In the last few weeks our terrestial TV channels have been showing documentaries about the Second World War. The ones that we've all seen before on the History Channel.

Tonight just before a programme about antiques a channel ran a world War 2 quiz as a filler.

Are they finally preparing us for the inevitability of it all?

MM, your av describes pp perfectly.

As they say in Si-KA-go. what a jagoff.

Too bad you can't subscribe to the Army Times, pp. You'd have a field day with all the information you'd suddenly be privy to.

Your little anti-American heart would go pitty pat.

He said Peace is at hand.

After we won the war, that is. No thanks to the French, by the way.

War is coming.

We shall attack Saddam and liberate the Iraqi people in the month of January...Certainly no later than February...

Bush junior does not intend to make the same mistake his father made...There shall definitely be, " a regime change "....

Yes I agree. Saddam doesn't stand much real chance against everything being mobolised against him.

But we'll have our dead as well. It won't be a 'clean' war on either side.

Judging by the non-stop squawking over the last six months from your corner I’d say you were aware of the inevitability of things all along…

You should be celebrating and dancing in the streets over the great Gibbon-ish decline and Fall of the American Empire leaving the NHRE in a pre-eminant role in world affairs!

I think the Sino-Russo Axis will give ya'll a year or two to celebrate.

I hope the Iraqi invasion is a complete fuck up by the US just so they keep in form with all their other invasions.

Oh how I am wishing with fingers crossed they take on North Korea and create a complete fucking bloodbath.

I want Bush to end up being remembered as a fucking warmongering cunt like his father, and responsible for the slaughter of the many American lives, just because he was a greedy fucker who wanted his name in lights.

You are kidding right? You couldn't really be this stupid. You go be a human shield with pp before you breed and spread your stupidity to innocent children.

Of course we will have "our dead as well." There is no such thing as a "clean" war. That is one of the worst things about war. Unfortunately, the largely liberal media in America doesn't understand this and makes a huge issue out of a single soldier's death.

As a country, we should always be prepared to lose soldiers in any battle, as we will against Iraq. International sanctions against Iraq did not work, but let's not talk about that. The threat of force is the only reason that Weapons inspectors are back in Iraq right now. We made a mistake during Desert Storm in not taking out Saddam Hussein. He lost that war and did not live up to the cease-fire agreements made.

If it is proven that he has WMD, then we need to do whatever it takes to ensure that he cannot use them and destroys them, as opposed to giving them to terrorist groups.

Canadian Broadcasting Company...

Had "Full Metal Jacket" on about 3 times, a couple of days ago. Our channels have been running "Patton" "Patriot Games" "Platoon" and "Pearl Harbor." :D

I would be happy to answer that question as soon as you answer the one I have seen you ducking ever since I came to Lit.

If all the US was interested in was oil, why didn't the U.S. just march on Baghdad and take it during the Gulf war?

Hi Zip . . . for no good reason that I know . . . the failure to take Bagdhad in 1991 was one of the great military failures of American warfare, in my opinion . . . ranking with the US GHQ stopping Patton reaching Berlin before the Russians . . . but Patton did not know about the Atlantic Treaty whereby FDR and Churchill had given Berlin to Stalin as part of the dealings.

While I agree it was a strategic military failure (as opposed to a tactical one), I think it proves that oil was not, nor is the primary reason for the Gulf War nor for the potential war with Iraq.

Does oil play a part in the war, yes it does. The stability of the middle east is of great importance to the U.S. economy, as well as to the economies of European countries and many others. It is in all of our best interests to see a steady flow of oil out of Iraq and the rest of the region.

However, that does not mean that the U.S. wants to control that oil or that we want it for ourselves, which is what you frequently post. In fact, the potential war with Iraq will probably cause some degree of instability with the oil market, and therefore, with the world economy which is in no one's best interests, if oil and economic stability were the primary drivers of this war.

Iraq is a country that lost a war, and then did not honor the agreements that they made after they surrendered. There is a cost to losing a war, especially a war of agression as they started. The reason that this is of particular concern is that Iraq has used WMD in the recent past against their own people and have threatened others in the Middle East with their use. Removing this threat to the region is a worthy cause. In addition, considering that there are indeed terrorist camps inside of Iraq, and have been for years, the possibility of their selling one to terrorists is a feasible event.

For the record, I would indeed be willing to go and fight to put a stop to this.
