Born at sea in the year of the lord 1747, Dirk Steele was the son of Brock Steele, a smuggler and pirate in the Caribbean Sea.
Upon Brock being recalled back to England to attend to business interests and with secret motivations of entering the British Parliament, Captain Dirk Steele assumed command of Brock's pirate fleet and entire Caribbean enterprise.
Captain Dirk ruled from aboard Crown's Bane, the shining flagship of the fleet, a ship that once belonged to a British Duke sent to colonize the island of St. Vincent. Having been successful raided and captured by Brock, this three-decker ship with its 98 guns was the prize of the Steele operation.
Having been born and raised on the sea, Dirk learned to tie knots and raise sails before he was even walking. A natural, his men aspired to be him and would always strive to impress their Captain. As the time went on, some of the crew found their own interests led them out of the Steele's service, but there was no love lost between pirates.
Living the high life, Captain Dirk, Crown's Bane and his fleet of half a dozen ships dropped anchor in the shallowing waters of Tortuga, and made their away ashore to trade, recruit, and in search of information regarding the expected arrival of a shipment of Aztec gold from the mainland. As it would turn out, Dirk and his crew were not the only thieves on the lookout for a quick profit.
