Gas prices to fall below $2 for Thanksgiving

Nathan Bomey, USA TODAY 11:43 a.m. EST November 23, 2015

Thanksgiving travelers will pay less for gasoline than they have in more than a decade.

The average price of unleaded gasoline is expected to hit $1.99 on Thanksgiving, GasBuddy.com analysts reported.

That's the lowest it's been for Turkey Day since 2004, said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis for Oil Price Information Service.

Right now the average is $2.072, Kloza said, but it's fall. At that level, nearly 60% of U.S. gas stations are already selling gas for less than $2.

“We had lower prices in 2008 and 2009 but not for Thanksgiving,” Kloza said. “The cheapest markets are in the Great Lakes states. Ohio, Michigan, Illinois — very, very cheap gas there.”

Gas prices are down from $2.81 a year ago, according to GasBuddy.

Bad news for energy producers is good news for consumers.

The global energy industry is facing a massive surplus in oil production, which has led many oil companies to shed thousands of jobs and slash investment plans.

But U.S. producers have continued pumping oil even as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) maintains production a high rate. That has depressed prices.

“This is a glut of crude,” Kloza said. “It’s a glut everywhere you look.”

The typical U.S. driver will save roughly $75 on the road in the 40-day peak shopping season leading up to Christmas, compared to recent averages, Kloza said.

“I don’t know what he or she is going to spend it on, but it’s a substantial amount of money,” he said.

It's especially good news for the millions of travelers who will hit the road this week. Some 67% of Thanksgiving travelers plan to drive more than 200 miles, GasBuddy reported.

For months, retail gasoline prices have remained higher than analysts would typically expect considering rock-bottom oil prices. With oil prices hovering in the $40 to $50 per barrel range for several months, gas has remained in the low $2 range for several months.

Analysts say the price of gas depends on many factors, including refinery costs, distribution and blends.

But the drop below $2 indicates that retail prices are finally catching up with crude prices.

Why Obama Is Standing by the Syrian Refugees

The president isn’t speaking to his opponents—he’s talking to history.

PETER BEINART NOV 23, 2015 POLITICS

Once upon a time, liberals criticized Barack Obama for only taking on fights he knew he could win. Not anymore. In 2013, Obama responded to the Sandy Hook shooting with a fervent, if unsuccessful, push for gun control. Now, over the past week, he’s met the nativist hysteria sparked by the attacks in Paris with an impassioned, enraged rhetorical barrage on behalf of the admission of Syrian refugees. He’s done so even though polls show that a clear majority of Americans now oppose admitting any Syrians. And even though, last Thursday, 47 House Democrats broke with him to help overwhelmingly pass a bill that would make admission of Syrian refugees virtually impossible.

Nonetheless, Obama has been unyielding. Last Monday from Turkey he went after Ted Cruz, declaring that, “When I hear political leaders suggesting that there would be a religious test for which person who’s fleeing from a war-torn country is admitted when some of those folks themselves come from families who benefitted from protection when they were fleeing political persecution, that’s shameful. That’s not American.” On Tuesday in the Philippines, Obama targeted Chris Christie for being “worried about three-year-old orphans. That doesn’t sound very tough to me.” On Wednesday he fired off six straight tweets on the subject, the last of which declared that, “Slamming the door in the face of refugees would betray our deepest values. That’s not who we are. And it’s not what we're going to do.” Then, after meeting refugee children on Saturday in Malaysia, he declared that, “American leadership is us caring about people who have been forgotten or who have been discriminated against or who’ve been tortured or who’ve been subject to unspeakable violence or who’ve been separated from families at very young ages. That’s when we’re the shining light on the hill.”

Every other civilized leader in the world wants to fight and destroy the terrorist that Obama, Clinton and Kerry have set lose in the world while Obama's policy is to hide under his bed and hope it goes away while setting free the Nazi killers in Gitmo loose to kill more women and children. Like his lies about Obamacare where he called the people who are mind dead like on this site stupid and will believe any stupid thing out of Washington as if it was a reality show, they don't use theirs minds to see his pro terrorist anti human rights policies have led to the mess in the world. Every death, woman and girl sold into slavery and every family forced from their homes lays at the feet of this coward and fool and communists lap dog. You think after 7 years he would some how figure out what the job of president is, but the only office he and his pet fools are qualified for are to hold office as corrupt aldermen in Chicago, which by the way his buddy has turned into a blood bath for African Americans. He wants to turn the U. S. into the same ruins his corrupt union bosses, incompetent CEO's and socialist/communists politicians have made of Detroit and its economy. Clinton, a whore of Wall Street and a progressive fascists who has made Haiti her very own slave plantation will give us what Hitler and Stalin died trying to do. But we are suppose to try and think of something good Obama had done for the world and the United States. So I will try. Nope I can't think of anything. Sorry.

Obama pledges 'total solidarity' with France after Paris attacks

BY JUANA SUMMERS

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama pledged solidarity with France on Tuesday after the Paris attacks, declaring "Nous sommes tous Français" — we are all French.

Standing alongside French President Francois Hollande after they met at the White House to discuss the U.S.-led campaign against the so-called Islamic State militants, Obama declared that the coalition would be victorious against the "barbaric terrorist group."

"We cannot succumb to fear, nor can we allow fear to divide us" Obama said. "Make no mistake, we will win, and groups like ISIL will lose." "Make no mistake, we will win, and groups like ISIL will lose."

Hollande, speaking through a translator said that the United States and France share "a joint duty to pull our forces together and fight terrorism."

Hollande and Obama spoke after meeting to discuss the global response to ISIS.

Hollande's visit to the United States, part of a push to get the U.S. and other allies to step up their efforts to destroy ISIS which has claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks, was somewhat complicated after a Russian military plane was downed by Turkish F-16s.

Obama told reporters that the downing of the plane indicated an "ongoing problem" with Russian airstrikes in Syria and that Turkey "has a right to defend its territory and air space." Obama also called it "very important" for Turkey and France to "discourage any kind of escalation" over the downing of the plane.

Hollande said Tuesday that he will still travel to Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin.

He said that he would tell Putin that Russia and France can work together if Russia concentrates its military effort on fighting ISIS.

"We do not want to exclude anyone," Hollande said. "But we want to make sure that this political solution must eradicate terrorism."

Both Obama and Hollande also addressed the Syrian refugee crisis.

Obama praised France for keeping its promise to take in 30,000 refugees over the next two years. By contrast, the United States plans to take in roughly 10,000 displaced Syrians over the next year.

Obama again defended his own plan to keep the United States's borders open to the world's refugees. That plan has come under scrutiny as a number of governors, lawmakers and Republican presidential candidates are debating whether to block the entry of Syrian refugees into the United States.

Calls for restrictions on Syrian refugees entering the U.S. have even come from members of the Democratic party, some of whom voted in favor of a U.S. House bill that would significantly tighten screening for refugees.

"Nobody who sets foot in America goes through more screening than refugees," Obama said Tuesday.

Abandoning refugees, Hollande said, would "betray what we are."

Obama: Paris Climate Summit Will Be ‘Powerful Rebuke’ To Terrorists

by CHARLIE SPIERING

24 Nov 2015

President Obama calls the upcoming climate summit with world leaders in Paris a “powerful rebuke” to Islamic State terrorists who attacked the city earlier this month.

“What a powerful rebuke to the terrorists it will be, when the world stands as one and shows that we will not be deterred from building a better future for our children,” Obama marveled, after previewing his attendance at the summit which begins next week in Paris.

Obama made his remarks during a press conference at the White House today with French President François Hollande. He urged Americans to come together and be united against the threat of terrorism worldwide.

“We cannot, and we will not succumb to fear,” he said. “Nor can we allow fear to divide us. For that’s how terrorists win.”
