"Gregorio Fuentes, 104, Hemingway’s ‘Old Man’: Funentes, the former captain of novelist Ernest Hemingway’s boat in Cuba and his inspiration for The Old Man and The Sea, died Sunday in the fishing village of Cojimar, Cuba. Fuentes, born July 11, 1897, captained Hemingway’s boat Pilar in the years the legendary author lived on the island. In recent times, he had become something of a tourist magnet in Cojimar, just east of Havana, where he lived and which he formerly used as a debarkation point with Hemingway. Hemingway’s 1952 novel modeled its central character, and his colossal struggle to bring in the fish of his life, on Fuentes."

That's sad news. Another legend dies. He'll live on in Hemingway's story. We should all be as lucky to have such a legacy.

Thank you Rybka.

It was somehow comforting to me to know that he was still alive.

Maybe I thought that I would one day fish with the 'Old Man', though I've never been deep sea fishing in my life, indeed, I have yet to sail the blue waters.

sad but wonderful

I stumbled across Spencer Tracey playing him on film last week. I admit to never having read the book but I did enjoy the film.

I hope that what I saw was something like him.

I'll drink a drink for him tonight.
