so much better if they got rid of the figure skating.

Come on, I am actually interested for once in watching the Olympics. Show me the good stuff, long jump & downhill skiing, speed skating, etc.

How many of you actually like the figure skating???

I like the pairs skating. The Zhang performance brought me to tears. They were the Olympic spirit.

As PJ O'Rourke put it, figure skating is just bad ballet at moderately high speeds. Half-pipe snowboarding isn't even that.

You know I love the ice skating you booger.

I wouldn't watch it if you were around though.

I like it. The chicks wear some pretty clothing and the guys real are pretty athletic. Give it a try and see if you survive.

What?! I like the single men. Love it actually.

I needed a good laugh and those graceful hand gestures did it for me.

It's an easy 'tool' to utilize, for a guy to hoodwink-his-way into a chick's bed-shaped heart, by saying something like: " Hide-the-remote, babe... It's ALL Olympic-skating all-the-time tuh-night... "

Okay, all you figure skating lovers can have my fair share of it. It's like golf, just not my cup of tea.

My favorite, the long jump. Those people are crazy, it's awesome to see someone fly that far.

Oops, forgot, there is one reason to watch figure skating. The woman have GREAT asses and thighs.

Uhm no. Im not kidding. You are the opposite of the Olympic Spirit.

I lost my olympic spirit when it went corporate.

Do you know the towns not even named Torino but the head of NBC thought it sounded better than Turin so somehow it came to be called Torino?

I used to love the Olympics when it was special.

Today its either a bunch of ruch kids or freaky oddball shemales skating.

Whats your take on Kwan going through all those motions.

I can bear the skating in the same way I can bear a bad head cold, as longas its over quickly.
Give the skaters some clubs, have 'em spit out a few teeth and slap a frozen solid hunk of rubber at 100 mph, then, there's some skatin'.

My favorite, though, is the biathlon. Balls-out heart attack pace cross country skiing then having to calm down enough to shoot a small target at a fair distance, that tests all sorts of magical things the human body can do.

the olympics would be much better if it didn't come on when scrubs and The Office come on.

Kwan fought for the spot and wasn't ready. She should have done the classy thing and stepped down BEFORE she flew in and let Sarah Hughes get the whole experience.

I never put much into a persons financial status versus their athleticism. I highly doubt the people from China, "eastern block" or smaller countries have "rich kids" who bought their ways into the sports. For most, I believe it's about the passion of the sport. They know they're not going to win a medal. They go because they trained hard and deserve to represent their country.

Speaking of "corporate" sports - what is your take on the NFL? Nascar? College Basketball? Baseball? Surely if you have such distaste for corporate sponsorship, you'll feel the same way about those other sports.

Regarding the Turin vs Torino use, here is the explanation. They are two names for a single place. It's not NBC driven.

Turin (Italian: Torino; Piedmontese: Turin) is a major industrial city in north-western Italy, capital of the Piedmont region, located mainly on the west bank of the Po River. The population of Turin city is 908,000 (2004 census), but with its metropolitan area totals about 1.7 million inhabitants. The province is one of the largest in Italy, with 6,830 square kilometres (2,637 sq. mi), and one of the most populous, with 2,236,941 inhabitants at the 2004 census. Turin is currently hosting the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Figure skating is my favorite part of the winter games. I think it's elegant and graceful and incredibly hard to do. Anybody can ride a pair of skis or a snowboard (granted, not at that level) but few can truly skate well. I don't think they get enough credit for what they do.

The biathalon is harder than it looks but that's it's problem. It's not tv friendly simply because it looks easy. People see it and think "oh, cross country skiing, how quaint. And they shoot a small caliber rifle too? Isn't that cute!"
The reality is like you said, a difficult test of the body and mind.
