The Saddam dilemma
For those that have been following the Iraq news for a while you've probably read were there are rumors of behind the scenes dealings to 'buy' Saddam Hussein out. The deal in a nutshell is that for some outrageous sum of money, Saddam leaves Iraq and goes into exile.
These news reports have mentioned various sums of monies, even the smallest being very large, and various countries that he might sttle in.
These all seem to be rumors so far. But they are persistant rumors.
But for discussions sake, let's assume that the rumors are true. Why hasn't Saddam taken the money and run?
Further, this brings up a dilema for both Saddam and the folks making the offer.
The offerers dilema:
A great deal of time and effort was spent in tracking Slobabdan Milosevich (sp) down and bringing him before an international tribunal. What does the 'buying out' of Saddam Hussein say abour our sense of justice?
Saddam's dilema:
Saddam Hussein is surrounded by a cadre of trusted followers. Should he entertain bolting the country and leaving any one of them holding the bag for the atrocities that have been commited do you think there would be a mad scramble to hand the UN his head on a platter inorder to win favor and immunity? And do you think Saddam would be able to figure this out as well? After all, look how he came to power and has stayed there. Do you think it's possible that he knows he would never live to see exile if he were to actually want to make a deal?
Is it possible that this persistant rumor was started in the hopes that Saddam would be assasinated?
