This is completely different than Vietnam. Vietnam never had to happen in the first place. Ho Chi Minh asked the US to help them remove France after de-colonization. France has been our dubious ally since the Revolution so we said no. So Ho Chi Minh turned to communist China. Then shit hit the fan in DC. We went over there to stop communism from spreading.

We're in Afghanistan because we were attacked and we're attempting to root out the terrorists. We have staging grounds all over the place and we have allies in surrounding nations, unlike Vietnam.

The only similarity is that we're fighting indigenous fighters hiding in a network of tunnels and caves.

Lavender, I think spiralling out of control is a little hyperbolic.

The difference between what we are doing now and Viet Nam is pretty simple. We lost in Viet Nam. You can argue with the expansion, you can say we shouldn't be going to these places, but we aren't going to lose. People are already shitting themselves because one friggin helicopter got shot down. We can't fight a war anymore unless we have at least a 1000 to 1 kill ratio, because people have gotten so far removed from it and don't understand what it really is. They want it clean and antisceptic. They want war without (American) blood.

If we ever get body bags in any numbers, we'll pack up and go home, just like in Somalia, because if you lose the war, you lose the election. The people in charge aren't going to let that happen.

I have been reading about the Viet Nam War,Specifically the battle at Khe Sanh.....The average age of the young men was between 18/21 Just boys......These men are now in their mid 50s. As a boy I recall watching the war on the evening news,usually during dinner............I recall the protesters at the local university,It was definately a different time,These men came home to an indifferent nation.......Unfortunately casualties are a part of war.........Our young people In Afghanistan need all of our support.....Something young men in another generation did not recieve..........While I wasnt a war protester I was indifferent .For some reason I fee ashamed..............

Nope. This is not totally different from Vietnam. In Vietnam we were fighting some amorphous domino effect of communism. We weren't fighting an enemy but an ideology. The enemy was incredibly hard to identify.

In this current situation, although we have a clear enemy, we are fighting the concept of "terrorism" instead of "communists." The enemy is as hard if not harder to identify.

Additionally, if you will look up Powell's philosophy of military intervention prior and subsequent to Vietnam, you will clearly see on a theoretical level why comparisons are being made.

We don't have a clear objective, we have no end game, it's spiralling out of control, and there is little end in sight. Sounds eerily familiar.
