So despite the Governments trying to convince us that things are better these days and the economy is turning around we out here in the real world know better. yesterday at work my compnay for the last 10 weeks has been running the workshare program. For those unfamiliar with this program basically everyone works 32 hours a week so 4 days and collects for the fifth. It's good in that you can collect indefinetely but of course you do lose some money the state of RI only has 2 people who run this department (so they say) and people have not goten a fucking dime yet, we have called the Senator's offices as well as gone to a local news station and nothing yet. yesterday the company announced it wioll now be going on 3 days a week with the other 2 days being just us supervisors (we have not had time off yet).
Needless to say this did not go over well peaople cannot afford to pay there mortgage and are even struggling eating.
A 55 year old woman that I have worked with for 10 years broke down into tears in my arms in my office because they are already 2 months behind on their mortgage. I recently sold a property my grandfather left me and loaned her a mortgage payment. She is one of many in my place with these issues one of millions across the country. It was a tough day. So I get in my car and put on the local sports station and heave to hear about the NFL work stoppage.
I shut it off before I hit something. I am sick and tired of this bullshit. These assholes are millionaires and billionaires. I cannot possible feel bad for them. They have the stones to act as if they are going without They complain of healthcare. Are you fucking kidding me? I know people who pay $200 a week for healthcare. Why don't you take some of your millions and invest in your future rather than buying 5 million dollar homes? Even the "non superstars make over six figures a year. Don't know what the average income is out here on Lit but safe to say 6 figures is more than most of us make.
I am (was) a die hard football fan. patriots first since 1978 but in general will watch any football game televised from 12-12 on sundays all three games and all the shows but you know something>? No more. If they resolve this tomorrow I will not buy another ticket, t-shirt, or watch another game. I am fucking done. I don't understand how anyone can sympathise with these people and as far as the void left by football? well maybe I'll devote some more time to my writing and defenitely spend some time doing things with my family. Not a fan of football players. Over here they are basically a crime spree on their own. Sports contributes nothing to humanity. Basically all it is is a cult of celebrity. Shoot em all I say. No one will spend $200 to watch you work for a couple of hours.

The man who stands on the rear bumper of a trash truck has a greater chance of being killed or crippled while on the job. He makes less than the soldier or the policeman.

Getting shot is not a job requirement for soldiers or policemen. It is a possibility and a risk. For a pro football player, several thousand blows to the head over his career is part of the job. It cannot be avoided. The consequences of the job cannot be avoided.

I was a soldier, then I was a Deputy Sheriff. While I Deputy, I maintained an EMT certification (all done on my own time at my own expense, ditto for the bandages etc I carried). And earned a Bachelor's Degree, in Criminology. When/where I started, a married Deputy with 2 children qualified for welfare.

In the Army I got blown up a couple of times (mortar attacks), saw a lot of horrid things. As a Deputy, I had windows shot out of my moving patrol car, got hit with rocks etc from behind while on calls, confronted people with guns, knives, ball bats and every weird item you can think of. I have musculoskelatal (sp?) injuries from going down a flight of stairs with a spouse abuse suspect on top of me. Cracked ribs on numerous occasions, broken bones in my arms. Lost count of stitches, minor cuts and abrasions don't even register. Saw a lot more horrid things.

Overall, nothing unusual for any cop or soldier.

Of course, there are the mental problems, which everyone gets in his own manner. Survivor's guilt out the yang. Occasional flashbacks. Stress dreams (the other night I kept waking up thinking I'd heard someone jacking a round into a weapon, hurling myself to the floor. Got a few bruises left from that.)

While I can somewhat sympathize with the unheralded players, who don't get paid all that much considering the average of a 4-year career, I find it hard to sympathize with the guys with multi-million-dollar contracts with signing bonuses. And completely impossible to sympathize with the owners.

I think all of the NFL owners make easily ten times what the President of the United States does. And few of them do much of anything worthwhile with the money.

Ten times what the President makes is 4 million. I would certainly hope that the owner of an NFL team is making at least 4 million.

This would make you one of the public employees who needs to learn that the taxpayers can no longer afford your healthcare and pension plans.

A person's pay does not depend upon the danger or risk. It's a matter of how many people can do the job, and then how many of those are willing to do it.

While I agree that NFL players, (and, for that matter, all sports figures and entertainers), are grossly overpaid, that isn't the current battle.
The issue right now is that not only did the owners opt out of the current agreement, (which had the leagues profits and popularity at an all time high), they at the same time gave up profit on tv deals to set up a war chest to fund them locking out the players. (Which has since been ruled illegal).
They then told the players they needed an extra BILLION dollars in their end of the agreement and completely refused to show any valid financial records to support it. The much talked about final offer the NFL owners made was to "meet the players in the middle."
That was going to be over a 300 million dollar paycut still with no supporting evidence. If I came to you and asked for half your pay, and you told me "NO" me taking a quarter of your pay is NOT a reasonable way to reach an agreement.
I don't know about you guys, but if my boss came to me and told me that even though company stock was through the roof and everyone was making money hand over fist he needed to cut my pay I would be screaming to my union rep as well.

That being said, there is some truth to the owners statements that costs are rising, anyone who's had to buy ANYTHING in the last couple years is aware of that. The issue is that the owners aren't showing any data as to how much their costs have risen and seem to seriously expect the players to just eat the loss.

It's insane.

I used to give two shits about NFL players until I read an article on ex-NFL players who were hurt and had no compensation. One was living in a car with his wife. One told of having broken ribs and being taped up and sent back on the field. I wish I knew where the article was. I read it at my brother's in some mens' magazine. Football is a brutal sport and from what I see the players are getting bigger every year. They take their life in their hands everytime they go on the field.
