Two trees are sitting in the forest discussing a sapling. One tree tells the other "That is a son of a beech tree". The other tree replies, "No. that is a son of a birch." This goes on for a while till they spot a woodpecker. Calling the woodpecker over,

"Mr. Woodpecker. You have the most discerning taste. Would you be so kind as to go over to that sapling and tell us if it is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"

The woodpecker flies over to the sapling. He begins to peck at the tree. Suddenly, he pecks faster and faster. Harder and harder, till his beek is buried deep in the tree. Finally, he stops, takes a deep breath, and flies back to the two trees.

"Well, it is niether a son of a beech nor a son of a birch," he informs the trees. "But it is the best piece of ash I've ever put my pecker in."
