The Official Author's Hangout Halloween Contest Support Thread

Toothache; ugh. I can sympathize.

Do you know about cloves?

Thanks. Yes I do know about cloves, but clove oil is a bit steep.

I'm really liking my story, but it's a slow builder and I'm just a tad concerned it's building TOO slow. Then I'm reminded the last contest winner was over 20,000 words and mine is probably going to come in around 7000 so it can't be that slow by comparison.

I'll be interested to see what happens if you enter today. Contest entries are sometimes approved in 1/3 the time of regular stories. Mine is done and burning a hole in my hard drive, but I'm going to wait until Sunday to submit it.

Contest stories aren't going to be posted until the first day of the contest no matter how much earlier they were submitted. Ones submitted the day before that date should go up on the same list as those submitted three or four days earlier.

My way of think is that a few days early gives Laurel a little bit of a head start but the way the sticky read, it might be three days for this contest.

For the most part I think posting early would help with the log jam of stories that come through in the days or so around the contest start day.

That was my idea for posting last night anyway. That and i couldn't take having it just sitting there anymore. Grin

That's all fine with me. I posted earlier because Internet coverage is so #@*%X in the Cotswolds.

Sorry, no hugs...just some support.
You have the same problem I do, and I suspect many others do, too. But at some point you have to submit the story. Just hope the readers are willing to forgive a completely misspelled word or a sentence that just doesn't read well.
And then when you see the comments come in and people pick out one of your errors, just laugh.
Despite short time I've been writing, or perhaps because of it, I speak from experience.
I still have to look up 'tiramisu' to get it right!

That's cool, I didn't want to sleep for the next two nights anyways. lol

Just kidding. Thanks!!

Bad plot bunny, down! Down! Back you vicious spawn of Satan! I already have a story entered. NO!

Sigh. What are the rules on two stories in the contests please?

Stop growling at me you vicious rabbit! I'm writing already, I'm writing.

Shakes head. It's going to be one of 'Those' weekends. Forty million ideas coming in from every direction....time to write.

Zero.

Eyes snarling blot bunny. Must write faster.

As many stories as you like as long as they are standalone and on theme. I'd offer you a chair and a whip but plot bunnies eat those with relish. Sorry Miss Mustard.

I just submitted the first of two I have planned. (The other one I've been working on, off and on, for over a week; this one, I wrote in one sitting tonight.) I think the other one will turn out better, but it felt great to knock this one out in one fell swoop!

You might be surprised. Sometimes those fell swoopers fly better because they flow easier.

Too Many Deadlines

I really want to enter this contest. I don't know if it'll happen.

From Oct. 1-14 (if I recall correctly), Harper Voyager is open to unagented submissions for sci-fi and fantasy stuff. They're only going to e-pub stuff (unless something really jumps out at them, presumably). I've got my non-erotic space opera book ready to go... except it's at 129k words, and their limit is 120k. At the very least, it'd be nice to get some sort of professional feedback/reaction to my book before I really decide whether to self-pub or go through the whole agent/submission/rejection thing.

This contest is open on the 1st. I totally have a story premise, I think readers would dig it and it totally fits this contest... but I have no idea how long it'd have to go for me to be satisfied with it. To top that off, I feel like it'd work as a novel that I could self-publish next to the one book I've got out now, but contests are so good for exposure and (dare I say it) community involvement here on Lit... argh.

And then there's the need to push on with a sequel to the novel I have out. I'm about 62k words in. I don't know if this is an appropriate thing to talk about here, but... "Good Intentions" has covered rent and health insurance for me more than a few times. I share that because I like to tell people that self-publishing is no joke. It can turn into real money. I'm not about to quit my day job or anything (where I only scrape by to begin with), but that novel that I wrote here on Lit just for fun turned my "I just like to write" hobby into ohmygodIcanpaybillswiththis!

Ugh. Decisions. Priorities. Ugh.

Ugh. Decisions. Priorities. Ugh.

Priority one: Cut the 9k words out of the novel and get it to Harper.

Priority two: Write the Halloween story as a short story to get some feedback. You can expand on it later.

Priority three: Work on the sequel. Money is always a good thing.

Pretty much what I've been thinking. It's nice to see that from someone else. Helps me remember I'm not crazy. Thanks.

The stories won't be posted until the first day of the contest (1 October). My story is dated to post on that date.

It's funny how none of those stories have a Halloween theme at all.

Scouries just steals everything

The following is post # 1012 on the a.i.r. contest support thread. He also posted exactly the same thing in posts #1001, 1004, 1008 and 1010. He's now up to 218 times posting the same thing (unless I’ve missed a few). Mind you this isn't a record for him.

are these two threadmaster/mistresses racist enablers?

Could our tiger lady threadmistress be jealous? I guess the a.i.r. thread has been making hers look bad...

Yes scouries, you are the biggest racist around. :D

Why would your fake airhead thread make anyone except you look bad?

There's no one posting there but you and me. You posting lies and me posting the truth.

Last day before Oct 1st

A pumpkin I mean a bump to put this thread at the top and a good luck to all the participants. I look forward to reading your stories.

I like the concept of Halloween and I don't care that most Danes sneer at this imported US tradition. The kids have fun with it and I have fun scaring the hell out of the ones knocking on my door.
