I think his problem was with all of the Late Baroque period and its showy, ornamental, pastel influences.

So just his preference, really. I'm all about Baroque.

Pretty much so.
I loved how the Baroque period gave way to the Neoclassical period in every aspect of art and culture. I appreciate both without all the angst from the critics.

Diego Velázquez was criticized by his fellow artists for painting scenes of the lives and daily chores of common people. They also criticized him by saying he was just a portrait painter, that he couldn't paint historic scenes well. Just goes to show that you will always have haters, no matter how talented you are! His most famous painting is "Las Meninas".

That's how I remembered it too, but I looked it up, and it's apparently a relative named Velazquez. I prefer thinking it's Diego himself. ;
