The Official Author's Hangout Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

As a Yankee who now suffers through long, hot southern summers, I vote for shorter--it's the worst season down here, by far!

I'm with you. Texas summers are not as fun as New English ones, and no nearby oceans for night time skinny dips, either...

"Despite everything that I said -- because mostly I was being cynical -- I entirely agree with this sentiment. It's your story. Write it. Screw what the anonymous complainers say."
Thank you again, Bashfully! You're right--it is my story!

From a redhead who gets really awful sunburns, this isn't erotic at all, it's scary, painful and just plain WRONG! lol --- Count me out.

Also a red head, but I never burn unless I'm near water.

Was really just asking if it had been done.

My story is finished and has noting to do with whips.

A butt load of pain and a very dominant person yes

but no whips on sunburned flesh.

Shivers.

Yes I agree just plain wrong. Still...interesting idea.

Don't try it in RL.

I'd love to see another of LunaEroticaMystica, NT's, Jersey Shore Summer Lovin' stories, but she has health issues to deal with first.

DG Hear, MFG, is up to Ch 4 of a potential entry, perhaps to be entered as a stand-alone. Waiting to see what he does next.

* sigh *

Someone is bombing my first story suddenly. 6 votes over last 3 days and my rating dropped .05, .02 on the last vote alone. Hmmmmm. No comments or feedback.

So they do sweeps only during contests and only on stories in the contest?

I guess this is good preparation for the next story that will really piss off the Puritan trolls.

I don't know how often they do them when it isn't contest time, but they definitely do them. One story of mine keeps getting knocked down below 4.50 by sweeps every few months, and it was never in a contest.

I'm writing chapter 6 as we speak. It will be the last chapter. I'm over 17,000 words right now. I just got involved in the story and let it get away. I don't want to cut my characters short. I guess we'll see when it gets finished. I want to be part of the summer loving contest and the story fits the theme but it takes a few chapters to get there.

I know a lot of readers don't like the longer stories but they can always read it in chapters. Personally I like my story, LOL. Estragon, I just sent you chapter 5.

Any opinions on longer stories?

Well, I'm sure it says something ... crazy about me that when the sweeps affect my story, I hope I get knocked up. :)

(Guys, don't bother. See the smiley? I know what I said and had to alter the sentence to come out that way.)

I've seen the same thing happen with my stories. I have a few that seem to ride the cusp between being just above or just below 4.50. Sometimes I think I attract unwanted attention by participating in the forums, but I enjoy the thinking that goes on in here.

DG Hear, MFG, I'll respond once I've read the final. Don't want to prejudge. Sherlock Holmes said it is a capital mistake to theorize in advance of the facts.

I don't know if I should start this particular hare through the thicket, but I'm a glutton for punishment (no, not BDSM, more like one-bombing). Should themed contests, indeed even monthly contests, be in two divisions, professional and amateur?

The professionals here are very good. They should have their own category. And the amateurs should have a chance as well.

Now I know many amateurs have placed in contests in the past, and not all professionals historically have finished in the top ten. But as more and more writers on this site turn professional (I'm thinking of SilkStockingsLover and D_Lynn, but there are others, I'm sure), I think that two divisions would better reflect the distribution of talent.

Professionals and amateurs have competed side by side, I know, in sport especially; you can mention the old Bing Crosby Pebble Beach (yeah, I know, it's AT&T now, but I hate them) or the great marathons like Boston and New York City.

Is this an idea whose time has come?

I believe there would be too much trouble distinguishing between amateur and pro. Some are unquestionably professional, such as Selena Kitt and a few more. Most are strictly amateur, but there is a large gray area, which would include me. I have probably made about $4,000 dollars selling stories over the last five years, mostly to GroupMVP but lately through Amazon and Smashwords also. I do not think of myself as a professional author, because I am not even close to supporting myself by writing, but I do supplement my other income. I expect there are many like me. In fact, I suspect there are too few professionals to make for a contest.

Besides this, the authors who support themselves by writing tend to be novelists, while contest entries are almost always short stories of 10,000 or fewer words.

Well I just finished my Summer loving story. I decided it was just to long for the contest. It was over 19,800 words and 6 chapters. Decided to just enter it on Lit by chapters. Just submitted the first chapter a few minutes ago, so I guess I won't be in the contest. The best to all who enter.
With respect

Isn't the definition of professional someone who makes money for their writing?
I notice on the home page of Literotica that it states this is a place where amature writers post stories, yet many here are pros.
I agree that it would be nice if we could somehow seperate amatures like myself from the professional writers, but that probably isn't possible and won't happen.
We all know who the pros are and also know they win the majority of the contests.
I'm just a lowly amature and never expect to win anything here, but I have enjoyed the few nice comments and emails I've received. Then again, I have reeived my fair share of insults and personal attacts, I suppose my amature status really shows. I do have gramatical errors and some words spelled incorrectly, but I think my creativity overshadows that.
Oh well, I've decided to enter a few stories in the upcoming contest. I was pleased with my results from the prior contest, finishing mostly in the middle of the pack but did finish with a story with the second most reads. That was a big win for me, giving me reason to continue and keep trying to improve.

When people come here and start writing stories, they are usually amateurs. There might be some people who write in another genre and come here because they like to write erotica for fun sometimes, and believe this to be the place to do it because their efforts will be read and critiqued.

Many people come here and start writing for fun, as I did, and become good enough they are able to sell some of their work, as I did. I will never consider myself to be a professional, because I will never sell enough to support myself by writing (nor will I ever have to) but I do expect to make enough to supplement my income, and even to leave a small legacy of royalties.

I suppose I could describe myself as a professional because I used to write answers to Parliamentary Questions, text books and instruction manuals for my then employer. I didn't get paid extra, nor did I get royalties for my work which is long obsolete anyway.

I have won some non-Literotica writing contests but those winnings scarcely paid the cost of entering the contests. The Australian one paid me 100 dollars Australian. The taxman and my bank made more than me in taxes and conversion charges.

Perhaps I should write some stories for e-publication, but why should I? I would have to declare any income to the taxman and the paperwork would be a nuisance.

Edited for PS. When I joined a creative writing class, the tutor was annoyed because my list of publications was much longer than hers. I couldn't see what she was annoyed about. My publications were non-fiction and very technical. I wanted to write fiction. That is why I had joined the class.

Has anyone else had problems with Lit the past few days? Most of the time there seems to be no connection.

Isn't this thread supposed to stay near the top of the list?

*bump*

My second story is coming along slowly in between loads of laundry, vacuuming and trying to decide if I want to move the massage table to the other side of the bedroom. :cattail:

Yes it is, actually.

As for the massage table, out on the screened in back porch is one of the better spots to my way of thinking. Plot bunny, anyone? ;)

The screened in porch would be great except that when I built it I put a metal roof on it. There is nothing in the world like the sound of rain on a metal roof for sleeping and I wanted to get that sound near my bedroom.

The downside of the metal roof is that it gets to be about 20 degrees hotter than the outside temp on the porch.

I've played out there, it's not visible unless someone is trespassing in my private little forest but only during summer thunderstorms.

I guess that is a whole new plot bunny!

I have a steel roof on my screen porch. Yeah, it do get warm with the sun out but i found a fix for it. They make a 3/4" foam insulation in sheets with foil on one side and a cloth like cover on the other.

Cut, fit, and glue the foam shiny side up between the joists and then use sheets, foil side up to make the ceiling. It's only am R16 but it reflex so much heat back out that it feels cooler than outside.

Yeah, I've used a thunderstorm for love making on an open front porch. It came from real life and it was almost as hot the second time. ;)

I read my story to my wife this afternoon. She says it's not my usual style but she loved the ending. :)
