Where/how/etc., as part of a group from here or solo?

Edit: Ummm... yeah, I only had to read a little to find out.

I'm solo but would love to join forces.

Settle down KS - goof.

That would be great N, I'll read up on it tomorrow and drop you another note. Thanks again.

i did this one time. the concept is a great one.

if i recall, the "points" you earned depended in part upon the speed and sophistication of your computer; that makes sense, since the faster your computer the more data that can be crunched. i was disheartened, though, to learn that i would earn points at a particularly slow rate.

From what I understand, it works on your computer's idle time and mine doesn't see much of that.

And then, how long?

How long will it take the government to utilize that networking as a legal means to search your computer for..., *AHEM*..., Terrorist's? No! letting someone use your computer, free and clear, is just another way the take advantage of our naiveté to go through our underwear drawers and private paper's. Illegal search and seizure with alternative permission to covertly access your deep secrets! Paranoid? Nope..., experienced.

A couple of years ago Dillinger start a thread about that, tho it wasnt the same organisation and you could choose from 4 projects :

http://www.grid.org/home.htm

Grid.org is a single destination site for large-scale, non-profit research projects of global significance. With the participation of over 3 million devices worldwide, grid.org projects like Cancer Research, Anthrax Research, Smallpox Research and the new Human Proteome Folding Project (running in conjunction with IBM's new World Community Grid) have achieved record levels of processing speed and success.

I would think installing that software is akin to wiping your butt with your AntiVirus and Firewall protection.

Being helpful and involved is fine but in this day and age giving someone you dont know access to your pc is just wacko.

If I were a hacker. Id go straight to this places server and download everyones access codes.

eeeks.

Risky bidness. This.

It's like the SETI project... they break down a BIG project into itty bitty parts and farm those parts out to thousands (or more) computers over the internet.
I've had SETI running for nearly two years now.

They did a similar thing for SETI. Not sure if it actually works, or if it's just a cool screen-saver.

Or if some dork in Delaware is reading every word you type.

I think you've already made your point. It's not necessary for you to continue to do so.

Not that I'm aware of, but I'll set one up if there's an interest.

I'm downloaded and running also, so whenever you get around to it....

Distributed processing. Not only is SETI doig it, but I believe the Human Genome Project did this as well.

It's a smart idea. There's no way that you're going to build a machine right now that has the processing power of hundreds of thousands of computers linked together in a loose network.

I think I did it correctly. It didn't list me but maybe that's just a function of an update. My account shows I'm on Lit Team.

Thank you for bringing the project up and for setting up the team. :rose:

You're welcome. It will be interesting to see where we can go with this.
