The traditional values thread

interesting. So dress and mannerisms have a lot do to with what you expect form employees? I dress really nice, feminine if you like; I also have a somewhat youthful and fun personality. But I am also in charge of things an kick ass. The fist is just the way I dress, what flatters my body. The second is how I earn a paycheck.

But it would probably be easier to work for you, I'd be expected to do less. Of course, my cow-workers would be pissed and make my life miserable ;-)

If you want an asskickerish position you better dress and act accordingly.

If you want to a be a fun slacker with with flattering clothes, you can be the coffee girl. I'll forgive you for being a slacker.

That's what's great about being a writer...pajamas, 24/7. ;)

YC, you have some funny ideas.

One of the toughest female cookies I know is a little bit of a thing who dresses in a very feminine manner. She works in the top echelons of the Federal Reserve and is respected by...well, everyone.

I'm just busting her balls.

I never mentioned anything about respect, I said I give them more freedom, as in they can get away with more. I don't hold them to the strict standards that I hold men too.

...by everyone....except Libertarians...Just sayin'.

ETA:
Since this is the traditional values thread (ahem, MY thread :D), can't it be said that women do have more laxity in terms of outfits then men? I mean, a suit..is a suit, whereas a woman's wardrobe can cover a whole spectrum (from drab to nigh naughty) and still be business appropriate.

Ah, I see.

Interesting, though.

I hold myself to a stricter standard than you probably hold most men to. And I sure don't want any special treatment...from anyone.

In someways I think women have more freedom. A girl can play soccer and do ballet. If a boy did ballet he'd get his ass kicked thrice a day.

Maybe, I'd have to meet you. I have an extra tier of impossible to meet standards reserved for potential suitors of the women I know, if you'd like to try for that one.

I don't think of it as special treatment though, just different from the way I interact with other things. For example, would you consider it special treatment if I treated you different then I would a dog?

If you're a friend however you will get special treatment designed specifically for you.

Boys do ballet all the time. have you never, well, seen a ballet, like on TV or something?

Boys tap dance too. And sing in the choir. There are even boy NURSES!

Traditional values as I understand them:

Deal with people fairly.
Work hard.
Take care of your obligations.
Don't promise what you can't deliver.
Take care of yourself and your family. If you don't, no one else will.
Be kind to strangers. You never know when you'll need a stranger to be kind to you.
Don't touch without permission.
You may be the smartest, wisest, bestest person in the world. But unless someone actually asks for your advice, shut the fuck up. And if they DO ask for your advice, don't expect them to follow it because what they are really asking for is validation of their own already fucked up plan and unless you are as whacko as they are, your advice ISN'T going to jive with their plans.
In other words - Mind your own damn business.
Let other people live and believe how they wish. Unless they are trying to make you live and believe their way. Then you can stomp their ass three ways to Sunday until they figure out they would be better off to leave you alone.
Life ain't fair. Don't expect it from others, but again, treat people fairly.
"All men were created equal" doesn't mean every swinging dick is the same as every other swinging dick. Some are more equal than others. It ain't fair, so what?
Nobody owes you a single, solitary damned thing except the chance to make something of yourself. And they really don't owe you that, it's just the best deal you can hope for. And if you don't make something of yourself, shut the fuck up, no one wants to listen to your lamer whining.
Trust, but verify.
People are people are people. Don't expect an individual to be any different, special, or any better than someone else just because they belong to a particular group or population demographic or follow a particular career field. On the flip side, don't expect them to be any worse, either.

I'm sure there are more but I think that's enough for now... :D

If there is an impossibly high standard, that's the one I'll aim for. ;)

I don't think of it as special treatment though, just different from the way I interact with other things. For example, would you consider it special treatment if I treated you different then I would a dog?

Um, I don't consider being treated differently from a dog as "special treatment" - I think all humans expect that (except the ones who don't for kink reasons).

If I work for a company and my boss gives me and a male co-worker the same task with the same deadline then I expect that I will have to complete the task within the deadline, in exactly the same way my male co-worker will. I don't expect any leeway on that just because I have a vagina and I would be PISSED if I was given any gender-based leeway.

How can I have any pride in myself otherwise?

If you're a friend however you will get special treatment designed specifically for you.

Well, ditto - but not at work, if you work for me. ;)

35 percent of adult women worked in the 50's.

Americans substitute 50's TV for actual history.

it's like in shouting up traditional values and yearning for modernity, they are actually buying into a post-modern simulacrum. which is kinda neat and ironic.

That's because pictures or it didn't happen.

And those were all low-class women anyway. or Bohemians and rebels.

I met a bloke from a european dept of work and pensions who stated categorically that the dutch only worked part time because they were all so well paid, they could choose life in the work/life balance.

I asked about all the people in the service industries and how did they manage on only a part time wage and apparently they don't count
