I notice no one in this thread has yet tried to make a case in contradiction of the OP. Everyone agrees, then?

Take that one step further and go look up the 10 goals of Communism in the Communist Manifesto. Make a check list and see how far the Democrats AND Republicans (who are not and never have been truly conservative) have taken us down that road. How many check marks are there left to make?
1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly. [This one seems to contemplate something that is more of a "national bank" than the Fed is.]
6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal liability of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.
Actually, the only boxes that HAVE (arguably, to some degree) been checked are:
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, &c, &c.
BTW, a good source on all this is Why the Right Went Wrong: Conservatism -- From Goldwater to the Tea Party, by E.J. Dionne. It includes a very deep and nuanced analysis of the failure of W's "compassionate conservatism."
Trumpers are a whole different breed from conservatives. What exactly are they conserving? Bigotry? Look at the Trumpists on this board, stellar folks, aren't they?
There are plenty of conservative leaning Democrats, like my parents for example, the Democratic party consists of various types of ideologies.
The clown car has taken a hold of the modern day GOP party. It has become the party of bigots, the greedy, and hypocritical fundies. They are holding the party hostage.
Time are changing, more and more folks are no longer falling for the okie-dokie, which is the main reason the GOP continues to implement dirty tactics to win elections. Demographics are not on their side, and they know this inconvenient fact.
The only clown car is the one you're riding in.

E.J. Dionne is not that.
Yes he is. If you want to know what happened to the Republican Party read Bernard Goldberg's Crazies To The Left Of Me, Wimps To The Right. It's really as simple as that. One side has lost it's mind the other has lost their balls.
Actually, it's crazies to his right and wimps to his left. The GOP has lost its mind, not its balls. The Democratic Party has at any rate not lost its mind, nor have those far to its left. Here's a good place to start on that subject: How the Right Lost Its Mind, by (conservative) Charles Sykes.
Both parties have lost their minds and their balls, clearly as evidenced by their behavior.
The Dems' behavior in the past two years shows no want of mind, at any rate.
It's the eight years before the last two that show they are worthless fucks.
The Democrats spent most of that time trying to enact Obama's agenda and being obstructed by the Republicans -- the former no worthless fuckery at all, the latter not their fault.

The (R)'s could have repealed every word of it like they all promised for years.
They never had the votes to do that over Obama's veto. And now that he's gone, the matter doesn't seem so urgent to them any more.
Will the (D)'s do the same thing again given power back though?
Not if the D POTUS is Bernie or anyone like him.
Beloved Obama could get the (D)'s of congress to produce anything better than (R)omney (R)egurgitated....couldn't even get them to go for basic public services.
What makes you think Bernie would get them to do better?
