The Official Author's Hangout 2016 April Fool's Day Contest Support Thread

I keep that shit and invest it in sweatshops and baby seal hunts.

Thanks, Literotica!

I swear, dude, you're like the classy big brother I never had. :D

I invested part of my winnings in a Star Wars "The Force Awakens" DVD. though I did make sure I bought it while logged into the Amazon Smiles campaign.

Thanks, but that misses the point. I'm not taking the money at least partially on the principle that I don't think money should be given. If I take the money and give it to a charity of my choice I've taken the money. Also, donating it to a charity isn't in any way encouraging writers at Lit. to continue their writing, which is the proposal here--sinking it into writing right here. Congrats on the 4.71 finish.

This is a very nice idea, Pilot. I, for one, really like it. I hope either that the people qualifying do claim it or that Laurel might contact them directly, as she knows all the scores of the contest stories at the time of the awards.

Perhaps folks may be too shy or embarrassed to make the claim, or don't come to the AH forum.

PS in edit: I myself make no claim on the $, I'm right in the middle of the pack.

I cash mine in for quarters and drop it all at the peep shows. I get about 15 minutes of quality "screen" time with the girls.*

*and by girls I do mean pre-op transvestites

I'm just kidding here friends.

Hahah, all you guys know I don't make enough for 15 minutes of window time.

Sadly, I just can't seem to qualify in the numbers but I love that you are offering out encouragement to new writers and new contest-folks.

Congrats again to the winners and the new-winners. Go get um!

You may have just given me an idea for a story.

Bless you, Huck.

Personally I'd rather give it to animals who are suffering(my wife donates to 'people charities) than kick it back to other writers. If all that will push you to write is a few dollars, than that's lousy motivation to begin with.

Plus the fact is although you are making a kind generous gesture it's going to people who obviously are already writing and entering contests, so they are already motivated the old fashioned way. Yes, you're rewarding their efforts, but if they were already entering they probably would again anyway.

But in keeping these thoughts to gestures and a sense of " I don't really need this, maybe someone else does' as far as the satisfaction and feel good of placing, that's also a great gesture, but nothing that will set a trend as its been proven in the last year or so that these contests mean all but life and death to a few people. For some its more fun to win and do the Nelson from the Simpsons "Ha-ha" than show any sense of I have nothing to prove.

It's why I took myself out of Pool league, the way it was set up, I kept playing people that were well below my level and it got to where there was no competition and I don't take fun in beating beginners or people I should beat easily. The thrill is competing as much against myself as others. That's not there in that particular league anymore.

And here its really not about what story or writer is better anyway, its popularity in general, reputation, following, category, trolls, cheer leaders, unpredictable sweeps, did you dare to put one off putting thing in your story that bucks the traditional trope?

I think at this point the accomplishment and what these are worth is the fact you-generic you-entered. That you set a goal to get a story done and entered and you followed through. That and as many always point out the extra eyes on the story and sometimes some feedback from authors here.

But aside from that its a like anything else that is seen as a competition that is anything less that a straight up on one one (which this of course is not) handicapping and sandbagging and taking advantage of certain things when one can.

Take the money away as you say-take the damn W away- at that point you have a site wide fawc type deal, nothing on the line, but trying to write the best story you can and with no stakes, there would be far less bullshit.

In my first couple of years here I very much wanted to place. I'm competitive, that's how I am. Four W's later does it really matter? Sure a win is nice, but now its been there done that, what's next? Not to mention I've been selling almost five years now which is a far bigger and more rewarding challenge

But as long as there are win at all cost types, and there will be in anything its human nature, these will never really get any better.

So, Kethandra was the only one to put in a "low rating" bid on an April Fools Day contest story, for "The Heroes' Bar." So, $25 to her. Ogg could claim $25 as well for one of multiple stories, and it's up to him if he does. I'll report this to Laurel, but if she doesn't contact Kethandra with instructions on claiming the $25, Kethandra can PM Laurel for the instructions.

This should close out that transaction. On to the next contest.

So Kethandra is girl? And Moveable is a guy? This thread is shattering all my illusions about who's who and what's what around here.

Umm. Maybe not. I guess I was just assuming from reading the tenor of posts.

I won't. It is far too easy for me to get low ratings. :D

But in recent days all 3 low-rated ones have been favorited and their ratings have crept upwards. Odd. Normally my ratings drop after a contest.

Regardless of how well any of us tried, Redtube just won April Fool's. For any that have not completed any *ahem* research for writing today, Redtube presents: porn for Millennials utilizing emojis as the descriptions! :D
Because who doesn't want to decide which clip to watch from tags like: 'melon melon zippered-mouth-face diploma shocked-face' or 'peach fist eggplant cat-face'?
...not that either 'melon melon' or 'peach fist eggplant' are my things...just examples mind you. :)

Hey now, what did the baritone ever do to you? ;)

Hmm. I've never told that story, TX. Might have to write a first person confessional.

'Barbershop Quartet: Saving the Baritone for Last'

Oh, I don't know about that, did you check out Porn hub earlier? It was "corn hub" and all the descriptions were about hot corn with the thumbnails to match until you clicked one.
