Jamie slid into the car, deeply relieved to be alone with Nick, even if they still couldn't fall into each other's arms. They could at least talk knowing that no one would be listening. And as Nick started to drive in what seemed like a random direction, Jamie slid his hand across and gripped the man's thigh, craving the physical connection.
"I'm sorry," he spoke up after a few minutes of silence.
"I shouldn't have torn you apart the way I did. I had this idea in my head, that people who love each other are supposed to call each other on their bullshit. It was... overly idealistic, I guess. Why should I expect you to do the impossible just because you're her dad? I know exactly what happens when someone tries to call a girl like Kelly on anything. She doesn't care what anyone thinks if she doesn't respect them. And I'm not sure she respects anyone. I wish she at least respected you - you deserve it."
He gave Nick's thigh a firm squeeze.
"You have a lot of experience I don't, and I can't pretend to be able to see things from your perspective. But still... if I really think about it, I do understand that you need to be supportive of your own kid. I can't imagine the position this puts you in. I'm just really grateful you're still here with me. Doing what you can."
He gazed lovingly at Nick's handsome profile, smiling wistfully. He had no idea how much of a relationship he was going to be able to have with Nick going forward, but he knew it was better to cherish what he had than to dread the worst possibilities.
