these poachers for two days now, they had killed a small group of deer just for the stag horns, not meat or anything else, just the horns. It was just senseless killing, killing for fun, it was the worst waste he had even seen.

The worse shock was when he came across the unicorn they had killed...they just...killed it. Didn't take anything, but a few strands from the mane and the tail. He knelt next to the magnificent creature, a deep sadness came over his being,

"What have you done?"

His voice was thick with emotion as he gently stroked the cold neck, the silky hair of the mane.

"You fools."

She lay there curled up in the leaves and soil, the roots slowly beginning to twist their way to her, if she lay long enough she knew she would become one with the earth beneath her.
Lifting her eyes to the sky she watched as the sun passed over the canopy above sending down different colours from the leaves above, Why must they ruin this? ... she thought as she watched the small insects moving around, the flowers reaching out to the sky for some more sun and rain.
Sighing she closed her eyes once more, she had not heard from her sisters, normally they would be able to feel one another over long distances, but as in her heart there was nothing.
Had her sisters died? most probably she thought, or were they lying here like this, giving up as the pain and emptiness never went....
She sent a pray up that they would no longer suffer and meet again in the other world....

The little water creature called Nixie propped herself up on the riverbank and craned her neck to better hear. Another type of magic called to her, with the same heartbroken sorrow she felt. She had not seen any of her sisters in her recent memory...though her concept of time was not exactly that of a humans.
She timidly started to crawl from the water and parting her lips just barely.
"I hear you dear sister" she sung quietly to the wind as she moved towards the sound she had heard.

She could hear her name on the wind, "Nixie?" she whispered aloud, the leaves stirring as she craned her neck to listen more carefully, that was definitely her sister calling through the wind.
Eve smiled a little as she sent her own message back, using the trees and plants to send it, "Nixie."
Eve lay her head down once more listening to the creatures underground burrowing away and living their day to day lives, her sister was fine she couldn't help but smile.

Lying there everything was silent for a moment till she heard another sound but this time it wasn't travelled on the wind, this was from the ground, it was footsteps..no something heavier. Eve frowned as she tried to concentrate on it, but her powers were drained once the unicorn had been killed she used to be able to pin point any creature but now it all blended into a dull thud thud thud underneath her.
Curling into herself further she watched as a nearby flower expanded with the sun, it blossomed and seeing that gave her the small hope that they would all be ok, somehow the magic just might return.

A strange sound caught his attention and he quickly slipped the bow from his should, he left the heart wrenching site behind him and headed for the sound. Using the green of his clothing to the best of his advantage to hide among the foliage as he pulled an arrow from the bag belted to his waist, fitting it to the string of the bow as he moved towards the sound, hoping it to be the poachers.

Eve lay perfectly still as she concentrated on the sound, one moment it sounded like it was heading her way then one moment it seemed at a distance.
She hoped her sister Nixie was ok, she had not seen her for sometime but nyphms normally didn't stay in too close a proximity or mischief would happen, she smiled to herself as she remember numerous times of her and Nixie causing mischief.
Closing her eyes once more she let the breeze brush her skin sending a chill down her spine, the sound was definitely getting closer, "You have to move..." she muttered to herself, "Move."
With the little strength she had left she brought herself up on her arms and moaned as her joints ached from being used after such a long time.
"You have to move." she grimaced trying to move her legs.
