The trouble with Texans...

I am writing a story. The main character is from Texas. I have asked several Texans to read it, mostly to check for realistic Texan dialogue. Most of the outraged feedback has been about:

a. the boots
b. the belt
c. the hat

LOL. Go figure.

Authentic

Where's your Texan from? City or countryside? What part of Texas? Desert West? Metropolitan Dallas/Ft. Worth? The Coastal Bend and the islands along the Gulf? Big Ranch Country in the south? Liberal Austin/San Antonio with surrounding lakes, hills and underground icy-cold rivers? Or the huge pine forests of the northeast towards Arkansas and Lousiana?

All of this makes a big difference; particularly to Texans. There are also several dialects of "Texan." Again, depending on which part and what social strata they come from.

Boots, cowboy hats and a big belt? The only people I know who wear all that in Texas are salesmen and little men with big egos. The real cowboys wear boots, but also wear welder's caps, while sporting long hair and beards. Many businessmen wear boots with suits (yes, even Italian Armani with cowboy boots); especially in Dallas.

And the women...wow! I could go on and on about the peculiarities of Texas women. Keep in mind that it's a place of extremes and you'll have a good starting place for them. For example, there is the Neiman-Marcus/Foley's women who hang-out with their girlfriends at the local Country Club and dish dirt all day. Their husbands are usually at the men's only bar playing high-stakes poker. And then there are the tough-as-nails, pioneer-style women who could live off the land and never break a nail. The list goes on-and-on.

There are many other little "very Texas" things you could throw in to help your story if you want. For example, armadillos (a scavenger and burrowing rodent with armor, mostly seen as road kill by the tourists, but most Texans know at least one personally), you don't order a beer in Texas, you order a longneck and it better be a Lone Star or Shiner beer (most Texans fall on one side or the other).

Texas is nothing in size compared to Auzzyland, but if you want to be authentic, ask.

Thank you Judo for that wonderful reply. It isn't set in Texas but your description certainly painted clear images in my mind's eye. I've solved the problem by not making my character from any specific part of Texas and keeping the dialogue to a minimum (not hard in an erotic story). The big issues were:
1. he keeps his hat on indoors - no self respecting hootin' tootin' Texan would do that apparently.
2. he gives the hat to the girl while er....doing her - he'd keep it on apparently.
3. he undoes the zip on his jeans - not his jeans i'm told - his WRANGLERS. Anyway, the story should be up soon - Haiku On A Sunday - and you can cringe at the lack of Texan authenticity ;)

And er....my character drinks Jack Daniels - he just didn't seem like a beer sorta bloke!!!

Your post gave me a great idea for another story though. I'll definitely be referring to it. Thanx and huggsz.

Hats off

No prob. Hats off indoors, yes. Wrangler? Well, some of 'em (if they can afford them). Hat on during sex? Only if he doesn't really like the filly and it's outdoors.

crazy, i read that story, and i just wanted to tell you i really enjoyed it :)

it's an understatement, of course, but i didn't figure anyone would appreciate wading through either an hour of purple prose, or 3.5 million "really's" *G*

i hope to see the next chapter ... <hint hint, nudge nudge, say no more *G*>

Thank you Hotti. So glad you enjoyed. People are always begging me for sequels to my stories but I am no good at them. Sighz. I know the Texan comes back the next week because he has to collect the hat. Smilez. In the parallel universe where my characters go to live out their days, I like to think that he is a lot more gentle the following week and maybe takes her somewhere with satin sheets. Hugsz.
