The proof the British are as bonkers as the Yanks!

Diana remains in the second place in the Greatest Briton poll. That's ahead of Darwin, Newton, Churchil, etc.

What did the silly woman do rather than die a horrible death?

For the love of Newton, Galelio, Turner, Keats, Blake, Wordsworth, Shakespeare, Jenner, Cromwell! ;_;

Well I am not at all surprised.

I remember once, about a year and a half ago, I read something - think is was in Metro or some other freebie paper, not exactly a source of hard news but anyway, the point is, in this column, the writer had (rather smarmily) written "Of course we in Britain do not bow down at the altar of celebrity as readily as the Amercians" and I thought "WHO THE FUCK do you THINK you are KIDDDING?" People are so fucking celebrity obsessed here is blows my mind. Is it possible to go one friggin day without hearing the name Robbie? Do I really, really actually need to know every time a Beckham breaks wind?

i always kinda figured some of them were bonkers..my drummer's from london and thinks i talk with an accent.

Speaking of musicians, Americans embraced Ozzzzy, didn't they. He's as bonker as one goes.

the one on lennon was quite good but i wouldn't think him as the greatest briton ever

but he was the greatest person in the world in the 60's and i guess 60's is one of the most interesting decades :)

The only Newton that most of the people voting on that poll have ever heard of was Newton and Ridley.

And nobody voted for Wordsworth because they thought 'They've spelled the name of the beer wrong'!

The general public in the UK have become totally obsessed by TV and celebrity.

You have to wonder if a poll was taken today, how many of the population would be able to say they had read a book in the last year.

I read in the Guardian today that, in a poll, "most" Americans had heard of London, "many" had heard of England and Britain but the overwhelming majority thought the United Kingdom was "somewhere" in the Middle East!

We already had the proof, CV. pee pee man shows up here regularly to expound on his lust for Dubya.

And it's the major source for Al Qaeda financial support. LOL

She married Charles. Now that's heroism beyond the call of duty...

Amen.

Can you imagine those ears flapping against her long, luscious thighs... the poor gel must have been frightfully bruised... physically and emotionally :D

Maybe he thought he was just talking to a new species of orchid.

Welllll..., actually, if you're NOT a royalist (as I suspect most of you are not) she probably smashed to smithereenes any last mythical preconceptions about the British Royal Family.

In all fairness to the woman, she did raise a lot of both money and attention to the issue of land mines, and the two boys seem to have a chance at growing up to become reasonably well adjusted and productive human beings, which surely in that family would have to be down to her influence. I'm not saying she was the most important person this country has ever produced, but she wasn't entirely useless, either.

She was also the first public figure, let alone a Royal, to embrace AIDS victims in hospital during one of her engagements...

Our taxes help support their extravagant lifestyle...I think a lot of us lost any mythical preconceptions we had a long long time ago!

As for Diana being one of the greatest Britons...it almost makes you want to say you're French!

It has always intrigued me that Americans appear to be much more enamoured of the Mountbatten-Windsors than we, in the Commonwealth, who have the Queen as Head of State.

Prince George the Second just doesn't seem very Regal, does he? ;)

Well, we could be Southern English, from the "Yuppie Belt" - they border on French rudeness.
