I recently posted this on the general board, but thought maybe some over here might be interested in it too.

SEATTLE - Researcher David Baker believes the key to an AIDS vaccine or a cure for cancer may be that old PC sitting under a layer of dust in your closet or the one on your desk doing little else but running a screen saver. Those outdated or idle computers may be just what Baker needs to turn his ideas into scientific breakthroughs.

The project sends work to computers that have installed the necessary free software. When the machine is idle, it figures out how an individual protein _ a building block of life _ might fold or contort, displaying the possibilities in a screen saver. When the PC is done crunching, it sends the results back to Baker's team and grabs more work.

I have set up a team - Lit Group. If any of you would like to join us, click the link and fill in your information.

http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/create_account_form.php?teamid=3036

As of this morning, we ranked 1234th out of 2704 active teams.

I'm not usually competitive but I want our team to rank higher!!

It's such an easy way to help - even though I have no idea how it works but I do know it is working.

Come join us!

edit: We're up to 1214 now - with only three of us. We need more people.

We are now up to 1153. C'mon, it's such a simple thing for a worthy cause.

Very cool! I'll look into it and also pass it along to friends and family, especially the techies with multiple computers or might be able to get workplaces to participate.

Thanks for passing this on, NaughtyLil1 and Cate! :rose:

Thank you, Erika. :rose:

My son has been involved with genetic folding projects through Stanford University for several years now. If I remember correctly, he became involved through a user group of computer 'overclockers.' I remember Stanford sending him a certificate for being in one of their top ranking teams at one time.

There's a wealth of information regarding genetic folding, and current projects at their website. It looks like Rosetta may be part of the same parent organization. http://folding.stanford.edu/

What a great way to become involved in something that has the potential to save lives...

It is a great and easy way to get involved. Will you join our team Arden? :rose:

I'm in, using a computer that is idle for all but a few hours each week and connected to the internet through an always-on cable modem.

Cate, if I find out that you used this to buy Red Sox tickets with my credit card info I'm gonna have to come out there and force-feed you fried clams until they next win the World Series. ;)

Now Yank, you are a smart man. Do you honestly think I wouldn't get you a ticket too? Force feed me clams, no bellys, or that will be on you too.

I think I should start looking for your info so I get you to come visit again. ;)

Did you join us?

Stop in Cincinnati on the way back and we can go watch the Reds. Wait, what am I saying? I need to wash my mouth out with soap...

I'm a SMART New Englander. Do you want to eat Revere Beach? LOL Ewww gross.

I'm glad you joined us Yank, our rank went to 882. We're kicking butt! It's kind of fun and to think that one of us might actually have *the* computer that finds the key is great.

Cinci airport has a great popcorn place. I used to connect through there rather than Atlanta just for the popcorn! (OK and Atl is a nuthouse but the popcorn is a passion for me.)

[threadjack]

I'd rather change planes in Anchorage than Atlanta. Besides, think of the FF miles. :D

I checked the BOINC log late last night and that little sucker had been cranking for hours by then. :)

What about the one you're using now?

We are now ranked at 510 ! A member of our team 'signdog' (I don't know who that is) has added a huge amount of credits. Still, the more people that join in the better for the project.
