The Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

Thanks Slyc, that's what I thought too. Take heart in the fact that five of the last six special contest winners were five or more Lit pages. It's just that they seem to get fewer reads but seem to score nicely. I believe readers that don't finish them don't vote and so those that do finish vote higher. They must have liked the stories to stay with it.

From Kitty Mama hersel:

Unfortunately, we're not allowing stories to be submitted individually as chapters, even if they're submitted at the same time. All chapters must be submitted as one file.

As you know, Special Contest submissions get special treatment in that they are not only posted faster than other submissions, but are also posted at the top of the submission list. This is so that contest entrants have a better chance of accruing the necessary 25 votes in the short time period. Unfortunately, some authors were taking advantage of this and breaking stories into parts unnecessarily so they could be at the top of the New list every day. Readers were complaining. Thus, we have made this rule.

Readers have always let us know that they generally enjoy longer-length stories, but prefer them broken into bite-sized chapters. That's cool, and we have no intention of disallowing chaptered works in normal contests or anywhere else on the site. We're even working on a way for chaptered series to have an overall vote score in addition to the individual chapter score. However, for special contests, we do not accept individual chapter submissions. It's a blanket rule, and we feel making exceptions will lead to problems.

I don't know where my confusion came from, but I thought you could submit chapters so long as the story was complete and all chapters were submitted together. Obviously, that's not the case.

So I guess my Halloween contest story is gonna be a really long one . . . .

We'll see. I anticipate my next story is going to run 10 or more Lit pages . . . .

WTF? I lost around 40 votes and went from 3.75 to 4.09. I had EARNED those 1's & 2's!

Final Tally:
Score:4.09 Votes:243 Reads:46400 Comments:14

Guess it knocks me out of competition for the last place.

Congratulations to the winners.

Excellent stories all, but I must confess that manyeyedhydra's A Summer Dance with a Succubus was a favorite of mine this time and I'm especially glad it did will. I don't normally read erotic Horror, but I think I'll be reading a little more.

Mine shot up too, after the final sweep, ending at 4.73 when yesterday, it had been 4.63. I only lost about twenty votes and gained a few others at the last minute. It wasn't enough, of course, but I ain't complaining. A good handful of my other stories have been receiving new attention. Votes on almost all 50-plus stories I have on Lit have increased.

OMG you've discovered the secret.

Up until a coupe of years ago, almost all stories on Lit were complete stand alone stories. Then another site folded and all the writers there end up here. Chaptered stories was the norm at the other site so they posted chapters here. A lot of the authors here followed suite thinking it was the way to go. Maybe it is for normal everyday posting but not so much for contests. Especially now with the chapters having to be posted as one.

Longer stories also give you more room for detail and allow for a slower build up. Both good points IMHO.

I agree Tex, No one says you have to read a story in one sitting. Read it like you would a book. Mine have been getting longer so I can get into the characters more. There are just so many fuck and suck stories out there that I believe the readers want more. Development takes time.

Thanks :)

I'm still shocked I managed to sneak into the top 3 with an erotic horror story in the Summer competition (although this one was a lot lighter on the horror elements than my usual runs for the last place slot :D) Halloween came early I guess :)

Congrats to the other winners and everyone taking part.

Thanks to all

Many thanks to all for their positive comments, and thanks most of all to this site, which has given an amateur hack like me a place to have a fantastic time over the last few years. I don't read or vote in contests I enter in until after they're done, but just scrolling down the seemingly endless string of truly talented writers that submitted stories in the Summer Lovin' event is staggering, and the fact that I'm even allowed to be a part of it all amazes me.

And the winner is... [Pause for trumpet fanfare...]

Congratulations!

The winner of the Authors' Hangout Last Place (tm) Summer Lovin' Contest 2009 is

Darkniciad

Who can now add a suitably modest slogan to the signature to counterbalance all the Hs.

WOOT :D

Bah, all the Hs are because I write in niche categories, and the trolls run out of energy before they get to the hinterlands of Lit :p

you beat me

:heart::heart:Thank you D, for beating me by a nose. I love you for that since I really didn't want to bottom up twice. Somehow I've picked up two votes since the contest ended but my contest tally was 4.74, 19 votes:heart::heart::heart:
