The Word Is...

Word of the day game. Sometimes there's a word that perfectly describes your day or that you can't get off the brain, for whatever reason. I love words, so I have a lot of those days. So. Here, post said word, along with a definition. And optionally, why the word is on the brain.

My word of the day: Seraphim.

ser·aph 'serəf/

plural noun: seraphim

an angelic being, regarded in traditional Christian angelology as belonging to the highest order of the ninefold celestial hierarchy, associated with light, ardor, and purity.

It's from the name of a song called The Host of Seraphim by Dead Can Dance, which is a nice instrumental track that I heard for the first time in a while today. I say it to myself occasionally because it has a very unusual feel on the tongue. It's one of those hefty, out of place words that never really has any use, but is fun to use nonetheless.

Definition of quixotic
1-- foolishly impractical especially in the pursuit of ideals; especially : marked by rash lofty romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action
2-- capricious, unpredictable

It's a fun word to describe my highly unpredictable day.

Definition of solecism:

An ungrammatical combination of words in a sentence; also a minor blunder in speech.

Something deviating from the proper, normal, or accepted order.

A breach of etiquette or decorum

No particular reason, it's one of the words I like.

Today's word: Grimoire.

gri·moire ɡrimˈwär/

a book of magic spells and invocations.

There's this character from a game (DotA 2) named Warlock who loves to collect magical knowledge. One of the beautiful things about DotA 2 is that it has directed dialogue. Whenever certain characters interact with each other (on the same team... See each other on enemy team... Get a kill on each other... Get a kill with each other's assistance) they say certain lines. When Warlock kills one hero (I forget who, specifically) he says 'Smooooooked.' I encourage you to look up his dialogue. :D

Anyway, Warlock carries around a grimoire in which he stores his knowledge.

Such a plebian word, but it must suffice for the day, as it is on the brain.

Today... Saccharine

sac·cha·rine. ˈsak(ə)rən/
adjective

excessively sweet or sentimental.

I can't say why I like the word. I vaguely remember it being used to describe a singer's voice. When it comes to mind, I think science. Sugars. Saccharine. Such unusual spelling for a word. Just a few minutes ago I was indulging in an extremely saccharine memory. Warm, heartfelt, and bittersweet. One of those many 'could have been' moments in my life.
