Once upon a time there was a thread (*True Confessions*) and with it upon occasion, a bar. The thread is barely alive, and the bar not at all. Often I would be the bartender, though there were certainly others (Soron and KK, I recall particularly and with great fondness). The last time I was in there, there was dust all around, trash in the corners.
Upon request, and on my own desire, I’ve decided to reopen the old place, or at least give it a shot. I can’t say that I will often be bartending, but when I am, I will endeavor to give good service. That is, to serve drinks, provide a convivial environment, listen to the patrons with a friendly and sympathetic ear, and generally be attentive when wished, and a ghost (friendly) when you want to sit by yourself. When I’m not there … well we never did lock the door and you are welcome to help yourself to what’s behind the bar. However, if you think I’m giving anyone else the keys to the wine cellar or other goodie areas, think again! I worked too hard to stock this place and I won’t have those items ransacked!
Now, a description (this being a virtual place!):
The door is old, wooden and well worn. It opens onto a comfortably dark yet well lighted room. To the left is the bar itself, old English walnut, highly polished, with space for six or so (eight if you crowd). Where we got it I’ve no idea because it’s far older than the building (which is no spring chicken!). There are a surprising number of taps, including three hand-pulls for Guiness, Bass, and whatever other appropriate brew I’ve hooked up (often Scottish ale). Fronting the bar are several tables, none really large. We’ve never really gotten an exact count of them (I mean … who wants to count tables?). Along the right hand and on to the back are several private booths with high wooden partitions between them. You can even pull the curtain for further privacy.
There is a pool table and a billiards table (a real one, no pockets, two white, balls one red), both full size. They are in the back on the left. There are NO coin slots for them, we don’t hold with that nonsense here. There are good sturdy pool cues, all straight. If you want better, bring your own. If you rip the felt I may well re-felt it with your hide!
Sorry you can’t watch the big game here. Not only is there no cable, there’s no TV. There is a sound system and it may be the only really modern equipment in the place. Again, no money needed, see pool tables above.
That’s it. It’s comfy, quiet and friendly. It doesn’t take many people to fill it up. The house special is always Flaming Lemon Drops (they were always sortacurious’s favorite and it’s a tradition I won’t change).
Rules: not many
1) If you have an argument, take it outside or I’ll have the bouncer on you (and I don’t want to do that because that’s me and I’m no spring chicken either!)
2) Be considerate. Of people, equipment, etc.
3) See rule 2.
That’s it. The bar is open.
[humming softly as I polish the bar. David Gray on the sound system. A notepad beside me, with a battered mechanical pencil.]
