This is a story about a group of people who come together in the fantasy world of Azi'alaga, on the continent of Bowendar. It primarily takes place in Volzengard, a massive city-state that houses the world's biggest population. This is a sword and sorcery story with a focus on both romance and action. The year is 1724 AC (After Cataclysm), and our characters are attending the 300th Annual Festival of Independence. 300 years ago today, Volzengard gained independence and became a city-state.
The Cataclysm was a series of horrible natural disasters that decimated the ancient world. Massive quakes brought great cities to the ground, tsunamis flooded seaside havens, deadly storms tore through villages, and volcanoes angrily spat ash and lava. Some say the Gods grew angry at the warfare of the mortals, while others say it was because of the Gods that all life didn't perish.
As people recovered from the Cataclysm, many new kingdoms rose and fell. On the continent of Bowendar, the smaller nations eventually formed three major empires -- Braska, Jagrasar, and Krystonia. Down the middle of the continent was the Dragonspine, a long mountain range. Krystonia controlled everything west of the Dragonspine, while Jagrasar ruled the east. To the north, the mountains branched off into several different ranges, which became known as the "Scatterpoint." North of the Scatterpoint was Braskan territory.
During the Second Dragon War in the late 1200s, the Krystonian Empire and the Jagrasari Dominion fought each other with dragon riders. Braska maintained neutrality, but a retired Braskan military officer -- General Agon Volzen -- returned to the battlefield to rescue innocent bystanders from the war. He owned a large estate near the Scatterpoint, in a valley between two branches of the Dragonspine. He turned this estate into a refugee camp, and Volzengard was born -- literally, "Volzen Keep" in the Braskan language.
Over the course of a century and a half, Volzengard grew from a sea of tents and wagons around a castle into a bustling city. General Volzen's castle still stood at the center where his descendants lived, but the tents and wagons that surrounded it were gradually replaced with buildings and roads. Eventually there were city walls as well, separating it into districts.
Up until the early 1400s, Volzengard was technically ruled by the Braskan monarchy, but the city had formed its own operational government. With the outbreak of the Third Dragon War and Braska's involvement in the conflict, Volzengard made a grab for independence and became a completely self-governed city-state, where treaties were signed with the three surrounding kingdoms, thus ending the war.
In the 300 years since the Declaration of Independence, Volzengard has grown to become the biggest city in the world. It is the only place on the planet with no monarchy -- the government is made up of elected officials, and is often nicknamed the "Free City of Volzengard." Over the years many people have come from all over the world seeking a better life and the freedom living in the city brings. Education, employment, and business opportunities are abundant in Volzengard, but there are still slums inhabited by beggars, thieves, and vagrants.
So, for whatever reason, your characters are in Volzengard and are attending the festival. Anyone interested?
