the Un-Hijackable, Non Sequitor, Rambling Thread

Tough how? I'm very interested in this film. I've seen the other versions of it. I have the book on hold right now.

It kind of comes across as an action movie in the trailers, but it is very definitely not. Yes, there are action scenes, but the focus, IMO, is fully on Will Smith's character Robert Neville. It does a great job of showing the dissolution of his psyche and rational ability to cope in the face of horrific trauma, loss, and crushing loneliness.

The movie is a tragedy more than anything else, and the flashback scenes just grind the tragic horror of what happened in your face. As a father, I really found myself in the scenes with Neville and his family in flashbacks. They're handled rather well, and build tension.

For much of the film, you can predict a lot of what is going on, and, in my opinion, that made it harder to watch when it occurred. In short, it is NOT a feel-good movie. It is a tragedy, period. Yes, there's light there, but it is still pretty desolate in theme.

I liked the movie, but in an uncomfortable fashion.

Note: I'm not calling it a great film. There were some issues with it, but there will be issues with any movie. Overall, I liked it, and one of the largest reason was becaus eof the bleak, desolate feel. You don't see that terribly often. And, frankly, the opening scenes showing NYC as it would look three years after the fall are awesome.

Thanks so much for your thoughts on the movie!

I didn't realize it would be so bleak. Of course I still have to see it.

You're welcome. Your milage may vary, of course, but that is how I found it.

I've not read the book, so I can't say as how it compares. I have had the premise described at some length, and the moive glosses over a lot of the action in the book, as well as a lot of explanation. It basically hints at some of the revelations in the book.

I gather that Neville in the book is a bit of an action hero badass, hunting the monsters quite a bit. Neville in the movie is a fairly believable chap. That's another thing I liked about the film. Far too often, the lead character is a juggernaut of bad-assedness. Will Smith plays Neville as impressive, yes, but still very human. He shows fear, and worry, and human weakness, and it adds to the overall tone of the movie quite a bit.

Interestingly, my buddy AP saw the film with me. He's an action movie sort of guy, and can frequently get down on a film when he expects a certain amount of action and it fails to deliver. This film quashed that response, and AP was driven into the same sort of introspective wondering I was experiencing. What would I be like in Neville's shoes?

I like being WW. She's all "RAAAR" and fierce and stuff. I was looking for a good pic of Red Sonja to use too, but I haven't found one yet.

Hehe, I had to look it up, but I see I was right. She have been played by a Dane in the movie from 1985

A question that is still just as mystifying to me as it was when it first came up, years ago:

Why would Hugh Grant want to pay for a blowjob on the street!!???

This is probably the drugs speaking, but I have a sudden burning desire to on the Springer show. I'm torn between presenting Real True BDSM a la Gor, but I need someone to be my True Master, or doing the "why can't I boff my cousin when he lives just three trailers down". Either way, I'd need some volunteers to help pull it off. We could split the appearance fees. Bonus points if my "Master" or "cousin" gets into a fight with the bouncers.

I just heard a rumor on the grapevine that our Mr Fungui has developed a new take on breath play. Verrrrrrrrrrry innovative. More News at 9.
