The problem with the GOP is that it is no longer the party of conservatives.

I notice no one in this thread has yet tried to make a case in contradiction of the OP. Everyone agrees, then?

Take that one step further and go look up the 10 goals of Communism in the Communist Manifesto. Make a check list and see how far the Democrats AND Republicans (who are not and never have been truly conservative) have taken us down that road. How many check marks are there left to make?

1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly. [This one seems to contemplate something that is more of a "national bank" than the Fed is.]
6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal liability of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.

Actually, the only boxes that HAVE (arguably, to some degree) been checked are:

2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children’s factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, &c, &c.

Well on the way to checking off #6

Moving along. The US conservative movement is based on the philosophy of Russel Kirk and began in the late 1940's. The republican party was NOT conservative then, or now really, but it was the only natural home for those of the conservative movement. Since the election of Reagan republicans of all stripes have claimed that they're "conservative." They adopted the label for political purposes only. Once elected the majority reverted to republican party norms which were right of the democrats but far from being true conservatives.

So your observation that the republicans are "no longer" the party of conservatives is true only in the context that it NEVER was the party of conservatives.

Trumpers are a whole different breed from conservatives. What exactly are they conserving? Bigotry? Look at the Trumpists on this board, stellar folks, aren't they?

There are plenty of conservative leaning Democrats, like my parents for example, the Democratic party consists of various types of ideologies.

The clown car has taken a hold of the modern day GOP party. It has become the party of bigots, the greedy, and hypocritical fundies. They are holding the party hostage.

Time are changing, more and more folks are no longer falling for the okie-dokie, which is the main reason the GOP continues to implement dirty tactics to win elections. Demographics are not on their side, and they know this inconvenient fact.

E.J. Dionne is not that.

Yes he is. If you want to know what happened to the Republican Party read Bernard Goldberg's Crazies To The Left Of Me, Wimps To The Right. It's really as simple as that. One side has lost it's mind the other has lost their balls.

Actually, it's crazies to his right and wimps to his left. The GOP has lost its mind, not its balls. The Democratic Party has at any rate not lost its mind, nor have those far to its left. Here's a good place to start on that subject: How the Right Lost Its Mind, by (conservative) Charles Sykes.

Both parties have lost their minds and their balls, clearly as evidenced by their behavior.

A Trump hating neo-conservative at best:

"After graduating from Nicolet High School, Sykes enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and completed his bachelor's degree in English in 1975.[1] While at Milwaukee, Sykes was a member of the Young Democrats, and following a nonreligious upbringing, Sykes converted to Roman Catholicism at age 18. In 1974, using the slogan "A Different Kind of Democrat" due to his opposition to abortion, Sykes challenged Republican incumbent Jim Sensenbrenner for Wisconsin State Assembly and lost. As Milwaukee Magazine profiled: "...his pro-life campaign signaled a growing crack in his liberalism. And as elements within the antiwar movement became violent, he became increasingly disillusioned."

I suspect he's still a different kind of Democrat at heart.

It's the eight years before the last two that show they are worthless fucks.

The Democrats spent most of that time trying to enact Obama's agenda and being obstructed by the Republicans -- the former no worthless fuckery at all, the latter not their fault.

They had total power and managed to enact a bastardized Republican HC scam without ANY support from the (R)'s.

That means they could have done HC reforms better than a half assed (R)omney scam, you know, the way everyone expected them to do after running their mouths all about it, and they CHOSE not to. They could have cemented their power in this country for the next 20 years by just for fuckin' once trying to do the right thing and they CHOSE not to.

Because they are weak and crazy.

The (R)'s could have repealed every word of it like they all promised for years.

Repeal and replace....

They could have replaced it with a socially liberal public HC option that would cover ALL citizens basic HC needs and been fucking heroes. Even the (D)'s would have to give them credit for actually delivering.

But no...they just fumble fucked it a bit and then walked away.

Both parties are full of crazies who are for some insane reason excited to cut their own noses off instead of just destroying the other party by doing something decent for once. The really insane part is that their partisan bases happy to do it with them.

Where you went wrong, is in entertaining an analysis of the failures of the right written by a hard core leftist.

And W's compassionate conservatism certainly did fail -- politically -- because too many Pubs were hostile to it. E.g., Bush embraced a "multiculturalism of the godly," but when he floated an immigration-reform bill, the Pub base showed their true racist colors and revolted.

They never had the votes to do that over Obama's veto. And now that he's gone, the matter doesn't seem so urgent to them any more.

That's what I just said.

Will the (D)'s do the same thing again given power back though?

I bet they do and you'll go another 40+ years before a HC reform bill is seen again...and even then, they won't give it to you.

What would the (D)'s sell their vote on if they ever actually backed up any of their bullshit??

Not if the D POTUS is Bernie or anyone like him.

Beloved Obama could get the (D)'s of congress to produce anything better than (R)omney (R)egurgitated....couldn't even get them to go for basic public services.

What makes you think Bernie would get them to do better?
